Nintendo have just announced a joint operation with Telstra which will provide Nintendo DS owners with free WiFi access at Telstra HotSpots:
Nintendo Australia, in conjunction with Telstra, is pleased to announce that Nintendo DS™ users can now enjoy Wi-Fi service to Nintendo DS at over 1,000 Telstra Wireless Hotspot® destinations across Australia. Destinations include McDonald’s Restaurants, Starbucks Cafés, airports, hotels and city hotzones throughout Melbourne and Sydney. Through the agreement with Telstra, Nintendo will offer complimentary access to Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, the wireless gaming service that millions of Nintendo fans around the globe have been connecting to and playing online.
More information will apparently be available soon at www.NintendoWiFi.com.au.

Gimme a HELL YES!

I knew us having a Telstra Hotspot at work was always going to mean more than just free net to play WoW when I work graveyards ;)

Can't wait to give it a run!

You can browse webpages :p
Bah, online multiplayer on portable devices seems like a bit of a silly idea since most people play their DS while travelling, and there aren't any hotspots on buses or trains :/ It's another thing to play with a mate if you are both going somewhere, but you don't need online connectivity for that anyways.

I wonder if the wifi hotspots just treat it as a regular connection. Would be cool if someone found out how it connected and just hacked it to work on a normal laptop.

be interesting, considering on the website it says u just go near the hotspot there is no extra authenticating it apparently just works, so an interesting thought.
IIRC all telstra hot spots use Cisco AP's =], but im confounded as to why they havent boasted the new hotspots and upped the connections to 8mb's or 20mbs where available, since they are all(well 98%) 1500/256 adsl connections, sadness ;(

It works an absolute treat!

I just logged into our hotspot here with my DS & was able to find a mario kart game without any issues at all :)

Yeh, this seems like it must be rife for exploitz. Someone take a packetsniffer and a DS to their local Maccas. You won't look weird or nerdy, promise.

edit: that is probably incitement to commit some sort of fraud under some lame law. For legal purposes, the above comment was a joke and should not be taken seriously. Do not access the internet on a shared wireless connection without the owners permission. Etc.

It's somewhat dumb. Probably about the only really bad thing I could say about the DS really.

Other than the lack of C&C and Warcraft ports on it that is...

you don't have to buy it.

I really wouldn't even bother. Btw, the browser is made by Opera as they are partnered with Nintendo.

They also make the Wii browser (free until July, $5 download after that. The final version of the Wii browser is out sometime this month.
