There have been rumours, but it's now confirmed - AMD are buying ATI:
Advanced Micro Devices Inc, the No. 2 supplier of computer processors, said on Monday it would acquire graphics chip maker ATI Technologies Inc. for $5.4 billion in cash and stock to expand its product mix and grow market share as it battles Intel Corp.

that seems to be a big gamble? from what the article said the bulk of the money used for the purchase would be from a loan so hopefully amd wont go under?

i would have prefered they bought nvidia, but oh well, more competition for nvidia (hopefully amd will get ati right) means cheaper prices for us all

I don't like the sound of this... Sounds like people are going to be taking sides. And companies are going to be taking sides. Hello incompatibility issues.

The deal is not meant to be related to GPU's (ie. AMD aren't interested in competing with nVidia)

More likely is that they will push to get their onboard hyper-transport-card style thing happening and use some of ATI's technologies in their processors...

ie. Ring Bus Memory Controller

Also, ATI get the use of AMD's manufacturing facilities... (65 nanometre video cards perhaps in the near future)

oh, and another related rumor I heard is that Intel will be re-entering the 3d graphics market very soon...

Yes, and they don't like you.

I run an AMD Processor on an NVidia Chipset with an ATI Video Card. Works sweet.
