The 9800xt is the next refresh of a 9800pro, so it should be faster (by ~10-15%?).

You're probably right about the bundle with HL being $90 more than without, be interesting to see the pricing.

you only pay for HL... the mods are free unless;

B:you only want a mod-therefore charged for mod eg. cs.(charged by valve)

A:the creators of the mod want to charge, which isnt up to valve, since they didnt make the mod.
EDIT:providing they have a license.

different versions seems weird and this steam bussiness is gay however they are working on it as they always do.

i reakon valve have done good, bothering to stand by their fans while still making hl2, they accually listen to thier fans,

just a pity they listen to fans who know dick all about what should really be done.

once they touch a HL mod it turns to utter s***e

i cant argue with that :D

These specs on the ATI XT reportedly to be bundled with HL2 and also reportedly being announced on Alcatraz in San Franciso..sooon are:-

"ATI’s new graphics monster will utilize a new type of VPU cooler, a more efficient one to cool down the powerful 0.15 micron R360 VPU running at astonishing 450MHz.. Other features of ATI graphics cards will remain untouched: the product will come equipped with D-Sub, DVI-I and TV-Out connectors.

Both versions of the R360 with either 128 or 256MB of DDR SDRAM memory will be clocked similarly and will score 6750 – 7000+ marks in the 3DMark03 benchmark, suggesting that R360 is something more than an overclocked R350 and we should expect architectural improvements as well.
"

It's supposed to be out next month in the US

jesus..
a
450mhz core.. a 65mhz overclock on the core alone on my 9800 made a huge difference to natural selection.. the bits where it used to drop down below 99fps don't occur now :)

and battlefield 1942 - secret weapons.. oh.. so smooth. so glossy

so 450mhz? (that's 170mhz faster on what will effectively be otherwise a very very similar core) that will be so damn fast

obviously memory bandwidth.. yada yada but you get my point

Only worth buying if you don't already have a 9700 (or better). The performance improvements aren't that huge over the current high end cards :(

And while on the topic of ATI, the new 3.8 catalyst drivers are due out on the 8th Oct. Which is probably the 9th here :)

My money is on the IOU card saying "Get me from Steam". In which case the words "balls", "that" and "sucks" come to mind - not necessarily in that order :(

Isn't theinquirer.net known for putting up seriously unverified rumours? Or am I getting it confused with some other site?

The Inquirer does get some of them right though :)

Bard, it depends on what you've got already, how much money you've got, yada yada...

If I had a shedload of cash and *really* wanted to play games that at the moment needed a good vid card I'd lash out and get a standard 9800 Pro (128MB). Of course, if you've got a GF4 TI or better already then there are bugger all games on the market at the moment that will *really* stress it anyway. So in that regard it's worth waiting till HL2, Stalker, Doom3 etc are actually available for purchase and *then* buy a vid card.

Waiting those extra couple months means a few things, (1) The currently available cards (like the 9800Pro) will get cheaper, (2) even newer cards might be released (nv38 or volari duo anybody?) and (3) there will be reviews that will compare how good the various cards actually are. I'd hate to buy a card today expressly for HL2 or Doom3 thinking "Hey this card should be good" when it could in fact be rather less than good, in fact it could be quite crap.
