Hey all,

There has been World of Warcraft threads before - and a fair few people showed keen interest in it.

Just a FYI to point Aussies in the direction of www.aussiegamers.net (this is not my website, im just posting it), banding together all aussie players and guilds in order to establish a good community!

Any MMORPG vets who are keen on playing Horde -> www.theblackclaw.com is recruiting (slowly, quality over quantity) anyone 18+ who has experience and aims to be dedicated.

Cheers all, www.blizzard.com/ check out the screenshots!

The beta might be starting soon, and the "friends and family" alpha is going on right now. Any of you guys eligible for the beta? Any of you guys applied for the beta?

Fansites get beta accounts, as do people on the "blizzard friends" list, get on the fansites by getting involved in what they do, and get on the friends list by reporting bugs in the beta.

18+ reason is just to keep things more mature - yes under 18s can be mature, but we would find that over 18s are generally less encumbered by parents/school

I think I might import WoW when it comes out and start a character called Khael on every server.

I know, I only said it because Nikolas said in his first post he was gonna make a character called Khael, so all you're doing is furthering my goal of being an a******, so like I said, suits me fine :)

Besides, I never use Khel in those games, I prefer to think up some crazy stupid name and use that instead.

If it has a worldwide release like most of Blizzard's other games Australia will get it earlier than the others.

It might, or it might not. I'm just going by previous experience with mmorpgs. Generally they come out in the US but dont make their way into stores here until months afterwards. You would think that because its a Blizzard game, with the marketing power of Vivendi behind it, it will come out here at the same time, but then you would think that Star Wars Galaxies, with the marketing power of Sony behind it would have come out here too. Sadly, you'd be wrong, at least on the second count.

I really really doubt bliz would skip smaller countries, mmorpg or not.

I fully intend to ban you if you ressurect old threads.

Based on the release schedule of previous, bigger games (and lets face it, Star Wars IS bigger than Warcraft) I can't see it coming out here first, or even a day after. From memory, the soonest I've seen an mmorpg hit our shores after being released in the US would have either been Asheron's Call which took about a month to a month and a half, or Planetside, which while not really strictly a mmorpg, took a couple of weeks.

Also, based on the fact that Blizzard is centering their testing around US/Canada/Korea then I'm guessing this is what they consider to be their major market, so they'll probably be releasing it there first then the rest of the world after. I'm not saying it'll take forever to come out here after being released overseas, but I can't see it being a blanket release. Of course, seeing as theres been no release date information officially announced, its anyones guess as to what will ACTUALLY happen, I'm just extrapolating from past experiences with mmorpgs.

All beta's that bliz has ever put out, aus has pretty much been left out so you cant read too much into that. (and yes, aus got those games 3 days after it was released in those counties). but seeing as though we got sucha bad record with mmorpg's it might be abit differant, but i still doubt it.

That might be true, but Warcraft as a game compared to starwars as a game. Warcraft would easly be bigger (im just guessing here)

You gotta keep in mind though, this is like no release Blizzard have ever done. Not only are you aiming a different, and smaller market, but its a lot more complicated launching an mmorpg than just releasing a game. If I was Blizzard I wouldn't want to be releasing it to everyone in the world right away, because what if the servers get overloaded and s*** themselves and the whole thing comes crashing down? Its not like Battlenet where if it goes down, you can just play it single player or with your friends, no servers = no game. I'd be wanting to just release it to my main market, make sure everything is hunky dory and fix up any glitches (because no matter how much you test, you can't prepare for everything especially when hundreds of thousands of eager gamers all hit your servers at once), and then when it was all stable, release it to the rest of the world.

I just meant Star Wars as a phenomenon is way bigger than the Warcraft franchise. f***loads of people know what Star Wars is, even people who've never played a Star Wars game. On the other hand, Warcraft means nothing to people who haven't already played Warcraft games. If you went up to the average joe in the street who hadn't really played that many games and you asked him if he'd prefer to play a game where he could be a character in Star Wars, or play a game where he could be a character from Warcraft, I'm guessing he'd pick Star Wars.

That doesn't mean I'm saying Warcraft has a small following, not by any means, but amongst the general population, Star Wars just has more widespread appeal.

MMOGs are unlike other games. They have to provide support and crap and playable servers.

Given there has never been any blizzard servers in aus, I don't think they will start with wow. Which means they can't guarentee a quality of service they might like, so they might just go screw this lets wait till we see server loads and badwidth and crap.

Then there is the whole having lots of players on at 3am to 7am thing and having to employ more people for the graveyard shift in their CSR teams (SOE just setup a call center in india, blizard have one in korea I think).

Then to top it off... we are smaller in population then some urban areas in the states. We are small fry.

And I honestly can't think of any mmog that got released here with in a month of the US date. (Electronic distribution is essentially buying from the us and not being released here).

I can't say it enough, MMOGs are not like other games, in any way shape or form. From release to support to gameplay, THEY ARE DIFFERENT!

In the end it doesn't really matter whether it comes out here straight away or not, anyone who wants it can just import it from the US, express delivery. With the current state of our dollar, it'd prolly end up cheaper than buying it here anyway.

Well, its always good to play in a server when its first starting off and flourising, and you get to keep up with the economy. Then again, anyone who cares enuff about that stuff would import it. meh

Yeah, in theory, thats what an Open Beta is for, but theres always going to be at least a few unforseen hitches when you launch. I dont think there has yet been an mmorpg that has launched perfectly smoothly, and while Blizzard may just go and break the mould with the most perfect launch ever, the odds are definately stacked against them.

due to me not reading all that i might have skipped the answer.. but the reason blizzard limited the alpha testing to korea / usa / canda is mainly because of the close time tables.. besides korea i am not sure what its like, but if u wana get a game tested ofcourse you would throw it to them.

but it is just the time difference between aus -> us and canada is to great.. when we are on they generally aren't and so on

Just heard over at www.warbucket.com that blizzard are distributing a new gameplay movie of wow through bittorent. If you read more into it, you might think they are considering distributing the beta through bittorent.

The reason Korea is getting it is because Korea represents a huge market for Blizzard.
