EA have sent through the formal announcement of Battlefield 2142, as well as a few tasty screenshots.
The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth's population. Some will live, most will die. In Battlefield 2142, players will choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field.

Looks total arse compared to ET:Quake Wars shots. But then again they have a huge fan base and there is nothing like hitting the ol cash cow again and again...

:P

The buildings and streets reminds me of Syndicate.

I can't say the screenshots or trailer look special in any way, especially when you look at them side-by-side with high-quality ET:QW pics.

I think the urban/city environments look sort of cool, different to ET:QW. I'm reluctant to believe this will be anything other than a typical EA release (ie, not really release quality until after about a year of patches).

I'm concerned about ET:QW's engine though; its untested for that sort of game and after battling Quake 4 for various things in some of our servers I'm a little worried about it. They're going to have to really put in some hard yards in the server software to catch up to the Battlefield engine. Not only that but Activision/id have this bad habit of not releasing free dedicated server software which generally means a dearth of servers at release time :(

one thing that i'm annoyed at is the mechs that are going to be in it. I'm sick of this BS, if i wanted to have a mech war i'd play mechwarrior. I reckon it will be a flop, it's probably just using the bf2 engine.

It is using a modified BF2 engine by all reports.

Like Battlefield Vietnam used a 'modified' BF1942 engine, I suspect (that is, it was an older engine version than the current version of BF1942 when it was released, with a few extra features to allow for some of the gameplay improvements).

Looks remarkably like that C&C Fps game... Big ugly buildings taking up unecessary space but with stupid chokepoint tunnels in an attempt to make infantry classes 'useable' in an urban tank driven shooter game (apart from the fact the game had the absolutely best netcode of any game ever hehehe, lan server 4000ms ping? Its playable!)

I used to be part of a Quake 3 mod team that got 75% into completing a Syndicate Wars Total Conversion.

Unfortunately the lead coder couldn't code for s*** (mixing logical && with bitwise &, etc) and many of the other members got pulled to another project and the mod was scrapped :(

I managed to find some deleted content through archive.org. Check out all of the screenshots here

Here's a sample:
