Funny how threads pop up just when you are thinking about the same thing :) I was looking for a pair of headphones like the Grado SR-80's, but closed would be better as i have two computers in this room and one is a P4 with the noisy stock fan. Of course if anyone even knows of a place in brisbane where i can get hold of the Grado's that'd still be good.

The ones on the bottom are the Philips Hp890 everyone rightly recommends. Extra-comfy general purpose.

The top ones are Pioneer Monitor 10R. I chose them over the rival Koss pair, but chose the Pioneer despite being worth a bit more as it was more structurally sound and comfortable (although these aren't particularly comofortable either), and was fully closed which was what I was after. igot them in Japan and maybe you can get them only there becuase Google Images' only 2 results were Japanese sites.

Goddamnit. Try looking for REAL headphones. If you want audiophile stuff, look at the Grado SR1s. If you want easily purchased audiophile headphones, look at some of the high-end seinnheiser headphones, the ones with their own pre-amps

Sony headphones in the price range ur looking at just plain suck.

Philips HP890's for ~$120
Koss KSC 50/55 for ~$60 (sound better than 890's but not as comfy)
Beyerdynamic DT531's ~$239 (Nice, ask obitor he has a pair I believe.)

They're all good headphones for computer use. Though the KSC-50's are aimed more at the portable market.

Try Video Pro, they always stock good quality products and their sales staff usally know there s***.
Also I think there's a brother company called Audio Pro which might be worth trying out.

btw what are you going to use them for? cause if its just for you're PC, I'm not sure how much improvement you'll hear between top of the line and the mid range gear.

A friend got a pair of sennheiser umm... they were pretty high end. He let me borrow them for a day or two, they f***ing rocked. VERY GOOD.

Look into sennheiser. I think they are regarded as one of the best headphones brnds in the world.

ok, I don't know what your budget is, but I'll list a few cans that are great for the money you pay.

First point: forget Sony. They have a couple of decent models, but charge WAY more than they are worth.

Second point: the looks/size and to some extent specs mean nothing when you are looking at headphones. What matters is how they sound.

So, in increasing price:

KOSS KSC35/50/55 -> all these open phones have the same drivers, and are honestly the BEST headphone you can get under $100 (usually around $60-70).

Philips HP890 -> A good solid open phone. Very large and heavy-ish, but comfortable. Around $110-120, sound quality overall not quite equal to the KOSS, but better in some respects.

Sennheiser HD497 -> The lowest dollar sennheiser worth looking at in my opinion. Slightly better sound than the HP890 and KOSS for around $180 or so.

Beyerdynamic DT531 -> I own a pair of these, and I got them because nothing else under about $350 comes close in my opinion. Now we are getting into "proper" headphones, so all parts are replaceable and repairable. An awesome all-rounder headphone. They're about $240. High impedance, but can still be driven perfectly well without extra amplification.

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro -> One of the best closed phones you can get under $500 (they're just over $300). However, need amplification to sound their best, so be prepared to fork out another $300+ for a headphone amp if you don't already run your soundcard via a high-quality receiver.

Etymotic ER4 -> Awesome. Probably the BEST headphones money can buy. Around $500. I sooo want a pair of these ;)


There are more headphones out there that are good, but these are my absolute favourites up to the $500 mark.

There is one set of sennheiser headphones that cost like $10 000. I think they come with a pre-amp and stuff all built in...

Depends what you want them for.

For a big, bass heavy sound the Sony MDR500DJ or 700DJs are good.

For decent range Sennheiser HD 580-1 all the way.

The etymotic plugs looked interesting, apparently there is a budget model for less than half the price of the others but still pretty good (and still really sealed). I can't see the point in buying really high quality headphones if the noise from outside is going to get in and pretty much ruin it.

well doober, it depends how noisy the surrounding environment is. For example, if you want to go jogging, having nearly total isolation like you get with the etymotics is VERY BAD. Why? You can't hear a damn thing around you, not even a bus :P

The etymotic you're talking about is the ER6, which is a far less expensive phone than the ER4, and naturally doesn't have the same sound quality. It's still pretty good though, much better than say, the EX70 which are Sony's isolating buds.

AKG K55 around 80 bucks

different peaple have different levels of hearing, i have come across peaple who are a bit tone deaf( high and low notes).

try some different headphones out and see which ones suit you, maybe you like the basey ones, maybe the tinney ones.

you can try going around a QGL ( if we ever have one!!! ) and ask peaple to listen to their different brands of headphones.


on a different note, whats a good mic/headphone combo or should i go for just the mic with stand/clip.

I have some sennheiser hd-495s, they cost me like 220 or something a while back. Originally i wanted the 500s i think, doesnt matter now. but i couldnt find any.

however i dont regret it at all, they have been really good, tough as anything, lasted ages. they are open air and really light. the best bit is senneheiser use kevlar reinforced cords or something, i used to break my headphones by running over the cord with my chair. i figured these have detached cord so i can just buy a new cord unlike some headphones. so far i havnt had to, ive run over the cord hundreds of times. good sound, probably not as much bass as some like, mainly due to open air style and the response range isnt as good as others. so ill say anything sennheiser is good.

my brother bought some of those phillips ones lots of gamers use, they ended up breaking reasonably quickly and were pretty heavy. ive dropped my hd495s heaps and they still go good.

i'm just still with my JVC headphones, they do the job for me.

ha, i love my Seinheisser .... cost me 150 dropped from 200 .. they look small, but are really good, all nice and cosy on the ears in these cold winter nights also.

i love my KOSS headphones... got one of the older models, it's a phone/mic combo R/50B nice and bassy and squeeze onto my head just enough to block alot of the outside noise but not so hard as to give one a headache, great long cord and high quality mic plus a lifetime warranty....f***ing awesome

might sound stupid....but if ur gunna spend 300 on them...make sure u have a decent sound card

Operator I spent several months looking at headphones before I got mine, they are Sennheiser HD590s. Cost me $350 on special from $449 at JB Hi Fi. Very good sound, and extrememly comfortable, velvet muffs instead of horrible vinyl ones, and they are circumaural, i.e sit around your ears instead of on top of them.

As Orbitor prudently pointed out, avoid Sony, sure they're nice, but Sony are wildly optimistic with their techinal specifications, and hence the headphones get bought by gits with too much money, or who like a lot of silvery s*** on the ears :)

Also, consider whether you want any noise cancelling properites. If yes, get closed in headphones, if you dont care, get open backed headphones which tend to have nicer-feeling sound in my opinion. Sounds like your listening to speakers in a sound room, rather than being f***ed in the ear by some musicians, so to speak :)

Do what I did, get peoples opinions fine, but go around to good stores and try them all on!
