I am debating whether we should put in that annoying 'digg this item' s*** on some of our news items.

It's only worth doing though if there's enough people that actually use digg that read things to give it that initial bump it needs to get on the radar of all the rest of the digg junkies who make things go up and down.

So - my question is, how many of you guys actually use digg? Note, by use I don't mean "read the occasional item", but I mean actually bother to digg/bury items.

Do you use digg? (actually use it to digg/bury items)

digg to me is nothing but a link/lolcat/funnies/bandwagon portal. I use it mainly for entertainment, not to become informed about anything.

I initially used to digg/bury comments and stuff in the replies, but realised how broken the system was with people being able to moderate other posts with no limitation nor meta-moderation (slashdot-style). So basically my effort was for nothing as someone who says "porn lol" gets the diggs, while someone with actual useful information in his post gets buried for no reason. And then you have the businesses that thrive on promoting articles for a fee, using whatever bot-networks and accounts they have.

I guess it's worth a shot for the occasional useful article, but unless your article has the suffixes [PIC], [Video], [NSFW] or the words 'boob' or 'scientology' in there somewhere (or whatever the latest bandwagon involves), it's an uphill battle.

parabol, totally agree, digg comments are utterly utterly retarded most of the time so its more or less a complete waste of effort to do anything with them.

digg is a 'social bookmarking' site - basically people submit articles of any variety and people vote on them. Good articles make it to the front page, bad articles drop off the list (good is subjective as any democratic thing).

It is somewhat unremarkable other than its extreme popularity and widespread use, so it is a valuable source of traffic if you can make your way onto the front page, or even the sub-section front pages.

www.digg.com - its pretty self explanatory from a simple look

Digg is good ... easy way to catch up on news around the world, and there is a pretty good community on there.

I did some research on social bookmarking for a uni assignment a while ago. It was interesting that at the time the digg demographic were 90% male and IT professionals... no idea if that has changed these days.

Digg is good if a lot of people in your community support it and actually digg things, it's the only way to get things bumped to the front page of digg.com. The people on digg.com don't troll through all the listings, and tend only to look at the stuff in the first few pages, so you pretty much need your own people to sign up and click the icons.

Not according to this article linked to me by digg - http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/the_web/article3511863.ece

To be honest, I don't think QGL has news items or forum posts worthy of attention beyond its own website. (that includes AGN essentially) You dont break any stories, the site doesnt offer anything different to the hordes that already get dug. (not to users outside the site anyway) IMO don't clutter this site or digg with extra s***...

At the end of the day, the only real reason for the site to add a digg link is to get lucky with a massive hit of users and drum up ad revenue, so if you need it do it otherwise, whats the point...

No it seems that random consumers between the age of 30-60 do 60% (or was it 60% of people within that age group do shopping online...hmm can't remember)of their shopping or find out about products to buy online. The trend at that time showed that people aged between 30-60 were taking over MySpace as well.

i'm indifferent

if it benefits you (hence keeping this site viable) then go for it

like scuzzy i wouldn't use it anyway, same as other stuff here.
just cause it's here don't mean you have to use it.
i'm happy just looking around, keeping up to date, finding helpful info, having a laugh, and getting good advice (well advice anyway)

keep up the good work!!

I am specifically asking because we are planning on changing this in the very near future; we have already started - we have in fact got quite a lot of new content happening, lots of which is the first time it has been available (in australia at least)

Being totally honest and thinking about it a little more, there has been some game previews that 'steve' has gotten onto, which is pretty cool to see. I suppose if thats the climate the site is now in,there might be a point.

I lose probably 2 hours productivity a day to digg.. and this.

A lot of the threads that end up in here were posted on digg earlier, same with most ausgamers news.

Believe it or not (I can see why many wouldn't), we actually get a lot of stories up before, or extremely soon after, they appear on digg. I've submitted a few to digg in the past, but you need to have that initial batch of users who are blindly prepared to digg your s*** to get it on the radar - which is what we don't have - so none of our stuff is ever digg'ed before some other a****** makes an article about it and gets all his fake accounts to spam it.

I've never given a crap about it because I've always been happy with our little community, but we're making a concerted effort to increase both the volume and quality of our news coverage, and part of that is (sadly) link whoring ourselves out to all the social bookmarking sites there are - at least in the short term.

