YARLY: Starting today, Steam users may download full versions of these best-selling and critically-acclaimed games, including the complete DOOM series and QUAKE I - III, including mission packs, as well as id's pioneering PC side-scroller, Commander Keen and vintage favorites Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Heretic, and HeXen. As part of the id Welcome Celebration on Steam, select id packages are being offered with a 10%, limited-time discount. The press release has more details, including the full list of games that will be made available. If anything was going to tip the scales in Valve's favour, it's probably this. They've built what is probably the best distribution system for online games (despite me having some extensive reservations about the system it is still almost unarguably the best option out there for gamers and publishers). |

That looks pretty cool but whats the deal with the graphics. Will the games be using opengl or whatever to make them look decent or will the older games look like complete ass on bigger monitors?

I'm assuming they're just the original games except for maybe GLquake? I wonder how the Steam delivered factor affects the ability to run third party enhancements. I guess most source ports run pretty standalone, all they need is the .wad or pak files so zdaemon, fuhquake et al _should_ still work fine if you buy from Steam.

Whaaaa, no Keen 6? No Keen Dreams? Booo.
Be interested to know how much the Q3 pack is, consiering you can pick it up for like $5-$10 in bargain bins as Q3Gold. |

firing up some original quake would be good, but are there not open source versions based on the source code out there now? Is there anyone who has played the oss verus the original who can recommend the best one to go for?

I was most unimpressed to fire up the original Steam-Quake only to find that it runs in oldskool software mode.
God help me... Q2 is prolly gonna be the same. Who knows what they've done to Q3a *sniff* |

soooo if the likes of Quake 1 is running in software mode, I assume this means no net play for games like DoomII? I love the idea of this ID mega pack (though i own pretty much all of those games already) but you think they could go to a bit of effort to spruce them up a little for steam like the rehashed games on xboxlive and the PS3 store have been. Wonder what the likleyhood of updates on these games would be in terms of net play / gl patches etc.

steam is only being used for a CONTENT DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM.
The game is the same as if you purchased it. |

Insom just move your entire steam folder to another location and delete the ClientRegistry.blob file.
run the steam .exe to log in and it's business as usual you can literally map the Steam folder off a fileserver somewhere and it runs great (if your lan runs on gigabit) last edited by koopz at 18:01:15 05/Aug/07 |

everything runs great...
however Q3a and associated mods don't work with COGS, and for some reason niether does linking GA IPs directly once inside Q3a.. ((all I get is a "LPB only error")) what gives? every other server works fine once you dl the mod... /me fires up ServerQuery |

Apparently too, Valve are using DosBox to launch all of ID's dos games.
In the Dosbox GPL license it states that every file must be included in where ever DosBox is installed\used. Valve have removed the GPL License and the credits, and have packed the whole program into one file, so you cannot edit individual config files. For ever Dos game you purchase from steam, it comes with its own copy of DosBox.. pretty slack of Gabe Imo.. |

I grabbed the steam-q3 cdkey and chucked it on a normal install because it was pissing me off not being able to use cogs.
