Microsoft are ramping up their HD DVD efforts with word of a new promotion, just announced at Comic-Con International:
Today at Comic-Con International 2007, Microsoft Corp. announced it will lower the price of the popular Xbox 360(TM) HD DVD Player from $199 to $179 ERP (United States only) starting Aug. 1, 2007, and will add five free HD DVD movies for anyone purchasing an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30. In addition, Microsoft further solidified the Xbox 360 as the ultimate high-definition (HD) entertainment platform, with key announcements around the HD DVD launches of "300" from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and "Heroes: Season 1" from Universal Studios.
The press release has more details.

This is obviously a US-only change (for now at least), but it'll be interesting to see how (and if) the Blu-Ray camp decides to respond.

I'm thinking of buying an xbox 360 to replace my ps2 which seems to like to crash constantly now. Are the latest gen of xboxes stable hardware wise? or not? Also I don't ever plan to play over xbox live, is it worth the risk of modding it?

Why the hell are Microsoft announcing this at Comic-con anyway?

They're making a big song and dance over getting lots of comic-based stuff on 360 and the Video Marketplace.

My brother bought one recently when i was living with him and we hooked it up and got system failure straight up. Left it 30 mins and has been fine since as far as i know.

System failures are still happening fairly often apparently.

If you plan on modding a new 360 you can kiss your 3 years warranty goodbye

hasn't the porn industry already settled this on blue ray?

With 5 free HDDVDs it's almost worth getting the drive if you didn't own a 360 just to hook it up to your PC (assuming you lived in america and the titles weren't s***).

if they keep the current price point and do the 5 HD DVD's and they where half decent, then i would get one of the addon drive's asap.

I care more about what Walmart are doing. They're offering both now, but if/when they drop one, they'll big a really big deal.

I don't think porn "chose" HDDVD as such, I think it was more a case of Sony not allowing porn to be published on bluray wasn't it? So they didn't really have an alternative.

Both 300 and Heroes are based on Comics. That in conjunction with the price-drop probably made Comic-Con a convenient place to announce.

Are HDDVDs even available in Australia yet? I know the addon drive for the 360 is, but I don't think I've ever seen an actual HDDVD disc for sale anywhere....
