Despite the apparent best efforts of all parties to delay and confuse the release, the Crysis single player demo has been released and is now available for download locally from AusGamers. The demo weighs in at an impressive 1.9gb; we've got a torrent for it as well if that's how you roll. |

Well, I'm in no hurry for this, so I'll wait for the DX10 one tomorrow. The beta didn't impress me though so I don't have high hopes at this stage. It just seemed like a take off of ET:QW and didn't run nearly as well. .. shrug

I think there are problems with x-fi's in vista yeah there are, you need ALchemy to enable EAX in games that don't support DirectSound inherently and you have to constantly reinstall the drivers after installing some applications (eg Crysis) PS- Reinstalling driver fixed ingame audio not working |

Ok, I just finished the demo and hot diggity damn I'm lovin this s***. Get to hide in the bushes, jump up high throw stuff at people. The only gripe I have is that when you access the suit menu you can use the mouse to select what you want and while that might be handy, I find it f***ing annoying trying to turn around while selecting my suit function and instead of speed end up in the f***en weapon config menu with 30 guys shooting at me.
Also runs fine on my system, I hit the optimal setting button and it said it set everything to high and game runs smooth so all of you out there with higher end systems should be fine with it. Also, unless DX10 adds something really spectacular to the game, screw vista + dx10, looks pretty enough for me under xp with dx9 |

Cheers Lynx!
I hope that they have taken into consideration the POV in multiplayer where DX10 enabled systems are playing against DX9 machines and the level of detail that the DX9's don't draw/see. s***s me to tears when you think that your being a sneaky bastich an according to what your seeing on your screen your hidden in foilage and the DX9'er sees you as standing right out in the open. |

Dx9 and Dx10 users are divided into two different servers groups. Since only Dx10 supports destructible terrain (including trees), weather and day/night cycles in Multilayer; only Dx10 owners can play on Dx10 servers. Though they can join Dx9 servers if they wish.

The thing that amazes me the most about the difference between DX9 high and DX10 high is the shader they've used on those rocks on the ground. Holy f***ing awesomeness batman.

Since only Dx10 supports destructible terrain (including trees) Why is this a multiplayer constraint? I've had trees cut in half in front of me in the SP demo on DX9. Or is the DX10 destruction different? last edited by parabol at 23:50:34 27/Oct/07 |

I'm making wild guesses here, but maybe tree destruction is different under DX10, maybe the mesh of the tree is actually destroyed/deformed in real time, whereas under DX9 trees just play a "I'm getting destroyed now" animation when they get shot.
I really got no idea having not played the game in multiplayer OR single player, but something like that might make sense, maybe. |

Due to the strong hardware available with DX10, server load is less and performance is increased. I still don't understand. How can server load be less? A dedicated server doesn't have to render anything and hence shouldn't need a DX10 card? |

They probably don't mean dedicated server - they're probably talking about a listen server (ie, a server on which the game is running at the same time).

Most probably. Dedicated server optimisation and design is still a sadly under-resourced part of most game software these days.
Back before Far Cry came out (Nov 2003, IIRC), I interviewed Cevat Yerli, one of the head dudes from Crytek - I asked him specifically about dedicated servers (I have the interview recorded somewhere but can't find it atm). He paused and said "we haven't even thought about that". Sadly, Far Cry launched with woeful (I think non-existant) dedicated server support, and thus never really achieved the critical mass necessary for it to really take off online. A few patches later and it actually had quite decent server software - but by then it had missed its window. If it doesn't have it at ship time when most people are playing it and more people are likely to try it out online, it's pretty hard to recapture that momentum further down the track. |

The problem is - or was - that it's only important to a small part of the community. Most people will happily go out and buy a game without even the most cursory investigation as to whether or not it has decent multiplayer support. This is something I've seen again and again and again and it's sort of depressing. It's getting slightly better, but people get so caught up in the hype of a game before it's released that as soon as it's out, they have to have it - almost regardless of the quality of the details.

