I can play any region - infact I've bought non region 4 DVD's at the myer center...

i love my pioneer dvd players (DV-344 on the TV and 106s(16x slotload) on the TV) both were a piece of piss to use multi-region dvds with.

The DV-344 just accepts DVDs of all regions (NO WORK REQUIRED) and the slot load just needed a firmware update and it plays everything fine.

That said region coding sucks because the different regions tend to have different features. For instance i got my folks to bring me back the Kevin Smith Jersey collection (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, dogma and Jay and Silent Bob) all in Region 1 and it's amazing how much more feature packed the DVDs are than the Region 4 counterparts. Mallrats has (among other features) two alternate beginnings to the movies that got cut due to movie studio stupidity.

I think you'll find they cut them because it would have made no sense if the movie had 3 beginnings it would have left the audience wondering but. :P

I know of no such law. For as long as DVD players have been sold in Australia they've either been advertised as multiregion or simply never enforced regions.

my 8x DVD drive was the last dvd to be sold region free, as of the 1st of january the following year, every single drive was supposed to be locked

well whatever it is, DVD players were sold multiregion prior to jan 2001, and multiregion after jan 2001.
