thx Gumby, and Trog

im wanting to get into linux but not sure if this will be good or bad, since it is so different to 'normal' linux.

i reckon it'll be best to start from scratch with core linux and then add on things as i need and want.(so i can accually learn about the os)

while it looks great as a linux flavour, aparently its not a dist. for ppl who dont favour 'xp's "help policy"

your thoughts?

Its one of the better Linux deesktop, and is being distributed as a Windows cross over distribution.

As for learning the OS, WTF just run a xTerm session and hack away. There is no difference between all the Linux's they all use the Linux kernel that is why they are called Linux. So if you wish to learn Linux they will all be running Linux. As for command line, these are shells ksh (K shell), bash etc these help you get around. All the rest are apps and librarys that can be installed on any system, anywhere they feel but usually these comply with some form of package manager that allows for the distribution of updates and software like RPM or APT.

So really the only difference between the distributions is the software they bundle and the way they configure it. So really you can configure any distrobution to be what you want it to be, they just make it easier by bundling it all together for you.

Once peoples realise this they will stop all this one distro is better than another bulls***, it should be this distro is more convienient because they bundle all the software and configure it the way that I like it.

Yes very true, but also the administrative tools in linux make a big diference. Has anyone tryed SuSE 9.1. Thats an OS going places too. Owned by Novell. its good s***. I think in the next fue years all the linux distros will give microsoft a fun for there money in the corp market.

dude ive only used unix with no gui.
i only lernt very basic commands so by no means do i have any knowledge what so ever about linux.

i just dont want to get _used_ to a windows based enviroment when thats not the 'linux norm'
is this the case?
from the review it sounds like it does most things for you, where as normal linux requires more interaction.

but as i said i dont know, therefore i dont want to learn and get used to a system which helps me too much so i dont get a real understanding of the operating system. :)

yeah your right, X-server was designed for viewing the internet, not as a windows like enviroment.

No. The retail version is similar to SUSE 9.1 retail in that it has software that requires liscensing in it, like the crossoffice plug in.

If your wanting to get down and dirty with the OS then I would suggest Debian.

I like slackware, I miss my slackware box :(

I've discovered knoppix, it's linux with security tools built in that boots off a CD.

If you want to learn linux might I suggest finding one like knoppix or another distro that boots off a cd, that way if you get lost you can always hit reset and start again, or go back to windows by removing the CD if a dual boot system isn't doable.

^^ just boot into single mode then initiate the init level you want one at a time that way you can fix anything that is broke.