Parallax mapping is win. If it was just parallax mapping, I don't see why it wouldn't be in the DX9 version as well, unless they're just arbitrarily leaving stuff out of the DX9 version because the assumption is people who can run the DX10 version must have better rigs anyway and can handle more intense stuff. But you're right, it does actually look more like an implementation of steep parallax, I was kinda hoping it was an example of these much vaunted geometry shaders that are part of DX10, I wanna see those in action. |

As for people having trouble getting it, I used flashget and set the retry to 300s. It timed out a whole bunch of times but GA being awesome and letting me resume I didn't have to waste any ziggybytes (not that it's wasted anyway). |

So I've played it though a few times now, once with 163.7 Nvidia drivers and a couple of times with the new beta drivers designed for the Crysis demo. Makes a fair bit of difference to the fps rate. The main difference is the lack of graphical anomalies I was getting with distant objects on the old drivers.
AI is amazing, much better than I have played on any other FPS. Cloak mode is so powerful for confusing the AI, it feels like a cheat. Need to play delta difficulty. The AI's perception of what is around them is flawless so far. I haven't had any npcs get stuck on terrain or objects. That being said I haven't got destructible buildings on. Their vision feels very realistic, you can stand right behind them and even to the side a bit and they cant see you. Neither can they see you though bushes you cant see through. When hiding behind a rock or sniping from an unseen location, the AI won't instantly know your location. Instead they take cover and scan the area around them occasionally crawling around to get a better view. On two occasions in the middle of fire fights, I've had an npc or two clear of down the road to pick up a jeep at the previous outpost, and drive it back to the action, guns blazing. If you dart into the scrub while being pursued, they will stand back and fire wildly after you and if you cloak after they have seen you the AI will spray bullets on your last visible location. It feels great to double back around them with cloak before choaking and hurling them around. The Suit brings a lot to the game and I'm still finding new uses for it. Like much improved accuracy in strength mode and the faster punches with speed mode. Strength and speed still feel under used. You'll spend +90% of the time in Armor/Cloak mode. Still, there are times when the AI feels a little stiff. They react poorly to sound, like footsteps or objects you may have bumped. Silenced shots while almost as loud as non silenced shots, seem to be completely ignored by the AI even if fired right next to them. Rather they react to the bullets that pass by them. On to the benchmarks... 3.2Ghz P4 1Gb 6800GT Settings at minimum GPU Play Time: 50.21s, Average FPS: 39.83 Min FPS: 24.29 at frame 1956, Max FPS: 60.70 at frame 97 CPU Play Time: 30.36s, Average FPS: 49.41 Min FPS: 27.39 at frame 196, Max FPS: 58.75 at frame 1438 Edit: Nice little addition I've found, if you shot barrels of oil they will leak until the oil level drops to the hole. Shot it again at a higher point and no oil will leak out. Shot it once more at a lower level and oil will again pour out until the oil level reaches the hole. The AI's perception of what is around them is flawless so far. I haven't had any npcs get stuck on terrain or objects. I got stuck inside a rock near that big chinese truck thing you have to get inside of and download some data. The AI may not get stuck in stuff, but I sure as hell found a way :( |

You people with your meaningless alliances to one platform over another are losers.
And here you go Khel, here are some more detailed comparisons between DX9 and DX10. There certainly is a difference. http://www.deezygn.com/images/external/crysis-comparison/index.html |

It really just looks like DX10 has better lighting, better self shadowing on stuff, and some extra detail here and there in the distance (maybe just clever use of imposters?). I'm not sure any of that is really DX10 specific though (maybe the lighting? dunno), or if they're just limiting features on DX9 systems because they're using "does the user have a DX10 compatible video card" as a benchmark for how powerful the system is and what it can handle.
Anyone got some pictures of this destroyable/deformable terrain that was mentioned? |

Well, I see a pretty significant increase in the water effects and the draw distance, along with the lighting...

