seriously ud havet o be an idiot to think broadband is s*** or even suggest it....the people who told u that s*** are either too pov to afford a DECENT ADSL or CABLE.

DECENT ADSLS like iinet that is NOT THAT expensive has average speeds of 45-55k on 512.
CABLE to AUS sites/host/dls get around 300-500
and non foregn s*** around 50-250
only at EXTREMELY CRAP ISPS will u see it go at dialup speeds OR if the place ure downloading from is a load of s***

Well, i have been with iiNet since Jan 2002 and i can say that i have had next to no trouble except in the last few months where the isp had various hardware/bandwidth issues. It all seems to be fixed now. I have a 512k adsl account and it rocks. I would cringe if i had to go back to dialup... :)

Well thats my 2c woth.

on 512 you can download over 80 gigs a month, is that as slow as dial up?

With the right ADSL provider there is a world of difference between dial-up and broadband.

Here are some to look at:

For download limted:

Internode ADSL
Netspace ADSL

for Unlimited dowloads:

Netspeed ADSL
OzADSL

Other wise have a look at www.whirlpool.net.au
its the broadband users community pages with listings of all companies boradband.

I am with adsl with a isp on the Comindico network, i have had no problems with them and for price and download limit its better than cable.

of course its not as fast but 55k/sec is better than dial up and not to bad when you consider it all

i get sub 30 pings to websites in aus 50-80 ingame pings and sub 300 on international

I have been on adsl a while now and i am quite happy, check out www.whirlpool.net.au to find out more about adsl, they have pricing plans of all the main adsl isp's

Hey,

lol who ever told you broadband is crap are dicks.

I've been with iiNet for about 5 months now. Last quaterly payment I upgraded from Blink 256 to Blink 512 (6 gig peak/6 gig offpeak).

Last 2 weeks I have had a few problems with connection but earlier today telstra had scheduled maintence (which took longer than expected) but it should all be fixed now.

Hehe, last word is that I love my broadband. I play Planetside/Darkspace and many other games internationally. On dial up you would not be able to do jack.

Have fun

If you download a lot of stuff then sure it's worth it. I'm with TPG, unlimited downloads at 256/64 for $70/month and I get my money's worth and then some. I virtually never get dialup speeds and when I do, it's a problem with whoever I'm downloading from. If you want even more speed then 512/128 accounts are roughly $100/month for unlimited downloads, and there are plenty of ISPs who offer it. TPG, Dodo, Ihug, and many others including the ones Blyth mentioned. My service with TPG has been good enough that I don't see the need to pay extra for a "premium" ISP like Internode.
Do shop around because monthly charges, signup costs (around $100) and extras like a free DSL modem ($130+) can really add up.

It realy all depends how far from the switch you are and how many users. I am a member of Verizon in the USA and get 768 down 348 up. Plenty fast for games etc. In fact I am downloading 3 120MB + games now and have completed at least 3 in the last hour.

I will however be changine to Cable ewhen it's available as it is much faster.

Ausie DSlL users can experience slow connections due to the extreme distance between User and Server. Cable or Satalite may be an option in this case or purchase a faster package.

Interesting topic

Good luck

YEh well Australia DSL is just crap full stop.. Telstra have a monopoly on the whole phone system which is why it costs so much to have such little speeds. US gets this all cheap and most of hte other countries. In north europe you can get T1 speeds for less than AU $100 a month.. Shows how bad we got it.

If you are planning on downloading alot I suggest you get 512kb Adsl with nearly anyone except TELSTRA. Mainly because you find if you get cable you are likely noy to get a big download limit and will have to wait till next week/month whatever to download again.

If you do get cable DONT get telstra and TRY NOT to get optus.
I have telstra cable its s*** and 3 of my friends have Optus cable they say Optus is ok but you could get better sometimes cheaper to.

And what would you know about how good telstra is, ha, dialup boy? I've got Telstra cable and I love it. Off Ausgamers and Gamearena I get around 515kb/s , and in Gamearena servers I get constant 8 ping on bf1942 and I get around 10, even sometimes 3 ping on Soldier of Fortune 2.

Well, i've got Optusnet cable and also get some fantastic pings off some servers. After having cable i could never go back to dial-up. A mate has Telstra cable and he hasnt had any major problems so far.
I know you can get cheaper cable than optus but i have a package deal at home with the phone, pay tv, and cable internet all billed together - it actually comes out cheaper than before when i had Telstra phone, Foxtel and dial-up.

I have a 3gig plan and with optus if you go over you dont get changed nor do they cut you off, they just reduce you to dial-up speeds. I just do all my big downlaods at the end of the month so it wont matter if i run over.

All in all i would give Broadband and Cable in particular a big Thumbs up...

I got optus cable. I have had it for a while, before all the caps came in to the market. I have also had telstra cable as well, back when it used to be uncapped. (I have been on broadband since 2001)
While optus has awesome d/l speeds (600 -700 kb/sec on good servers.) It is expensive for any high d/l limits. I have 3 GB limit and I use all that every month. I'd be happy to sacrifice some of my speed for a better d/l limit. I'm gonna wait and see which ISP's do what in the next few months first.

Im on Netspaces 512k 6gig plan for $69 a month & could not be happier,,, my average gaming ping is between 30-40, I can browse very quickly & I can use their FREE P2P & download 10gig ect free a month on top of my 6gig limit.....
56K is a dark distant bad dream for me, something I could never go back too................

By the way, telstra doesnt control all the network infastructure of Australia, commindico is coming in with their own, independant of telstra,

i'm with optus cable and i get fast as ass speeds, but there is the issue of the dl limit, cable is faster, but less downloads, and shared bandwith with your area/node

Mate, I just got ADSL and it is WAY faster than my 56k dial u, so whoever told you that it was s***e is a damn liar.

Considering that an extra line, excessive dial in costs, and 24.95 a month net access was equalling around 60-70 dollars, i changed to adsl for 79.95 a month to get 512k access with 6gb/6gb quota. It's been a blessing so far. To hell with 56k!

hmm well i think optus may have good speed but there plans suck badly if they dont fix this stupid cap on limits they will lose more and more clients and i am sorry to say telstra have a better deal than optus on cable you d/l local files for nothing and play on the game servers without getting charged with the bandwidth but with optus everything you d/l or play goes towards your 3 gig then you get capped at 28.8 modem speed and it is no good for web browsing or playing any games so optus suck cuase they went under telstras plan with no insentives punishing your clients ant a good way to do business.

Cant remember the name of the bloke who started this thread, but basically dude it boils down to this. You want speed, get cable. You want downloads, get ADSL. Cable pings better than ADSL but for most people its not a problem. My cable plan is 5gig a month Uncapped speed (Upload too), for $75 a month. Top speeds I get are around 700 - 750k download (offpeak time), and 120 - 130k upload. My isp also uses Comindico network and I've found at times they've done some stupidly dodging routing which has periodically affected pings, but on the whole the whole deal is good. Up to you. Btw I'm with www.Ncable.net.au, its local only tho.

Hi m8,broadband is the go son,ive got optus cable and its the best service around i think,f..u.k telstra lol---My download speeds r exellent,i can download from nz and im from sydney a 880 meg file in 20 mins at bout 650 kbs sec,u can get 56k speed sometimes depends on the site your at and the country,im from sydney and download from the usa, asia, europe, and im getting 300 plus kbs averages 140 the lowest,so i cant stress for u to get adsl and try to go with some one other than telstra, try if u can for the optus cable, its bout 150 to connect 1 off fee, then 69 a month flat rate..
