Okay, ive never really thought about this subject much at all. But tonight on the way home on the train i overheard a young lady (early 20's) talking to one of her friends on her mobile.

Basically they always go into these "stores" which sell animal fur/coats etc.

She was talking about this kangaroo skin jacket she really wanted and she was just going on and on and getting so excited about it, then she was like "oh you should try this other one" and was naming different animal skins..

I thought, f***ing hell, have you no idea how many f***ing animals are going to be exinct purely because you want a f***ing jacket.

Like i said ive never really thought much about the subject myself, but to hear it said out aloud like that was pretty "aweish"

What are your opinions on skinning animals? Let alone extinct ones...

Kangaroos are pests. Kill them, skin them, then eat them.

You know what would be cool? A porcupine coat;)

you cant skin an extinct animal, so you shouldnt have a problem with that.

in before edit.

also, i dont really see a problem with it if its an animal like a kangaroo.. there are so many of them

Whats it matter? Alot of farms in australia have quotas on how many roos they can kill to lower numbers.

Kangaroos have to be culled each year, often in the millions.

As for other animals, obviously it is illegal to kill endagered animals so I don't know what your point is there. For must furs the animals are breed in captivity and killed just like any animal raised and slaughtered for meat.

Think about things before you post retardo threads pls.

they have to cull kangaroos in some areas because there is so many of them, better to make something out of the carcuses (sp?) than just leave them for the faget fox's

just think about early man and what they wore ... animal skins. i'm indifferent to it. i've shot animals. its no different, you're just using their skin, and their meat is probably used as well.

thing is, if you start thinking like that you may as well become a vegie. we eat everything. it may not be morally right, but think about it on a more primitive level. we are the top of the food chain. we eat everything.

who is to say they don't kill the animal, send the meat off to korea or hong kong or something for them to eat (or even restraunts here) and then just make a coat out of the skin that's left instead of letting it rot or just throwing it out.

yea but some animals are killed just for their skin, or their testicles, or some other insignificant folk law aphrodisiac appendage.

not likely.

In the top end they stop watering public parks in the hope that the roos will die off before they reach plague proportions.

And those people claiming it's cruel to kill animals for fashion, better be vegetarians or you'll be branded hypocrits.

but i suppose if i wasnt as nice as i am, things that would be on my wishlish would be:

- baby elephant ug-boots, with a soft nylon padded inner core, and a stylish semi-circle toenail outer shell, with fine adolescent elephant leather. be as cheeky as a baby elephant in these babies! never mind the irony!!!

ps: i hate elephants!!! especially the little ones!!!

im not talking about kangaroos nob jockey. think of rhinos and tigers and endangered things that get killed for ivory, fur and love potions. i hardly think kangaroos fall in that category. kangaroos are fine to cull, i never protested that.

Killing for fashion, and killing for food are 2 diffrent things.

i dont mind animal skin clothing, just as long as the animal wasn't killed just for the skin.

killing for fashion and culling pests are also two different things. Although I will admit that while I have culled many pests I do enjoy the art of hunting, its another sporting interest of mine.

last time I went out in NZ it was amazing, possums are like a plague over there. Semi-auto rifles are still legal, I was with my dad and one other mate and we shot 180+ possums in one night of spotlighting. Much fun was had, yet we went out 2 nights later and we hadn't even dented the population and got another 150+. f*** I'd hate to be a farmer in some parts of NZ - too many pests.

kangaroos don't breed like rabbits, they just have no natural predators that can catch em =)

the joeys maybe in the first few weeks but thats about it

Becuase we cleared lots of aus, kangaroos went you beauty more open space lets f***!

So now we have more kangaroos then ever before in Aus. Hugely unsustainable numbers of them infact. So they have to culled.

Now we could just leave them to rot.
OR
We could try to turn them into a commerically viable enterprise selling both the meat and skins.

Either way they are going to die.

I wish greenies / animal activists had even half a clue. Half the time the rent a crowd mob doesn't even understand what they are protesting against.

Hit the nail on the head there. If people can make money out of them things will get done.

Same with Koalas :) If you served them up for $30-40 a steak farmers would be breeding them like made for the dollah. Throw in a pair of Koala boots and beenie.... no more koala problems! No one gives a s*** about them at the moment because they are not worth anything to anyone.... except the greenies.... damn greenies.

Sure, if the killing is necessary for your survival. But if the killing's done cause you feel like a chunk of cow carcass in a burger from McDonalds, then no, it's not. It's identical.

In the rich western world we don't need to eat animals to survive, it's a 'luxury'. And it's no different than having an animal skinned for your clothing.

Many people claim they couldn't be vegetarians because they "love the taste of meat". Many people love the feel/look of fox hide on their bodies. It ain't any different.

you will find that the skins for these jackets and stuff come off farms like the commercial meat does.

I've personally skinned a kangaroo.

Feels weird pulling the skin of the back of a kangaroo thats still kicking with nerves.

My friend that lives out on a rural property is given a certain number of tags each year from the government, that's the amount of kangaroo's he is allowed to shoot in that year, he never gets through them all.

When a kangaroo is shot, it can be used for its skin, or its meat, but not both.
