The Bad Company 2 beta landed at 4am AEST this morning as promised; it's proven to be quite the popular download! We launched it on time this morning and despite some weird site hiccup it has been churning out quite happily for a few hours.

Yeah, I haven't got into a game either. Tried the server browser, and that crashed the game, so then I tried the "Play Now" option, and either it would time out trying to connect to a game, or it would put me in a game, spend a minute loading the map, then dump me back to the main menu telling me I've been kicked.

using history through up some servers, all overseas , got into a game. now using history crashs the game.

joystick support of fubar, twist axis works, able to use joystick buttons to fire works

x,y axis to move forwards/strafe/backwards is all messed up...

joystick support is not that hard to get right from the get go...

I managed to get into a server using the History tab and clicking on a server with 31 people playing.

I'm pretty sure the failure to connect message is just the server slot filling up with someone else who clicked at a similar time as you.

The game itself seems pretty good, the lag wasn't too bad considering I was playing on US server.

There are huge amounts of people trying to play this game, especially for the first few days. There are probably not enough servers available, thanks to withholding publicly available dedicated servers.

So what is happening is a billionty people are trying to join very limited servers and you and many others all try to join the free slot that just opened up on server X.

There can be only one...

Just try it a few times seems to work eventually for me. But it looks like my poor computer has met its match even on low settings.

its great fun finally got on a server, just crashed out though...

Been playing this for a bit now, unfortunately on a yank server due to having to use 'play now' (worked first go).
Zero problems so far, gets a bit choppy at times on my rig at 1680x1050 with 2xaa and BOAG set to OFF (it was terrible with it on).
Playable kind of choppy, but noticeable in huge fights when multiple buildings are being destroyed and trees falling over.

In saying this, I'm not sure how much of it was actual 'server lag' as such because I seemed to move fun and my weapon sway seemed to be fine, it was more everything else going on that seemed a bit choppy (other peoples movements etc.)
With a local server this would kill MW2 multi-player imo.
Nothing funnier and more awesome than jumping an ATV over a hill and over an enemies head with you and someone else on board.
Also pulled off a pretty B.S. snipe headshot on some guy on an ATV at close range full speed, the animation of the head jerking back and flying off the ATV as it sped onwards for awhile was awesome.

Brings back a lot of memories of the old BF series, with vehicles being an integral part of it, but not an overpowering presence as they have been previously.

So far, I like it.

My Rig: Probably a constant 40-60fps at least when not a lot happening - not sure of settings to display it to be certain.
Probably dips into the 20's occasionally when in the huge open areas with the snow storm blowing around, trees falling and lots of gunfire/explosions etc.

You need to opt into the steam beta so you get the dx10 overlay fix

Hmm, they might have compiled with some debug symbols though if it's a Beta - does it send some bug report or something if there's a crash?

Dazhel might be able to shed light cos I think the BF series is all in C#.NET with Python for scripting scenarios and what not.

Finally got into a game, but it was on some german server with a 500ms ping. Could maybe be fun if I had a decent ping, but it was just frustrating trying to play it with that amount of lag.

Destructible building stuff seems cool though. Vehicles felt like s***, but once again, could have just been the lag. The maps, or at least the one map in the demo, is pretty tiny compared to the old Battlefield maps. Yeah not sure about the actual engine they use.

I have this little gem in my bookmarks on embedding Python into C/C++ which I did once. It's really bloody cool. I hate Python with a passion and it's difficult to debug scripts, but for prototyping and level scripting for scenarios (like capture the flag or whatever) it's so easy - and you don't have to restart your game/level to try different stuff which is the main reason to do it. You just alter the script and try the action again.

Destroy 2 and the map opens up more (linearly however) - The battle can be pushed back to the beginning I think.
Either way, the vehicles I think in BC2 as I said seem to be more of a strategical 'push' tool rather than 'I'm gonna fly this plane/drive this tank for the whole map and just potatown'.

Lag is a bit of a bitch with the broken browser currently though :/

My game crashes whenever I click on the server browser though :( Or has that been fixed in the last couple of hours? The news ticker at the bottom of the screen when you're in the game said they were working on a patch for it.

easiest way to get on a GA server is to edit the GameSettings.ini and change RecentGames= to RecentGames=GameArena; and then load the game and click on the Servers tab on the right. Should show all the GA servers without the client CTD

When playing on local servers though.. .EPIC.... FUN!

I love using the UAV a lot mostly because people seem to forget about it...
Though it is slow to fire and very very small splash damage, but its great for assisting to take out vehicles or snipers.

