Just so you know, Google has launched an instant-messaging (IM) program that allows text chat and computer-to-computer voice connections. You can download Google Talk here. Google also provide detailed instructions on using other IM clients to connect to Google Talk such as Trilian, GAIM, etc. promoted news post

It's not much more than a jabber client.

As someone on slashdot said, yet another account on GAIM without any contacts.

I wonder if Google will store much information from messenger users - like conversations.

Just after reading up on this here i was amazed to see it made the 5 o'clock news (ten). They said Google having a large base that the user base of this would grow very fast giving many people cheaper phone bills.

They have a pretty good knack for findind out exactly what most people want
And they're already right on the money for me. When they get to adding sleek & sexy groups, I'll be theirs forever.

a google-flavoured firefox browser sounds good (am i making things up?). I -want- them to take over my desktop.

can't see it getting much of the mainstream market though, until they start adding more features found in MSN etc. But I know google won't do it at the expense of interface/usability, and for that they have my full respect.

edit: it was on the news? haha. haven't seen that before

Skype rules. I love it. :) 2-3 cent flat rate minute to like 20 different countries. Lots of apps can do PC to PC talk. But Skype does PC - Landline phone & mobiles too. Very good.

Apparently Google plans to do PC -> Mobiles for *free*. That'll make a lot of people stand up and pay attention. Also Farseeker, you now have my full respect as you put my thoughts into words. A Google-powered desktop appeals to me as they do indeed prioritise for interface/usability.

Gmail is so simple and yet powerful, now Google Talk is the same, with many features yet to be added. Unfortunately I won't recommend it to my more lazy/non-educated friends as they're the sort to stick to MSN because everyone's on it and it's easy.

Once Google Talk and Firefox (I know it's not relevant but it fits in the same vein) start allowing incremental updates rather than having to download the whole thing again, then I'll recommend them to my mates and I'm sure they'l take off :)

Someone install a flux capacitor in a de Lorean so I can go back in time and buy shares in Google (err... were they any cheaper when they first hit the market?).

I see Skype in the latest update now allows you to call up to four people at once. That's pretty cool. :)

Don't think i'd manage talking to that many at once myself tho. lol.

they tried to float at $200, but were told they were over valuing themselves and would have a negative response. I don't think the people that did their ipo are still on the payroll...

Pity the client will only add friends using with a google account.

With gaim and other multi-protocol clients, is it possible to add other jabber accounts, or use something like an msn transport ?

That's why you send them an invite to join GMail and add a link to GTalk. (hopefully) In one swoop they move away from hotmail and MSN and join the better half of the internet.

I've uninstalled MSN and have started using Google Talk. It's quick, simlpe and clean - everything MSN isn't. On top of that, it's VoIP calls are of much higher quality than Skype... clearer and have absolutely no delay - it was as perfect as a landline call. I already have 20+ friends on my list, and that continues to get bigger.
That's basically enough of a good review to make me install it and start using it. Clean and nice and good quality and simple is all I want from an IM.

...now, to convince all the newbs on my MSN list to start using it!

It can be changed. All you need to do is change your first and last name in your preferences.

Yeah, crisp and clean are perfect discriptions for gtalk. Plus it gives you a small snippet of incoming emails you receive in gmail.

Can you do group calls with google talk? I had a quick look but couldn't see the option.

Nah, not yet. There are a whole lot of options that need to be added yet, but they'll come in due time.

....ergghhhh don't know what all the anti msn fuss is about?

i use my gmail in msn (just created a gmail passport)....msn..runs fine, i've got no ad's or unwanted rubbish thanks to a little patch (www.mess.be) and it's never crashed.

i'll use google talk when it proves better quality...but for now...no need to shift

Yeah me too. MSN works fine with the patch

then again, practically the only reason to not switch is that other people are still using the other im services. Though some features still aren't in gtalk i guess, for camwhores and such
