Taken from imdb.com:
Boston Globe pop critic Renée Graham has castigated film studios for their increasing tendency to release multiple DVD versions of hit films. Graham points out that Miramax is currently planning to release six different DVD releases of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, noting that Miramax COO Rick Sands recently told the New York Times: "Vol. 1 goes out, Vol. 2 goes out, then Vol. 1 Special Edition, Vol. 2 Special Edition, the two-pack, then the Tarantino collection as a boxed set for Christmas. ... It's called multiple bites at the apple." Graham predicts that the public will soon wise up to the fact that it's being exploited, observing: "Studio suits would do well to remember the hard lessons learned by the record industry. As CD prices inexplicably increased year after year, some fans turned to peer-to-peer downloading services ... for their music fix. The music industry has been crying foul ever since and suing the very people it wants to purchase its product."
This follows from the LOTR DVD series... I think most DVD buyers have wised up to this bulls*** ploy already. I for one will hold out for a while before I buy hopefully the Kill Bill 2 pack. Plus, with p2p downloading and also the premise of DVD burners at lower prices maybe they will have the same probs with DVD as the music industry and we will reap the benefits ;o

I can't see why more people haven't replied to this thread. This absolutely s***s me to tears. No one else bought the 'complete' box set of the Aliens DVD's? Cause now they have a second (I guess 'more complete') box set with 5 DVD's.

I did my degree in Film and TV at uni, and one of the most interesting things I found out about during my course was that 65% of most movies profits are made from DVD sales. It's no wonder when they continually shaft fans of films into buying multiple versions of the one film=/

Heh I clicked on this thread about to say "I can't believe more people haven't replied to this really interesting thread" as well, but some loser beat me to the punch.

I guess everyone is feeling dumb for buying each $150 version each of Lord of the Rings movie. You fools!

What I hate is seeing a new movie like Matrix Revolutions (not that I really actually WANT to see it again, but I like owning complete series where I can) in the stores and having to think "should I buy this now, or wait a few weeks for the deluxe version, or wait a few months for the three-pack?"

well, the 2 lotr releases per movie i believe is justified, as they are targetting are rather different from each other.

the kill bill situation sounds bulls***.

Why oh why do people obsess over additional content, aslong as the movie is widescreen and complete who really cares. After all you don't not buy CD's waiting for the artist to release a box set of their entire career. The only thing that s***s me about DVD's is getting extra mileage from adding extra content to the actual movie "oh look you get 30secs more action" Lord of Rings exempted because they add 30mins+ to the movie but the rest comon Star Wars extra bits who really notices the extra 2mins.

How many people have watch all 5 DVD's of their LOTR box sets, I haven't and not from lack of trying it just wasn't that damned exciting compared to the movie, well some of the stuff was interesting.

Point is nornmal people don't buy every release of a movie they buy the one that suits them, $30 for the movie and just the movie suits me fine, and the extra 3-5mins you add just to promote extra sales s***s me, put it in the cinema release bastards.

I rarely buy DVD's anymore compared to a couple of years ago. I have everything I've wanted to get hold of and I cant be bothered anymore ordering stuff from the USA. And if I want something I only have to pay $10 at work and buy it ex-rental.

Woot!!

. i won't be buying things day-of-release

I've no intention of buying KB, it was obivous there would be a double pack at some stage, i'm happy to wait.

There are so many bands that I would buy box sets of if I could. Also, I refuse to believe that people dont first choose "Bonus Disc" albums over just the LP. Why the hell would you buy just one CD when you can also get a second one for the same price (like a live performance or, in Powderfinger's case, a DVD). I don't think this DVD issue really translates to any other format.

I personally only buy DVD's if the special features look interesting, because I will watch a DVD around 5 times in the first week of owning. If I had the extended LOTR I definately would watch all the DVD's. However, I am surprised how many people bought the 5 DVD version considering most would never watch them all.

LOTR is a totally different story. there have been 2 releases of each film, and they are for a different target audience.

besides, it's not worth paying $120 for the 5 disc, just get the 4 disc for $65, and u still get the behind the scenes dvd's.

i don't really see that there are too many "collectors editions" around. if you didnt' want that version, you woulnd't buy it

I felt dirty on the inside for buying Matrix revolutions ... purely for completeness sake.
