The official Google blog has announced that Google Maps is now available in a Australian flavour:

The next time you're looking for an address, tiger meat pie in Sydney, cafes in Melbourne, or how to get to the beach, Google Maps can help you find the answer. If you're at your computer, go to http://maps.google.com.au and start searching -- you can type addresses or business searches like [cricket near melbourne] all into the same search box. If you want to access Google Maps on your mobile device, go to http://www.google.com/gmm from your Java- enabled phone or Palm device to get started.

Eerr... this has been working for at least a few months? Maybe now it's just official though.

wow i was just looking at google maps in my area when this was posted

i thought i was actually looking at google earth until i zoomed in and it was just street names and blocks etc.

pretty cool still

apparently they were updating satellite imagery for Aus a few weeks ago. We were down in Sydney and a few parks had all these people spreading out big covers with signage hoping that it's shown on google earth.
