I remember hearing something a while back along these lines, that Gameboy Advance games aren't region locked? ie, I could buy GBA games from the US and they would work fine on my GBA? Anyone know if thats how it works?

thats correct. games for gameboys from any region will work with any gameboys aside from old gameboys working with gba games for obvious reasons.
