I didnt, but i saw the wireless hub, just wondering if anyone did use it, and if they noticed any performance drops?

30 people got on in total but 10mb by 30 people isn't much bandwidth

VooDoo generously had a few wireless network cards and a wireless hub to us on loan for the weekend, and I had a bit of a play around with it :)

While the wireless network isn't good for leeching, it's not designed for it, so yeah.

I had a brief little run around in CS while I was there, and it was pretty cool seeing my ping hovering from 0-2 the whole time.

I'll do a little writeup later on about it :)

cyph, how can your ping be from 0-2 on 10mb when i as getting like 30 ping on 100mb?
doesn't make sence

Mr X - not sure how, but most of the time when I looked at the scoreboard in game, apart from noticing my s***ty score, my ping was sitting between 0-2ms most of the time. Of course, we all know how accurate pings in game are :)

Mr X, speed != ping time. ping is to do with how many PPS (packets per second) a network switch can move, due to only a few ppl being on wireless, and 500 on the master switch, the PPS rate would have been a few thousand times smaller on the wireless.

ah ok. Seeing that cs only uses a little bandwith i understand now!

I was next to VooDoo and the hub he had was both 11 and 54MBit. Jab, to the right of him was actually connecting to it, as there was no space left on the hub for him.

Well, that 11Mb is only really half that - then shared amongst x people (and you take extra losses for more people also). I guess you only need a 100k or two for games but it gets pretty clogged.

Check on the brismesh or sydney wireless websites for advice on the best stuff. Then go into your local computer shop and ask them to get your chosen stuff in for you. Bust ask for prices from them first.

ouch? I found the 22mbit and 54mbit cards but they are $212 and $474 respectively

Hmm... so how well is it likely to scale? If it's struggling with 30 people would 300 totally cripple it or could different hubs with different frequencies (or whatever) be used?

Most wireles hugs can accept up to 64 clients .. some only 32, butthat is 802.11 (think that is what it is) the 11bit standard any way. We have d-lnk 11mbit hubs at work for our laptops and they are fine for most things that you do day to day on a network.

I was gonig to use it at qgl but didn't end up going due to unforseen circumstances :(

IIRC, there was a short discussion on the BrisMesh mailing list which came to the conclusion that yes, for 300+ gamers and leechers, wireless would be practically useless.

Although maybe QGL can convince Cisco to loan them a wirless AP and Directional antanna, and aim it at one of the nearby BrisMesh AP's :) Let people who can't attend get in on some of the action as well (but not all obviously, you'd have to restrict access to low-bandwidth services).

Hmmm... so would it be possible to use wireless as the backbone but each table uses regular cabled switches? So that way there are no cables between tables for people to have to run and for people to later trip over.

And intra-table communication wouldn't burden the wireless links cos it'd be handled by the wired switch. Inter-table communication would be limited by the 11mbps link though...

skyrbe, that would be great in theory, but if you have every played games on a 10 mbit network great until someone wants to copy a patch or a service pack and then the whole table lags to aobut 300ms.

10mbit is heaps for games fro 32 players but as i said as soon as 1 file is transfered it then lags.

I remember the problems QGL had a yeronga state school with the comps and 10 mbit netowrks. While comps were on nobody was allowed to transfer any type of file

Yeah I realise that. But leeching is supposed to be banned anyway, and there is no reason patches couldn't be distributed by FTP and rate throttling used on the FTP. Means it takes you longer to get the patch but it doesn't hammer the whole table that way.

Alternatively, you go with a distributed server setup. Basically mirror content onto a number of servers and have one server at each table. It splits up the admins/servers but it's an idea. That way you grab patches etc from the server at your own table through the 100Mbit wired switch.

That is alot of servers. Wireless would be idea for a private comp network though. Block all users except the palyers on the comp network and conenctthe switches together via the wireless and have each team at oposite ends of the hall oroposite rooms ...

An easy private netowrk at a lan i guess, stop dosing and net sends.

Hmm... I'd have thought there were at least 8 servers at QGL anyway (Maybe I'm wrong).

*shrugs* it's just an idea to bounce around anyway. Maybe someone with a better understanding of wireless could work out a better idea.

Wireless is a half duplex system

USED to be, wireless is constintly getting upgraded,

the lower channel u use the better, however the standard for australia is 11 then 2nd is 5.

ive got wireless at home with a belkin 11mps wireless router with 3 network ports,

its works great with 3 pcs and 1 laptop on wireless and 1 laptop on network,(all 3 wireless pcs in seperate rooms to router)

pings are great on this lil s*** router handling 5 computers at once.

pings still 1-3ms, i copied over vmware and a few other big arse files and no ploblems.

that was only on 11mps,

netgear has 54mps
belkin has 54mps i think.
dlink has 22mps(dont kno y they havnt got 54mps yet, it might be a patent thing?)