I have been at the starting UAV contol computer (as attackers) and sent it to the final two bomb points and slawed it up so much with it they jumped in a Black Hawk and choppered over solely just to kill me.
Not sure why they sucked at just shooting it down, two sniper shots does it :)

Mate of mine had artifacting problems (8800's in SLI) - Driver updates fixed this.

Otherwise, game runs alright/gameplay is fine. The menu's feel more 'alpha' but otherwise on my rig its beta worthy.

Im confused. The game didn't ask for a Beta key when I installed. But now I cant get it to log in to the stupid EA server with the email address and password I know is correct at EA.

Haha fixed it. Had a mental block and forgot to update my graphic's driver.
Now running reasonable smooth though the gameplay is extremely chaotic.

I never really liked the BF2/1943 games as the accuracy was out and just seemed a cut below what it needed to be. This is awesome fun as it's fast and I can headshot people across the map reasonably well. Pistol as a backup is pro, it will pwn 2 people at close range. The vehicles are fun but it's fairly easy to get taken out but if played well you can survive for ages.

I had a map with a medic behind me while I sniped from on top of the hill and every time I died to another sniper or mortar fire, he would rez me and I'd keep going; picked up about 40+ kills on that map. :D

just had a quick bash this morning, kept getting disconnected, but then i noticed windows firewall was blocking a connection, so hoping that fixes it;

runs pretty smooth on medium settings on my 3g dualcore + 260

really does feel like bf 1942

will have another bash later, was good fun;

i think its way more fast paced than bf1942/bf2

its like modernwarfare but alot more hectic (tanks camping spawns, very very busy battles)

i still havent made up my mind yet - i guess if there was a bigger map with wide open spaces it wouldnt be so cramped. you die really really fast cause there is so much crap going on

controls feel kinda gumby. whats with not being able to strafe while sprinting?

I got it going. Uninstalled, reinstalled, it then let me log in to the server.

When i try to laucnh i now get "staem servers are currently too busy to handle your request, please try again later" or "steam is having trouble connecting to the steam servers"

This happened to me with MW2 and the only solution was to reinstall MW2, yet strangely enough when i fixed this, I took my PC o a friends place and it worked fine from his net connection... (though ghosted his install over mine to be safe)...

Any ideas/work arounds/anybody else get this?

I have a feeling its a steam fault since it happened with MW2 around last patch time.

Should point out that I've tried deleting steamui.dll, steam.dll and clientregistry.blob
No avail :/

Thanks for the key, really brightens my week after some arsehole hit my bike in a carpark this almost makes me feel good lol.

This game is pretty fun. I like the UAV lots, except it doesn't want to fly up for me.

I've been using assault class mostly and been spanking lots of people. I think it is the third unlock gun that I'm still using, all the others are kind of crap, the third pistol is good though.

Pistols are actually good to use in this game, unlike previous battlefields.

Sighs, if people are playing then it is obviously my steam that is beyond f***ed.
Getting a real distaste for steam these days.
Everytime a patch comes out it breaks.

Tried deleting entire steam directory except steamapps and let it re-download.
Now its just stuck on 'download starting...'

I'm using a non-steam version downloaded from 3FL.

As for the steam version, perhaps your download was corrupted. You may have to download it again, or do that 'verify integrity of game cache' located after right-clicking in game install in the My Games Tab (it will be in the 'local files' tab).

I've had Team Fortress 2 do a similar thing and that fixed it, turns out 1 file was corrupted.

Nope, tried that says they were verified fine.

Just tried randomly deleting a few files from BC2 directory.
(Namely small main DLL, the Executable and the NCF file from the apps directory to force it to redownload...)

Still same s***, starts the install bar starts progressing then dumps with the error that steam servers are too busy/trouble connecting.

Same s*** happened to my MW2 few weeks ago.

Shame, because I really cannot stand MW2's SubMachineRailGun's.
Retarded accuracies at stupidly long ranges in that game.

Deleted the whole directory, still cannot cannot to steam servers.

Where can i find a key for this game? i just wasted 1.5gigs of download for this game to find out there are no more keys left... i was really looking forward to playing this.

Nope, wasn't using anything to block connections.
This just seems to happen to my steam when some games are patched, its a pain.

Fixed by taking my HDD to a mates place and just transferring their BC2 steamapps and the ncf file... real pain to have to do.

Also just fired it up through my steam whilst there just to be sure.

Not sure what the go is with disconnects, same friend of mine I was just at has the same problem, timed it..
4mins 35 seconds approximately, always the same time frame and gets 'lost connection to server'.
Attempted DMZ while we were there, still the same problem.
So it's not a port issue.