I honestly think that we're going to be providing better coverage for games that a lot of other sites that people read (..not that we're not already), and I can guarantee you that that recent gamespot sort of s*** will never happen on AusGamers. We've always been interested in one thing - given the Australian gamer the infoz and filez and newz that is relevant and useful to them, and a big part of that for us is being able to say when we think things suck, because its important for people to know that.

If a Lan was announced, you'd get at least 500 dicks.

On a more serious note, is Ausgamers and QGL forums trying to change its image from a gamers forum to something similar to OCAU?

No, our focus will always be mostly games and things that are of interest to gamers; hardware etc will always come up but not to the same level of detail

What like a website you could populate with say rss feeds from your favorite sites... getting little snapshots here and there of the articles that you would like to read.. maybe being to embed some sort of media players on it aswell?? (say video trailers, podcasts etc)

oh s***e.. igoogle pretty much has that done troggles and if you drink the koolaid even more from google, google reader is pretty dammed handy aswell..

Having said all that it'd be good to see ausgamers grow and be a bit more but eventually it will become the clusterf*** that is ign (hah or even Gamearena, holy s***e what have you done to that main page...)

nah, nothing like that. I'll be posting about it more later today so people can check it out. Its not a google-killer or anything, just a tool we hope people will find useful.

Maybe if QGL didn't have A) some of the most homo advertising in the known history of the Internet and B) some of the worst product design process I've ever encountered, I'd enable javascript on my browser.

a) we typically ban people that tell us outright that they take steps to block our ads. might be time for a rule update with some simple pointers so people stop getting banned for being asshats

I did block an ad on the feedzero site.. only because it hid the debug box thingie and i wanted to click it to see if anything broke (but it came back after a refresh anyway..so i guess they got around that block proggie) The ads aren't that intrusive anymore since they stopped with the mammoth big f***off roll overs of doom.. i do still have trouble getting a page to render with any speed but im putting that down to a combo of the yay yay fun senesis site and me being the UK not agreeing with each other...

hahahaha oh dear... i feel very sorry for the 'web dev' minds at telstra then.. if they figure its the way forward.. Hell they could take some cues from foxsports or nfl.com as very heavy content sites that manage to display whats OMG YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS relevant in a playable box up the top and the straight up need to know stuff right close by via headlines and 'my team' (account customisable team specific news).. But all the cues in the world won't help when you haven't got content..

Get content trog and figure out how to let the world see it after

You guys seriously aren't trying to defend some of the mega invasive adds that have waddled on to here (and will no doubt make more appearances in the future) are you ?

ps. typo the stuff you may be blocking are not hosted on the same server as the rest of the stuff so you can allow ausforums and ausgamers in NoSscript (if thats what you are using)...

I don't specifically turn off JavaScript to avoid your advertising. Not getting your lame arse advertising just happens to be a happy side effect of blocking javascript. I don't mind the concept of paying for access via having advertising on your site, but your advertising content providers have been f***ing hopeless.

b) I am intrigued to know what you think our design process is

I don't normally engage you (any more) when you ask what I think about anything because it normally ends up with you venting about how much I must hate your guts, and you attempting to punishing me. However, because you specifically asked for my impressions I'll give them.

My impressions of your design process is based off of the 'conversation' we've had in regard to a number of s***ty products you guys have released, including the Ausgamers website, your f***ing horrible game finder client and even down to the way you structure leagues and processes.

1) We briefly looked around at a bunch of other places and that's what they had. We didn't actually attempt to understand why they did certain things in certain ways, we just replicated them without giving any real thought. We don't even attempt to understand why some of our products are really successful and others aren't. If we find that product A is more successful than product B, but we want product B to be our flagship, we just f*** our users and force them to change. f*** em, they'll get used to it.

2) We personally think something is a great f***ing idea. We haven't talked to anybody our idea until we release it. We don't even know if anybody else wants what we are doing. But we're going to invest a metric f*** ton of time and effort and go spastic if it isn't well received.

3) Anybody who criticise my our awesome ideas obviously hates our guts.

you really are a pompous prat typo
