All you need is a loan equivalent in size to the foreign debt of Zimbabwe and you should be able to pick one up.

hammer u r an idiot, u just showed y the apple IS GOOD not y not to buy it.

and u only need the 6800 card if u want to run it at that res. however my 9700 can go upto 2048x1536 and thats nearly 2years old now.

the apple display will be so much better then any of the others u have there. and its more designed for being on a desktop, not a wall in ur living room.

In answer to your question Mongie :

"The NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card provides two DVI connectors so that two 30-inch Cinema HD Displays can be used with the Power Mac G5 desktop, resulting in an unprecedented amount of screen workspace."

:)

So not only does your video card require 2 power connectors your monitor requires 2 dvi connectors too. :)

Six grand, Hmmm, I'm finding the amount so far out of my reach, I cant even imagine if I would spend that much if I had the money. I guess I would if I had several tens of thousands sitting in the bank not doing anything.

You are missing the point. You have to purchase the Nvidia card to run the bloody monitor and you can be assured that the card will be @ A$ 800 or more when released. And I hope you will be happy with the NVidia family of cards as your monitor will be limiting your graphics card upgrading in the future. Soooo.. you will be out @ $7000 in total after you purchase both monitor and NVidia card. My problem is not with the specs but the mutually exclusive tecnology involed with such a purchase.

no, you don't have to buy the card, you just need that particular card to reap the benefits of the high end features of the monitor.

Driving Force
The 30-inch Cinema HD Display is so big, it requires the next level of graphics technology. The NVIDIA ,GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card delivers, with the most advanced graphics engine available for Mac. This card, designed specifically to support the dual link DVI connection, delivers 2560 by 1600 resolution. Even better, it can drive two 30-inch displays, giving you the ultimate creative canvas. This card will be available as a built to order option and as a standalone kit in August 2004.

The above paragraph is taken from the Apple site its self.

http://www.apple.com.au/displays/#

It is clearly stated that the NVIDIA ,GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL is required to run the monitor in question, the wording is a little ambigous however.

Don't get me wrong however, the monitor is a seriously sweet piece of technology. I was merely pointing out the cost effectiveness of the product VS the all ready available tecnology at present.

whats a GeForce 6800 DDL ???

Dual-link is what people have talked about earlier. One DVI connector powers the bottom half, the other the top half. Double-Dual-Link (DDL) allows for two monitors.

PC Compatibility
The DVI connectors on PowerBooks and other graphics cards sold by Apple support a “single link” DVI signal, suitable for driving the 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display or 20-inch Apple Cinema Display. And this DVI connection removes all barriers to using an Apple display with a PC. So long as your graphics card supports DVI with DDC technology for widescreen viewing, you should be able to use these Apple displays with a PC.

Okay, after digging a little deeper it does appear that the 20" or 23" cinema Monitor will support current cards that have DDC Technology but it does not mention the 30" Monitor. I found this little tidbit after much searching.

Requirements: Power Mac G5 and NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card (offered as CTO option for new Power Mac G5 customers and as a kit for current Power Mac G5 customers

However mac users should be forced to upgrade in order to use this monitor.

you can use it with a current vid card, you just won't be able to run the high res.

i dare say that several matrox cards will run it. i also dare say if you are going to buy one of these you would have been looking at that nvidia card anyway.

either way it is not a "overpricesd POS" as you described it. so much mac angst amoungst the uninformed.

afaik those LCD TVs dont have a 25ms refresh either.....

Mind you, you did inspire me to go put a 30"lcd on my desk to see what its like to play quake on.......and it seriosly kicks ass, although, im sure the mac would be better.....maybe ill get out a 40" instead :

The sort of mac users that can afford a 30" LCD monitor aren't going to overly care about being "forced" to upgrade their mac to use it.

I know someone who uses the 24" Cinerama display with his mac (as well as a little 19" in a dual display setup) and I'm pretty sure the he won't care about the cost of more screen area.

Say what you like about PC v Mac, but if you are willing to blow money, the mac stuff is way sexy.
