The Australian Vivendi office wasn't able to hook us up with the demo in advance, so it is a bit delayed, but like an old man eating Viagra pancakes, we've got it up now - the single player demo of the upcoming horror shooter, F.E.A.R. Download it now locally from AusGamers. If you dare!

Update: Probably should have read "if you can"; between the massive Dungeon Siege 2 demo and this we're choking up our phat Comindico pipe. If you're having problems try the GameArena link on our page, or join FileRush's torrent.

Just finished the demo. Graphics are awesome and the weapons are damn cool too! I love the feel of them as you shoot the crap outta the enemy. They sound real chunky and ass-kickin'. I found out pretty quick that you can't just run in and blow the s*** outta everything or else you end up getting hammered and the enemy AI seems pretty good as well. Soldiers duck outta the way and dive thru windows and stuff.

But in saying that, I don't think I'd go out and spend money on it, I reckon I'd get bored of it too quickly. Sorta reminded me of Doom 3. Also, I hate how torches have like a power meter thingy. Just leave it so you can have it on forever damn-it!!

Havnt finished the demo yet, im not really getting into it, but from what ive seen its like a scary doom3. Similar graphics (though more minimalistic) nice lighting and texture effects. The guns do seem chunky and the bullet hole effects have obviously had alot of time put into them :P Seems to be quite well made, the in game cut scene action was very well done...

I doubt id buy it but I guess I might play it for free, I dont get into these 'horror' games as much as good old action FPS' like HL2.

phwoar i got a few frights from that. especially when u turn to go down a ladder and bam the girl is there. then straight afer u get off the ladder and turn that guy is there. freaky game. i need a new graphics card though, the settings had to be so low to play this.

I just played it, looks awesome & plays ok even on my 4200, didn't look at what everything's set to though I just hit auto detect. I guess because i'm playing it during the day I didn't get that much of a fright from that girl/guy on the ladder like you ravn0s. I bet playing this thing in the middle of the night with all the lights turned off would freak me out though. Definately going to have to buy this, I was just like HOLY s*** I"M GONNA DIE, then the demo ended and I was like :(

One question though, why does a single player demo want to connect to the internet? I noticed it trying to get out when I started it up. Some kind of statistical analysis?

edit: demo is 1.08Gb? there's hardly anything to it wtf would it be so big? damn huge textures I imagine

i've had that too lately, but they just come up with the licence agreement screen, then it skips it, because it's already installed.

i liked this game. graphics looked nice, but to be honest, the game did feel a little unpolished, which is to be expected for a pre-release demo. and the inability to run it at 1280x1024 s***s me, 1152x864? wtf? don't they know people run 17 and 19" LCDs which are native to 1280?

all in all, looks very nice at highest detail. though it does slow down and chunk sometimes for no reason. as in, i'll be walking, and it'll drop the fps sooo low, then it goes away. but if i step back onto that area, it'll do it again, just in certain spots.

though, i did like this game. very cool atmosphere

the slow-mo bullet time f***ing rocks. max payne w00t

wow... just... wow. that was crazy. this is deffinatly looking to be 1 good game. finaly a game with awesome ai that kicked my ass over and over. when you come into the room with the 2 grenades and the 4 or 5 men, i must of played that over 10 times to clear because i kept dying (on hard). i had 1 guy lean over the little wall i was hiding under and shoot me, another hid behind a bookshelf thing and when it was knocked down with a grenade another guy crawled under it to get me, another time they bounced a grenade off a pillar to kill me. its a shame the demo is short and the file size is so high but deffinatly worth it

Played it and finished it at irhabi's last night with suhaib, and noted the following:

- Awesome graphics
- Awesome sound
- Awesome gameplay

- I shat my pants a few times with the ghost images

- Bullet time rocks so hard

- The plasma gun in slow mo rocks very very hard.

- Love the matrixy nade effects after they've exploded

- AI is friqqin smart and you cant simply run in gun blazing. They'll roll outta windows, run away, camp, lean against walls, call for backup etc etc and the way they're animated when they're shot in certain body parts is brilliant.

- The lighting is mad. Seeing the shadow of myself on walls ahead of you made me waste my clip into a wall thinking it was an enemy.

- Bullet holes look sweet as, although a lil too big for a glock. Felt a lil disappointed that the demo finished a lil early cause we really got into it. Also hopefully there'll be plot twists and different elements involved to enhance the gameplay.

So far it's brilliant. It seems like it's the way Doom 3 should've been made.

I dunno what the deal is but Ive read something about needing proper drivers for intro movies.

I have no idea if this has anything to do with your problems but its worth a shot. If you dont already have 'defiler' codec pack installed then remove all codecs you have now and install it.

LOL you all suck.. I downloaded it and it rocks.. I love this game.. I hated Doom3 and I get so bored with many of the other games.. The AI is great.. The slow motion thing is realy cool.. Reminds me of the pill in Max Payne.. They dont make you wait for all the nice juicy weapons either.. If you have little to no patience with games like Halflife 2 that make you walk half the level waiting for a new weapon and just like to shoot s*** up, this is the right game for you.. I got to the end of the demo and I want more.. Can't wait for this to come out.. Scares the s*** outta ya with the lights off and the sound up..

PS: I'm running it on a Leadtek 6600GT with P4 2.53GHZ 1GB ram.. Ran first time without any problems.

i tried to do a melee only run and did'nt get very far lol. i made it past the 1st 2 guys then got hammered by the next 5.

