Eons ago, I wrote a review (sorry about the old formatting) for Tiger Hill Entertainment's John Woo Presents: Stranglehold -- a videogame sidebar to Woo's seminal Hardboiled starring the indomitable Chow Yun-Fat, reprising his role as Detective Tequila. The game was actually really fun and captured the spirit of Woo's action stylings with Max Payne-esque gameplay. And now, it's available through GOG.com, DRM-Free. Publisher Midway would go bust not long after the game released and thus, the license never again saw the light of day, nor was there the right amount of promotion around it as a result of financial troubles for it to be seen as 'successful'. But at the time, Stranglehold was a fantastic game that featured bullet-time, interactive cinematic moments inspired by Woo action sequences, the most destructible environments in videogames at that time (according to the devs), and Chow Yun-Fat. Seriously, what's not to love here?! Maybe one day someone will see the value in Tequila once more, with white doves and cathedral spaces, or tea-houses being demolished in bullet-time. But for now, if you never played it, give it a burl. It's great. |