Yeah, I moused over the pics, but the draw distance looks the same to me, its just the DX10 one seems to have some imposters thrown in or something on the far distant bits. And the water doesn't look that different, bit more detail on the surface but not THAT different. Its still rippling in both, its still shiny and see through in both, just seems to be a bit more noise or texture or something on it in the DX10 screenshot.
I'm not denying the DX10 one looks better, it totally looks better, I'm just not sure any of the reasons it looks better are because of DX10 magic or if they just chose DX10 as the arbitrary cutoff point between high detail and ultra high detail, I reckon you could do most of that with DX9 if you had a beefy system, but yeah, gotta sell copies of Vista somehow I spose. last edited by Khel at 13:38:14 29/Oct/07 |

I would be guessing that if you can do this without a DX10 card, then the 'Very High' settings aren't actually using DX10.
I also assume that this hack wouldn't enable the crazy GPU physics or whatever it is that DX10 enables. |

I'm not sure any of that is really DX10 specific though At the very least, the sunlight shafts (screenshot from previously pasted link)are arbitrarily disabled for DX9. Can re-enable it with info from this link: http://blogs.nofrag.com/Scrapy/#article32013 |

so if you are running vista and a dx10 card are you seeing all the dx10 features on that demo? (if its on very high) - there was talk before about a dx9 version demo and a dx10 one or are they the same thing?

I just did that dx10 feature hack thing where you copy all the stuff around in the configs and hot damn does it ever look pretty. Still mostly playable too, fps goes down in certain spots but I don't know if that's because my card isn't quite up to snuff or because I'm only using dx9.

Wow.
I just played the Demo and was impressed with the graphics and gameplay. Then I shot down a tree. Even better. A little later I was driving a jeep, I saw a rock jump and thought, 'wooo I'll jump the jeep onto the building and drive right past them all' As you do in games... Turns out the tin building was no match for my American Steel jeep and it collapsed as soon as I landed on it..It was a very joyous moment. I will buy this game. |

I found it to be really easy. I played on Delta mode first up. I found that the AI didn't really hear me walking around much.
I've been playing with the sandbox editor, that is kinda neat. |

wasnt going to download this as i expected it to run like s*** through mud. to my surprise though at 1440x900 on medium everything it runs around 25fps give or take which let me really enjoy it. i loved messing with the AI. shoot 1 guy and let them see me, then cloak and run into a bush only to circle around them and bash them with power mode. also anyone try punching the chickens with power mode active? sometimes they just go shooting off into the distance like a stray missle

I found it to be really easy. I played on Delta mode first up. I found that the AI didn't really hear me walking around much. Some of it is dumb, some of it isn't. I was hiding inside a shrub (as you do) behind a rock and somehow the dude out in the boat managed to spot me and started shooting me in the head, yet the guys on the land wandering about like chickens looking for food didn't notice me one iota. But yes, even on delta if you're sneaky with the cloak and stick to hiding in amongst the trees/bushes you're basically indestructible because of the healing power of the suit, however if you simply run out into the middle of them all you'll get your arse handed to you on a silver platter. |

Try leaving AA off. I don't really notice much of a difference with AA on or off quality wise. Looks good enough to me with it off.

EDIT: ok do this, install the editor and run, open the island.cry level, and pick a nice place to put the Nuke tank.I followed instructions care of narby on SA (who is a mapper at crytek) which involved: View > database something or other > open file: vehicles.xml > drag in the entry for something like [asian-tank-wtac] which pops up the tank placement location thing, move it around and drop it in. ctrl+g = playball. The editor is god damn amazing... I get better FPS @ max settings (the fake DX10 hack stuff) in the editor than in game :P The other awesome thing about the editor is in.. mission > edit something like [gear for player or some s*** like that :P] then from the drop down box "player_island_full" Lets you add in stuff like gauss gun, sniper rifle, law + more attatchments for the scar, more ammo/grenades Had more fun f***ing around in the editor than playing the game :P Does the nuke deform the terrain?f*** no, it doesnt even knock down most trees from what ive seen. I dont think physics for it are in the demo... given what it can do: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gLwh9S0jtak last edited by qmass at 22:22:55 30/Oct/07 |

Does the nuke deform the terrain? Only in dx10 mode, although I'm fairly certain that hasn't been added yet in the demo, considering most of the stuff that actually deforms terrain wasn't meant to be used in the demo. |

that nuke stuff is awesome, the editor is the best i've ever seen.. theres a bunch of youtube vids featuring other kinds of nukes in the closed beta.. very cool.
im blown away by every aspect of the demo, the graphics, the feel of everything, and especially the sound, so realistic.. playing through a dolby 7.1 setup, when you get on those boats and head out towards the frigates and they fire heatseakers at you, the sound makes you just about s*** your pants.. the helicopters feel awesome. last edited by autolux at 11:57:36 31/Oct/07 |

