The rumour mill had all but confirmed this one, but now word is official - Electronic Arts today now announcing Tiberium, the next addition to the long running Command and Conquer franchise - in the form of a tactical first person shooter.
Players step into the shoes of Forward Battle Commander Ricardo Vega and will assemble an assortment of elite squads to combat the global crisis. Armed with an arsenal of weapons including a transforming personal weapon system, multi-launch homing missiles, capital ship bombardments and tactical ion cannon strikes, Vega will lead the fight from the front lines.

Featuring a unique blend of first-person shooting and tactical squad combat, players will control multiple infantry, armour, and air squads as the fight escalates. In Tiberium, Vega is the most powerful presence on the battlefield, and the squads are his most decisive weapon. Players can take multi-squad control combat into single-player or bring the action into online multiplayer battles.
The last time the series ventured into FPS territory was with the ill-fated Command and Conquer: Renegade which despite some novel gameplay concepts was marred by bugs and lacklustre netcode. Let's hope they can deliver a more polished product this time around.

A single screenshot was released alongside the announcement. Check out the complete press release for more details.

As always, it sounds cool as s***, but I have absolutely no confidence that EA will pull it off to make it as unique and cool and slick as it should be.

I predict a graphically polished, generic, bug-ridden end product.

PROVE ME WRONG, EA. PROVE ME WRONG.

Renegade was ALMOST really cool; it had a lot of good stuff but was let down by the old EA FPS policy of making schlock and churning it out and letting it rot. I'm hoping that the BF experience will have taught them a thing or two about making decent FPS titles and properly supporting them.

I did enjoy the flame tanks in Renegade. Netcode was balls though.

Renegade was good once the community fixed it up.

Hopefully this won't be standard EA s***...

I had some really fun games of Renegade on lan. Sure it was a flawed game, but there was gold buried in there.

I bought that C&C the first decade thing a while ago and when I saw renegade I was like wtf? I wandered around for about 2 minutes before proclaiming my hatred for it and deleted it.

here's hoping it plays like et:qw

Renegade was an awesome concept, but the game mechanics were never going to provide a decent fps challenge.

watching et:qw top-down makes me think it started as an rts concept, and ended up being a fps later in the creative process.

taking away the commander was good idea imo - we've seen in BF games how such an awesome idea turns to poo in public servers... no one is gonna pay for that unless they're a n00b and it comes free with a pizza