Unknown what the issue actually is, as I don't suffer from the disconnect problem when I play.

Still the same problem as spook.. keep getting disconnected.

I really like how destructible the environment is. When attacking, I try to get into the tank and blow the crap out of the walls near the first Alpha Capture point makes it heaps easier to attack.

Not liking this at all. Its too arcade like for me. If Im going to play a combat shooter. It should feel far more real and engaging than this.

no crashes here either. server browser is fine. i just altered the gamesettings file to show gamearena servers in the history tab. only problem with the browser is that you have to wait for it to search for every server thats available before you can go to the history tab. this can take up to a minute :/

I'll admit, its better than I expected it to be, but I'm still not sold on it, can't put my finger on why but something about it just doesn't feel quite right, it just feels a bit off. Maybe its the feedback you get from shooting people? I dunno, but it just doesn't seem satisfying when I gun someone down, don't get a satisfying amount of "You hit that guy!" type feedback from the game, and without the obituaries showing up in the top corner sometimes I can't even tell if I killed someone or not.

Gonna give it a few more goes tomorrow, see if it grows on me some more.

Ridiculous. I got a key with my preorder, it says its in use. They wont supply me with a new one and I miss out on the damn giveaways by seconds.

You just know its people who already have keys collecting them up.

I've seen so many people selling them for $3-$5 a pop, which is ridiculous, considering you can preorder for $10.

If anyone has downloaded it and wants to have the added bonus of using steam chat while playing, here is a fix I found. First, add the game as a non-steam game, locating the .exe of the actual game, not the updater. Then, once that is added, go to the main steam window, go settings and you'll notice a beta opt in option, choose steam client beta. It'll restart and swap you into the beta, and from there, launch the game as per usual through steam (or create a desktop image, right click > create desktop). You should then be able to shift+tab and talk to friends! :)

finally got mine working, had to turn on dmz though

I had no problems playing downloading, installing and then playing with the play now option or the join server option.

I find the game quite fun to play, a little bit repetitive as it is the same game play over and over.

Once I joined to a paris server, the lag and delay was bad but nothing you couldn't adjust for. After playing for 10 minutes I was top of the ladder.

Does anyone know if you will be able to keep your rank once the game is released or will everyone start at square one again?

for those having network issues - I found I had to open ports 18181 and 18186 through my firewall. (I used both tcp and udp)

You'll do fine mate, probs low settings or medium with a bit of tweakage. @sLiNky, it will seem repetitive, but at least its a massive map. And I like that it's not all open as soon as you start, you have to destroy the first 2 comm's before opening up more. Heaps of fun, hopefully they'll unlock more maps

I actually thought there was a bug because I put up about 40 keys and after I did that, it showed zero available.

I looked closer thinking I'd screwed something up - but basically it looks like a bunch of people had been sitting there hitting refresh on that page and snagged them the INSTANT they were available. So they all got munched basically instantly.

Sorry to those that missed out! We're trying to get some more though but it probably won't be until late Monday (when EA/Dice are back in the office).

Anyone found a fix to the 4-5 minute 'lost connection' issue?
Mate tried running DMZ off the router (i.e. all ports fully forwarded) with no luck.. don't think its a port issue.

Some other people had the issue on here, anybody solved it yet?

Not happening to me on my machine but a friend of mine it happens to.
Never had punkbuster installed on my machine before and I don't get kicked.......

Also thought punkbuster was installed with the game if it was needed anyway (besides which, I certainly didn't manually install it or change any options for it).

Seems to happen with a fair few people.

My Machine: Vista x64 (GTX 275)
Friends Machine: Windows 7 (SLI 8800's)

Just played for about an hour or two, it's pretty good fun. I was just dying over and over to begin with, but I'm getting into it now, getting in the top 3 last few rounds. Looking forward to the full game.

there is some collision detection crash to windows bug i've had a couple of times, usually just as i see an rpg hone in on me,
had a wiered one before, every time i re-spawned had a nade in my hand, had to tap enter twice to throw it, funny thing is, i haven't even unlocked nades yet....

I've played a bit today and it's fun so far, but not all that much different from the other BF games.
I've read that there's a problem with certain joysticks - the game doesn't recognise the throttle on mine (Logitech Cordless Freedom 2.4), and it looks like the axis is inverted as well.
Gameplay overall is pretty good, although I think I've been on mostly foreign servers and the lag is a bit nasty. I joined a couple of Gamearena servers through the browser, but both times I crashed :(

I haven't had it, but it sounds like it's punkbuster kicking you.

