Wow so many comments about someone you have no idea about except the dribbles that you glean from the 6 oclock news.

Deane was an equity lawyer and then HC judge and is largely responsible for things like Mabo. He did his job in the GG without drawing controversy to it, which is the whole point as the GG is not about the character of the person; you have to be a non-political 'robot' formally representing Australia (beats John Howard or even worse, Alexander Downer - shudder).
I think that Deane, temperedly speaking his mind on very important issues, and in his capacity as an ordinary citizen, is so un-extraordinary, that any of the commercial media or the people who buy into it wouldn't care had they not for the past week been ofocused on the downfall of Deane's successor.

Funny you think that his successor would have made a great GG, after all he did a fantastic job of keeping his mouth shut as Archbishop.
