Just read this from australianit.news.com.au, Microsoft and Sony have annouced price cuts for thier respoective console, apparently within hours of each others :).

MICROSOFT and Sony have hit the Australian game console market with identical price cuts as the Xbox reels in PlayStation 2's sales lead.

Both Microsoft and Sony cut the recommended retail price on their respective consoles from $399 to $329, with the announcements made within hours of each other.

Microsoft said the Xbox price cut brought Australian pricing into line with Europe and the US. Similarly, Sony computer entertainment managing director Michael Ephraim said: "Local market conditions have allowed us to facilitate more affordable prices in Australia".

Who the hell came up with that headline? The reason for the price drop is that Sony are clearing out all the old model PS2s. Microsoft don't want to lose sales because of this, so they're matching the price drop.

Actual if you where to buy at Xbox now days rather than when they were first released you would notice that the GPU is has been dropped back to a GF2MX equivalent, plus I hear that more and more PS2 are needing there lens replaced. Hence the price wars