For some reason I get a feeling that punkbuster is actually not running atm. I had pb "couldn't get latest version" type diagnostic errors come up (the pb setup thingy you get when you launch BC2 for the first time).. But I'm still playing for hours on end with no interruptions... They might be looking for hackers and how they are hacking before they enable PB???

If anyone has downloaded it and wants to have the added bonus of using steam chat while playing, here is a fix I found. First, add the game as a non-steam game, locating the .exe of the actual game, not the updater. Then, once that is added, go to the main steam window, go settings and you'll notice a beta opt in option, choose steam client beta. It'll restart and swap you into the beta, and from there, launch the game as per usual through steam (or create a desktop image, right click > create desktop). You should then be able to shift+tab and talk to friends! :)

I actually just forced the game to run in DX9 mode. The overlay works, and it looks exactly the same from what I can tell. DX10 mode seemed really laggy for some reason. Not so much the framerate, it jest felt unresponsive on my machine. One of my mates said it was near unplayable for him, but runs perfectly under DX9.

For some reason the default "medium" settings had AA turned on, which can hit frame rate pretty hard.

I had to go to advanced settings for the graphics to turn it off.

For some reason it won't let me turn AA past 1x. I've never seen an option for 1x AA in a game before. Judging from how it looks, I'm assuming 1x AA is the same "off."

one time I was defending the comm things as recon, planted a few c4 around it (like planting C4 on a flag in BF2) and blew it up accidentally... didn't even know you could blow up your own comms... mega fail lol

having said that I didn't even know the attacking team can simply blow the comms with C4, what's the f***ing point in planting the bomb thing and standing around for half an hour waiting for the defending team to disarm it???

I don't think it is meant to be so easy to take out the comm station with C4, I believe they will be addressing that, and they will stop ff on it.

All the higher level rank upgrades have been given impossible to get points to unlock, like adding 10000000 to the score needed.

O yer, those puppies pwn tanks good.

They also stick around for the map, even if you change class.

As defender, go Engy with Mines and munition damage upgrade + upgrade that gives you more mines. Run to the roads and drop mines down where you think tanks will drive over, also 1 or 2 in the forest next to A.

Then run around with your shotty until you eventually die, switch to sniper with tasty 12x scope and mortar upgrade and start killing people and mortaring stationary campy tanks, top score k thx bi.


edit: Also, don't plant mines too close to the Comms... I killed the guy who started the timer ... and took out my own comm station, damn it.

New keys are currently on hold to give retail partners a chance to sell more games - if you want a key you'll have to pre-order the game for now.

I suspect there will be more keys available though later, so stay tuned.

The last 2 nights I switched to the Assault Ninja C4 with Thompson M1A1 combo and proceed to blow up the Comms.

The first point A is incredibly easy to destroy with this method. It is easiest if you grab the Tank and drive straight ahead and down to Point A, take it slow over the drop and you don't take damage. Then you rip up the fences by driving along the fence line and kill anything around, when the tank is almost dead hpo out and Ninja C4 Point A (even without vehicles it is pretty easy).
Once that goes it doesn't take long for the rest of the team to take out point B. If for some reason they can't, just hang around for a Tank/APC thing and drive it to point B park it in front of the Comms unit so it gives you cover while you Ninja C4 the point, only takes about 5 seconds to lay down all your C4 (you will need all of it) and blow it up.

You can usually get Point B of the 2nd stage with a ninja C4 run if you hang around the edge of the map and move as soon as the 2nd stage opens up, otherwise you just have to bide your time until you get a chance to make it to a Comms unit, grab the APC if possible.

The 3rd stage is a litter harder if you don't Ninja Point A asap. The 4th stage is super easy, run up the side of the pipes and around the back, kill the helicopter campers and blow up Point A again.

I really, really hope that being able to take out the Comms units with C4 will get nerfed somewhat, make it take at least 2 lives worth of C4.



O and people that camp the Hill with the TANK/APC thing as Attackers annoy me. A single round of mortar strikes can take out a camping tank. IT'S A TANK, GO IN CUT SICK, blow up the anti-tank emplacements while you drive in.

^^ O and mines totally counter that hahah.

This game would be eleventy billion times better without tanks.

toll it takes 5 c4 to blow up the comms. you can only carry 3 (unless there is an upgrade i havent got yet) at a time. i plant all 3 c4 then throw down the ammo crate and get 2 more, use those and then boom!

sometimes ill plant the c4 then hack the comm and wait for some enemies to come take it back and then blow the comm up in their faces.

