Sorry guys :(
But hey i thought, why not! ;) Bascially i might be getting a new computer, father wants to get one before end of financial year (yes tomorrow). About 6 months ago i was lookin at getting a nf7-s with a 2500 barton. I see that both of these products are still around! Would anyone recommend anything else? The nf7-s only has 2 ddr400 ram slots....not that im going to need more than that. It has SATA support, which i probably wont be using anytime soon as i just got a new 120 gig WD. (So i could copy all the s*** from my old one and send it the f*** back!) The main aspect i was interested in when i was looking at it a while back was the onboard sound was apparently pretty damn sweet? s*** at the moment i use onboard AC'97 sound, its pretty farkin s***, but i dont really notice too much. But hey if i can get better sound quality then yeah for sure! :D What do you guys reakon? Any new items that i could find useful? What kinda cases do you guys recommend? Thanks guys! :D edit: yeah should said that hey....i dunno....probably 1k tops. Id probably get a Vid card...maybe a 9600XT or something for 280~, nf7-s: 140, CPU: 150~, Some sort of decent-never gonna f*** with me ram. f***...thats adding up fast :( oh and Definately no HDDs! :) Got a 120 gig gonna be coming back soon on RMA. |

Ok, MAYBE go ASUS for motherboard as people on OCAU have had problems with Abit, but that could be just them. I personally think Abit are sweet.
Here is what you should have a look at 2500+ 135.00 NF7-S 139.00 Kingston 1Gig Kit PC3200 (2x512) 335.00 Volcano 12 55.00 Case 80.00 GFX Sapphire 9600XT 256MG 299.00 700 bucks. Then overclock your cpu to 200fsb (easy to do with 2500) And thats $1045 |

Ill probably do a bit of overclocking....but not to extreme levels! :P
Not too keen on the volcanos, its in my room and i need to get some sleep at night! ;) 1 gig of ram? meh, i dont really mind, 512 does me fine at the moment. I dont even really need to upgrade, dad wants a new computer so im like "oh umm i wanna upgrade...you can have my computer :D" |

NF7-S boards are awesome.
Running both SATA and normal HDD's on it. The only problem I'm having is sometimes I get that popping sound when playing games or mp3's. I dunno if it's it the onboard sound or my speakers but for 99% of things it works great. Also cant work out how to install that firewire adapter. I've plugged it onto the mobo and it doesn't work. Gone thru BIOS and I cant see anything in there that I should turn on. Never use firewire anyway so I can live without it. |

Darius, your config is odd, becuase why not use 2 256meg dimms for dual mem?

because 1gb of memory is nice and is what i have :) to make it cheaper 256 would suffice
oh i also meant to put in 2 X 512 sticks last edited by Darius at 17:08:38 29/Jun/04 |

only has 2 ddr400 ram slots.er ive got 3 in mine. also the board is awesum, the sound prob is just a simple driver issue, cant remember how i fixed mine sorry :( hmm firewire works fine on mine. there is a firewire option you will have to enable in bios. ok nothing special here and it came out to 1467hahaha.... seriously dont bother with 2x256 ram. your _way_ better off going 1x512 and upgrading later for another 512 for dual channel. dual channel doenst make that much difference. but if you can, then go 2x512 straight up, its just a money thing. last edited by Fuknukle at 18:44:34 29/Jun/04 |

nah all 3 are 400mhz
only 2 go dual channel tho :) revision 1.0 and 1.2 you are correct, however revision 2.0 is where it all changed. edit: 3 x 184-pin DDR-SDRAM for dual-channel and up to 3GB's, PC2100, PC2700 & PC3200linky last edited by Fuknukle at 19:13:55 29/Jun/04 |

I've just built a PC for my parents. P4 2.8, ASUS P4P800SE, 512Mb RAM(in dual channel configuration) and a 9200 + case.
Paid just under a grand for it all, but that had a DVD Burner + 80Gb SATA drive in it. DVD Burner was $146 and the drive was $110 If your going to buy Intel, go for one of the P4P800SE or Deluxe boards, i picked up a P4P800SE for 160, and im suprised how quick it runs. (I Had a squiz on THG a couple of nights ago and was suprised that the P4P800 Deluxe nips at the heels of the P4C800 Deluxe. ASUS did the naughty and managed to get thet 865 to do things that intel claimed only the 875 chipset could) |

AthlonXP 2500+ $135
Abit NF7-S $139 1x Kingston 512MB PC3200 $159 ATi 9800SE $259 Antec SX1040-II (with 400W supply)$166 Total: $858 Then you have some dollars spare for a monitor. |

What Orbitor said but if you want to spend a little extra on the vid card get a GeXCube 128M Radeon 9800 PRO for $379
Or get a GeXCube 128M Radeon 9600XT EXTREME AGP Video for $289. Faster than most other 9600XTs. |

Hey guys, thanks for the response!
Intel are probably a bit too exy for my price region, and i think id rather get a better vid card and same speed cpu than a "better quality" cpu. Anyone wanna explain the differences between the 9600XT, 9800 Pro, and 9800SE. Are they all decent cards? Can they run the latest games? Reakon they could run doom3/hl2? |

9800pro > 9600XT > 9800SE.
However some 9800SE's can be 'unlocked' so they run like a 9800pro but there's no guaranties. 9800pro won't have any probs with Doom 3 or HL2, 9600XT and 9800SE will run both games but not as well as the 9800pro. |

Go for the Asus A7n8x-E Delux they are a good motherbourd for the price and go AMD all the way. Another thing have a look at the XFX FX5700-XT with DDR3 in it it's a pretty fast card and gose harder then the XFX FX5900Pro So good luck with your PC
Have fun MOrphous |

From umart
Radeon 9600XT and 9800XT Cards Discontinued 17/06/2004I'd look at getting the vid card elsewhere, umart have never had a very good range in that area anyway. No other retailer I've looked at has mentioned anything similar. |
