The Quake 4 v1.1 patch is now out of beta and is now available for download locally from AusGamers. id Software are making a valiant effort to try to resurrect the brand's multiplayer reputation after it was Ravenated, and have gone as far as to hire a new community liaison to work with the hardcore crowd to try and keep the game alive.
Such improvements include: a fixed pure server system, a new AddonPak autodownloading system, voice chat in multiplayer, a forcemodel option, brightskins, smooth stair-jumping, a one-minute warning for tournament matches, Hyper-Threading Technology and Dual Core support as well as a ton of multiplayer specific fixes which have been requested by the community and discovered during our own gameplay.
There are also four new maps, so all in all it is a pretty big update. If you've shelved Quake 4 it might be worth a dust-off to see how it fares now.

UPDATE: id have requested the file be taken down - there is a potential problem that could damange your monitor:
"There is a problem with the widescreen functionality that may harm a user's monitor. We are working on a re-release and will make it available as soon as possible. Please advise your viewers that may be using the current 1.1 beta and/or final to NOT enable widescreen or disable widescreen if they are currently using it."
Our mirror is disabled with this warning until a new version is released.

I suspect a lot of these new features are making their way into the engine in preparation for ET:QW, so I'm tempted to give them a crack.

I really don't like the autodownloading system much; it is quite painful from a server admin perspective. The old Q3/ET system is much better.

Anyone tried the voice chat? How's it compare to using like Ventrilo or Teamspeak?

Alot of these 'features' are essentially what was missing from the release of the game. All of it (or the majority) should have been released with the game and this is iD fixing (patching derr) it up. The initial release of quake4 was a joke and killed the community as there was actually alot of people playing at initial release of the game but then bugs and everything else let people down.

I dont use voice chat at all and have only ever used it for quake3 ctf games but I somehow dont see it being used in quake4 well not by me anyway.

All the information we got is in the news post - this came as a press release from id Software's PR agency so I took it pretty seriously and I advise you guys to as well!

Hmm, I just re-read the press release and it states "current 1.1 beta and/or final". Now i've had the 1.1 beta installed since it was released as well as using a widescreen setting and I personally havent had any problems. Though yeah trog, it must be serious for them to decide to recall an update.

Yeh I suspect it is probably more of a potential problem rather than one that has cut a swathe of destruction through the widescreen monitor using community. I hope they release some more info, I'm keen to find out what is going on.

i'm guessing that it must dodgily try & force a refresh rate... that's the only way i can think that software could damage a monitor.

true that. the map is still heavily over-rated by said n00bs! railguns killed the duel. ;D

sadly - I haveto agree to a point. Q4's railgun is grossly underpowered. Thank gawd for Instagib mods ;)

must be almost time for a regeneration clan ctf reunion eh Term!? EH!? ;D
the guys at my work usually play q3a ctf after work for a quick fps bash & goddam it gets boring!@#! once i talked them into playing quakectf but they can't get used to the frantic nature of the game. :[
but the last time i played quakectf with warhammer, dethon & exile... 4 maps of intense 2v2 ctf & i was mentally exuasted & had to go for a walk around the block to calm down :P~~

If by 'bad reviews' you mean 'rabid ravings of people that thought they were buying a multiplayer game' or 'lunatic ramblings of people that didn't understand that the flashlight was a gameplay device', then fair enough. If you mean 'real' reviews though, Gamerankings.com gives Doom 3 an average rating of 87.4% (and a user rating of 8.2, which is more than I would have expected).

Quake 4 though is a different game completely so I don't think you should judge it by another game which is basically totally different except for the engine. I was actually quite surprised by how much I enjoyed Q4 single player - I don't normally enjoy SP games any more at all these days but it was quite a fun mindless shooter.

I played multiplayer for about 10 minutes before I decided I didn't like it; it was just too chunky compared to the lushness of Quake 3. It shipped with too many game modes, too - they should have picked ONE CTF and stuck with it instead of dividing it up - it just meant more people spread over more game types.

but the life in a game is derived from its multiplayer...

No arguments here; I wouldn't have bought either Doom 3 or Quake 4 for its multiplayer. Or Battlefield 2.