The intro part was the shizzle.Try 340 actually. New Nvidia card (8800GT) absolutely rapes for a mid-range card. Its faster than the more expensive 8800GTS even though it has less memory and clock speed. Its almost on par with the GTX up to the high resolutions where the GTX pulls away: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3140&p=9 Was thinking how f***ed it was going to be, needing a really nice card to play this game the way it should be played but damn, thats a nice card for the cost. The really crazy s*** is that apparently the new top end nvidia cards are two times as fast as the 8800GTX... that is just insane. Supposedly the new GTS will be out this month, presumably faster than the GT. last edited by qmass at 15:07:17 31/Oct/07 |

It's still expensive to shell out to buy a game.
Add the cost of the game, probably $99, and you're up for $440. Makes consoles seem more attractive. |

Makes consoles seem more attractive. Add the costs of an addon keyboard and mouse for a true gaming experience on a console, and you might as well stick to the PC. |

^^ It's still only a "once off" cost though. Buy the console for $600, keyboard + mouse for what? $100? I dunno and you're set until the next gen of consoles comes out.
Buy a PC and you're up for at least $1k for a decent rig to play current games, then a few months down the line you're up for another $300 for a new video card, few months later $400 for another CPU, $150 for more RAM. So in the long run a PC would probably end up being more expensive than a console. I reckon I've probably spent about $6k on PC stuff in the same time I've spent maybe $1200 on consoles (ps2 -> xbox360). |

Makes consoles seem more attractive. Not really, when's Crysis coming out on a console? what's it gonna look like? How will you use the bazillion mods sure to made by fans around the world? |

I don't even have a console but you can be sure that another new game will come out in 6 months and you'll need to upgrade the video card, again, to see it in all its glory.
I prefer PC's for gaming, it's just annoying when the parts get out dated so quickly. |

well so do I, but there are people out there and even some on here who will go out and buy the latest video card when it comes out sort of like the console fanboys who go out and buy every console under the sun. massive HD plasma screen to play it on, surround sound, high quality controlers, modchipped, subscription fees to online services, etc. the prices are compariable for enthusiests on both sides of the fence. i spent about 1.5 grand on my rig last year (all up) thats $500 for speekers. $450 for vid card. $400 for monitor. rest on misc, and i can play UT3 Demo with all the settings on max hosting a server full of bots with 16xAF on 1680x1050 at ~30 fps. I feel no need to upgrade any time soon. (maybe next year?) considering a PS3 costs $1000 by its self (without the HD screen). i have no problem with how much i spent on the system. |

You only upgrade to a new console every 5 or 6 years though.
And I don't see why you'd repeatedly buy new HD screens either. I don't think you can really argue that console gaming costs as much as PC gaming. |

You only upgrade to a new console every 5 or 6 years though. As mentioned, a good number of people own all the major consoles. That's quite a lot of $$$ right there for every new generation, plus any hardware addons that they buy. Then add the cost of mod-chipping that many people do to get the machines to act like a media PC or play other region media. I don't think you can really argue that console gaming costs as much as PC gaming. I find my console friends spend about as much as me. I buy a $1500 PC every 3 years and a $350 graphics upgrade and maybe a hard-drive once in between. That's roughly the same price as a PS3, 360 and Wii which I know many people simultaneously own. I don't really care too much, as I don't find console games that interesting anyway. I get bored easily as I can't play around with the settings, engine, nor mods. Our household Wii is sitting there gathering dust. Lately I haven't even been playing PC games, except when the Crysis demo came out ... last edited by parabol at 14:22:56 06/Nov/07 |

Fair enough, but I would wager that there are far far fewer people out there with more than one current generation console than you argue.
And you're also comparing the purchase of one PC to 3 separate games consoles, which is quite a bit more hardware. I consider myself no more a console fan than I am a PC fan, but I think it's pretty obvious that 3 consoles is going to make a f***load more games available to you than one PC, which, as you stated, probably wont cost any more money. |