Yes, you need the Munitions upgrade, take the extra damage and the other one with extra explosives. Hence the Dedicated C4 Ninja, if you go assault you have to use the WW2 M1A1 Thompson ahah.

It is pretty crappy compared to the other guns, but it must annoy people when they get killed by it. you really have to fire it in 3 bullet bursts.

I have to admit, the game was better without the C4 Ninja Caps.

What they should do is cap the damage output from combined C4's, so even it you plant 5 in one spot, it should only do the damage of 3. It forces the Ninja Cap to take longer, 10+ seconds is plenty of time for the Defenders to stop you.

Anyone come across anything re: the 5 minute dropout issue?

Been doing digging around for a friend with this issue.
It seems it could be related to some routers and their default TCP timeout values.
Apparently increasing this value if you are able to with your modem, will resolve the issue entirely.
This was also an apparent problem in Battlefield 2142 and was an EA Master server issue.

It could also explain why people who get the 5 minute dropout issue also take a lot longer to retrieve stats than those who don't.
Would also help with the issue that Port Forwarding or even running in DMZ mode does not fix the issue as it's not a forwarding issue so much as a timeout issue with the EA Master Server and not the Game Server.

Trying to find a guide on how to change this value if at all possible on a Billion BiPAC 7300A (If memory serves that was this fellas router)


Anybody able to test my theory out?

i have to turn on the dmz on my router when im going to play. (billion 7300g)
u make sure you forward all traffic to your pc when you turned on the dmz?

just make sure when you are done playing, you remember to turn it off.

Didnt have to dmz mode my pc, just had to allow it through the windows firewall when it popped up the first time I connected. Putting your pc in the DMZ, even temporarily while playing the game is a bad idea.

I've had 4 crashes and I know what causes it.

If I push the talk key (j) just before the splash screen turns up at the end of a match, it often crashes. I use it sometimes to quit the game quickly...

For the people who want loads of aussie servers in their favourites list so they don't have to scour through server browser, you can modify your GameSettings.ini file (located in C:\Users\*user*\Documents\BFBC2Beta) to include these words in the FavoriteGames section: Sydney;Perth;[3FL];GameArena;

So it looks something like this

This will add all servers with the name Sydney/Perth/3FL/GameArena into your favourites section. I found it off a different site, tried it and it works very well.

GameSettings.ini is the file - about 4th from the bottom

I've been playing heaps and had no crashes and no disconnects... always connected to a game instantly.. i just go to server browser and look for game arena servers then look for one nearly full connect and im playing

Hardcore servers are the way to play this game.

only a dozen ga servers show up in the history tab now and they are all the empty ones. it used to show around 40 or so.

I have all the GA servers under my Favourites and they are all showing up.

what's with some of these annoying things:

there are times where you can't type? (I think it's when you die)..
when you die you can't chase other players (only squad members).. Also you can't chase squad members when they are in a full vehicle..
you can't check what server your on when ingame.
when you launch BC2, it doesn't remember the weapons/perks you chose for your class from a previous game.
you can't check scores (pressing tab) when you are dead.

any others people can think of?

The AA tank is ridiculously good at shooting down choppers, but all the noobs take it straight into the fight against infantry, which it's s*** at and get it blown up :/

Check out http://ultimateprestige.com/ There is a heat seeking missile launcher that is an unlock. It's also easy as to tracer dart the choppers.

That doesn't happen to me. Check your keybindings that you don't have 'enter' as your get in/out key. That brings up the spawn/layout screen.

In your settings.ini file probably located in documents\BFBC2Beta directory.

Change the line so it reads:

DxVersion=9
Bloom=false
HSAO=false

Also, make sure you are using 8x Ansioscopic filtering, the game can be extra laggy by turning it any less for some bizarre reason.

Dunno about keybindings though :(

I just went through another game spending %50 of the time just as a spawn point for aggressive players to swap teams and move up...


10 mins is a looooooong time to sit there and do nothing.

for anyone who's interested - EA has Battlefield Vets running - so you can get a free uber weapon (M1 garand - level ~20 weapon) upgrade.

just fill in your cd key or username/pass for that each of your previous Battlefield games (yeah they have xbox and ps3 versions there too) and upgrade your weapon kit from day one ;)

I heard 15... I thought this was pointless however as you'll obviously utilise the 'extra C4' function with another person, load up a quad bike and it's biz as usual.

But that takes teamwork and a bit of coordination so its OK.

I hope servers turn off that "report target" marker that shows up on your HUD. Once you get that on you might as well suicide.