- left and right click is the simple 3 hit punch combo, nothing special
- holding right click and jumping is the jumping roundhouse (try in slowmo, very matrixy)
- running foward and pushing crouch and right click at the same time is the sliding kick which seems to really pack a punch. i tried this on 1 guy and shot him back into a coke machine.

i roundhouse'ed a guy over a baracade and it all happened so well. another thing i've seen, unless your using that nail gun thing, bodies dont ragdoll positions yoga masters would be proud of. you never see something like a foot going through someones head while they are laying face down on the ground. seems they limited the angles that a body could fall. brilliant.

I liked it, looks like Monolith have a another big title on their hands. I thought the engine was very much like the one used for 'Riddick' and that rocked. I also like the way Monolith build the scare level with subtle effects, lighting and such, especially the 'glimpes' of the i suppose ghost is only way to describe them..well done indeed and it runs very well at maximum everything on my machine. Liked the particle weapon too. :)

Yeah its the one alright.

Special mention must also be made of Trespasser's unique health meter. Instead of offering a numerical reading in the corner of the screen, or your standard green and red health bar, Anne's well being is measured using her heart tattoo. When a level begins, and our heroine is in full health, the heart is nothing but a black outline; as she progresses and gets wounded, by getting bitten by a dinosaur or falling from a high place, the heart fills in with red, until it eventually bursts and Anne is lying dead on the jungle floor. While this original method of measuring your life force is pretty cool, the placement of the tattoo is just plain silly. You see, the tattoo is located right above Anne's left breast, forcing the player to gaze down and ogle at her ample bosom just to see how close she is to the grave. For Tomb Raider junkies who get their jollies drooling over Lara Croft's boobs this may be acceptable, but frankly I think it's pretty moronic.

I had massive texture problems making this game unplayable. Entire walls turned bright white or cyan unless I was looking at them from odd angles. Even on the lowest resolution.

I had a few graphical issues with this demo aswell, i did that "recommend best settings" option or what ever it was, it recommended medium. Watched the intro movie blah blah, then it started to load the game, took about 2min, then an error came up saying "kicked from server" :S so i tried again, same happend. Then i just fiddled with some of the graphics options and it worked fine :)

Well the engine must like Nvidia cards, I run a 3ghz machine with a gig of 1066 rdram and a Asus 6800 ultra and it detected the machnine as 'high end' and automatically set everything to 'maximum' I added some AA and it ran beautifully with only slight texture loading as you came round corners. One can only imagine how great it would run with one of the new 7800GTX cards.

i didnt bother changing the controls to suit myself, but i did end up using the health packs instead of the torch, as Z is sprint in BF2, and crouch is shift(aim in this game). Damn bf2 changed my life, might ahve to go back too WoW.

Frankly I thought it was very avarage! It borrows very heavily from lots of other games, ie bullet time, the dream sequence from max pain, all the things everyone else said and more. As for the guns, PA! The pistol was nice but the sub machine guns/asault rifels sucked, they just didn't real right, I don't think they were finnished. The scenes felt unfinnished, like what doom3 would be like if it didn't have stupidly over the top detail in environment, but not like Halflife/halflife2 where clever texturing is used to give the illusion of detail.
The little girl reminded me of something but I can't put my finger on it. Basicly I think it will end up like chaser, great begining but no subsance.

of course I have been wrong before

Bullet time was in c64 games and before. You would get a powerup and it would slow down the enemies and so forth. Dream sequences were in games long before max pain and so on.
Takes something truly special to be seen as original now-a-days. It is how all the various 'features' are mixed together that makes or breaks a game. So if your looking for a game with something NEW it will be long, long waits between games. I felt this game mixes everything in nicly.
The little girl is featured in many 'scary' movies, games and books, Alice I think is a bit like that. There is a recentish movie with a picture of an evil looking child lit really darkly, cant remember what it is. That may be what you are thinking. :/

Yeah but its like almost identical with hallways and the red swirling sky, and unlike Max pain I didn't think it was that well done. Still it is a prerelise demo so the game may be better.

Dream sequences were in games long before max pain and so on.

As for it being hard to create something new because everything has been done, sure there is nothing new under the sun but the least people can do is try and impove on things that get rehashed over and again.

They have tried to improve. They are trying to improve the scare factor from Doom 3, they are trying to improve the NPC AI, they are trying to allow the NPC guys to do things like push over objects to make cover and so on. They are using nice special effects for bullet time, distortions from explosions and so on. They are trying to give music a bit of improvment over most games I've played. As for the guns, I've never fired any mp5's or anything so I couldn't tell you what feels real or not. They are trying to improve on the options players have to attack in FPS games by adding in melee combat such as the fly kick combos. So really, I think they are trying to improve on the stuff that gets rehased over and over again. :/

CRC is a unique number generated by a mathematical calculation based on the data of a non-corrupt file. A corrupt file is when a single bit or has changed and the file no longer work as intended. If a file somehow gets broken during transfer of medians the same mathematical calculation is passed through the file, the CRC number generated will be differnt to that of the oringal file, letting a program know if the file is corrupt, which in turn should let the user know.
Generally if you download it again, preferably from a differnt URL it should work.

It looks good and realistic. But really he works for Telstra, the Australian Government, US Government and McDonalds... You know he's evil!

Good work Toll your explanations as of late have been well thought out ^_^

Also, if you want games that are "new" you have to really go looking. You'll mostly find them in open source and freeware. Or at very least as a really cheap $10-$20 download game.

I find a good source is MegaGames free games section. It always has something you wouldn't believe could be made into a game ^_^
