Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii, the last two of the next generation consoles to make it out (except for the Phantom, of course), have finally made their way out in the US. News from the Internets (including Penny Arcade seems to indicate the PlayStation 3 is a little harder to find due to production shortages, with the Wii being much more readily available.

There are jillions of sites with coverage but it looks like initial feedback of the Wii is pretty good (with a few notable exceptions).

ps3 is harder to find because they probably sold out of them in the first hour.

updated item - apparently ps3 is harder to find because they made less of them

Neither are easy to find as both sold out of their initial shipments nation-wide.

Wii had a significantly higher production so has obviously shifted more units than the PS3 at this point in time.

I think Sony should have just delayed until next year so they actually had a reasonable number of systems available. I was reading that they only had 200k-400k available for the US launch which is pathetic.

Oh yeah, and both are pretty much sold out now. The Wii has sold more obviously because they had more systems. I also heard that Zelda has about an 80% attach rate to systems.

Here's a couple of articles that give a bit better idea :

Nintendo Wii got off to a flyer yesterday with major retailers reporting sell-outs. Although Nintendo has not released official figures, day one sell-through should be at well over a million.

and

Lazard Capital Markets has forecasted that the U.S. may receive a scant 150K-200K PS3s on the console's November 17 launch day.
ImageIn a note to investors, Lazard analyst Colin Sebastian cited retail checks as the source for the figures.

both consoles sold out so dunno how it rained wii. i think a lot of ppl are going to be disappointed with wii thinking that it will have graphics as good as 360 and ps3 when they are only as good as a gc.

I think most people are looking at the fun side of the wii rather than playing the same old s*** just prettier.

Having played the wii at work over the last two days, its probably the only console I would consider buying (until the 360 has a XBMC dash:D)

So much fun to play tennis and baseball. The axis controller is just fantastic

Not sure if this is "the phantom" mentioned above but this is a link to infinium's website:

www.phantom.net
or
http://www.infiniumlabs.com/content/products/gamingService.html

doesnt sound like much information about a console except some sort of lapbaord for pc/mac and a game service... My guess is that it will be subscription style(on demand) broadband gaming which i think all games will be hosted over the internet or something and you by the console to interact with the game (why hasnt foxtel come up with something like this yet?!) if it takes off it might just be the end of pc's and consoles

Yep, that's the phantom I was talking about. Check hardocp for some good backstories about it and it's perpetual vapourware status. It's a great story of how to fleece investors.

Tobal No 1. It was the best fighting game ever until they released Tobal No 2.

TRU deal you get to choose between Open Season and Need for speed carbon. This deal is not available anymore though.

Only the Zelda one:
Zelda deal is new and is 730 for console, bag, extra wiimote, 4 games and zelda for free (5 games total, 6 if you include the wii sports pack in)

there is a lot of controversy over it (the first deal) because people thought (myself included) it would be a game of our choice since thats what stores said.

what they did was misleading, theres an 82 page thread about the issue over at the aussie-nintendo.com forums if you want to read more about it.

You're getting a next-gen console at launch, with 2 games for $400 and you're complaining?

Oh please.. it's about as "next-gen" as this was at the time in the hardware stakes:

Also, Americans are paying $250 USD for it which at current exchange rates is about $330 AUD, yet we're paying $400. The Wii is pretty much straight out overpriced.

All that said, I'll still be getting one at launch.

When i played the Wii at e-games, the motion sensor in the tennis game felt a little sluggish to be honest...

You can change the sensitivity of the wii-mote.

You forget about factoring in import costs and shipping, which then makes it work out to be around $400AUD.

and remember, that is the US price before tax is added, which adds quite a bit more that they have to pay. Of course they are going to round up here.

At least its not as bad as NZ, the Wii is 500 there and 100 for the full control (wiimote and nunchuk). That price is higher than a core 360 :S

If you're a myer one member (membership is free) you can get GT Pro Series for free with preorder as well as the vouchers. Although from what i've read that game sucks nuts. https://www.myerone.com.au/myerone/downloads/Wii-voucher-final.pdf

Yeah it's actually a gamecube game that was released only in japan originally, ported to wii controls. A f***ing horrible looking gamecube game at that. But hey.. maybe i can get something from EB for it haha.

I'm getting my Wii from EB Indro at the midnight launch - I'm getting Zelda then too. Then the next day I'll go and grab the rest of my games from JB for $80 a pop.

The only reason I buy from EB is because of the return policy. My X360 broke down about 2 days after launch - I just took it into EB and they replaced it for me...I'm not sure if I had gotten my console from JB or Kmart they would have been so willing to exchange like that.

Also...midnight launch!

i bought my xbox360 from kmart, and their return policy is 12 months in store iirc.

games i will almost always buy from EB due to the pre-owned setup. I got WC06 for 60 bucks (minus 10 percent as well for getting some pre-owned VIP card or some bs) instead of 100.
