i would love to have either of the last two, but i own the first one and its good enough for me. ive had experience with the 2nd one too, and though its a little bit better i dont think the tiny bit of speed justifys the higher price :/ but of course if you have the cash, then spend it. |

Umm why the f*** wouldn't you buy IDE? IDE burners are fine if you don't have a total s***kunt machine. You obviously do cos I have never burnt a coaster on my old 4x Philips IDE with 2mb buffer and I can burn at full speed with about 3 other programs open no worries. SCSI is a waste of money. |

Well anarot if you would really like to no y i wouldn't buy a ide burner it is because scsi aren't much more, about 50-80 more and by buying a scsi keeps ide channels free for expansion. In my machine i have 2 hd's internal zip, cdrom and scsi burner. If i didn't have a scsi burner i would have 1 less drive. I need a larger hd and i don't want to take out one of my current drives (13 gig and 30 gig) The more expansion room the better. I think to the future now at the present, obviously you don't. |

Obviously I am not a SK who would have a CDrom as well as a SCSI burner in my machine.... wtf have both (oh maybe so you can copy CD's...)?? My point was that there is no performance difference now, apart from maybe read speed and read stability. I'm sure those prices you quoted are not including a SCSI card... |

anarot, who would buy a burner and not have a cdrom in their machine. I think htat only SK's would do that. hmmm i think that includes you. Any one that has at least half a brain would have a cdrom/dvdrom and burner so they can clone cd's. Makes life a hell of alot easier. I don't no any of my friends that don't have a cdrom and burner in their machine. I did have one friend but he soon bought a cdrom coz he found having to change cd's when cloneing a btich. Also burners aren't very good readers. cdroms r much faster than a burner for a primary cd reader. |

Yeah Capto you would see if you read properly that I conceded that its a good idea to have a CDrom as well for copying CD's. However I am certain that a SCSI burner would be a much better reader than an IDE CDrom. That is one thing that SCSI is always noted for. ANd yeah I have a DVDrom and a Burner in my machine so I guess I am not a SK... :) You didn't answer my question - does that price include a SCSI card? And also - you are so interested in future expension, what about the fact that the SCSI card fills a PCI slot that could be used for something else.. why not just get another IDE card instead which is prolly cheaper and now is just as fast... |

german think of it like this speed time to burn a 74min cd 8 74/8 = 9.25 mins 10 74/10 = 7.4 mins 12 74/12 = 6.16 mins if you think its worth spending the extra money to save a few minutes per burn then do so, its that easy i have the first one and the only coasters i have made have been due to buffer underuns caused by my puter doing some HD refresh s*** or something (i dunno what it was) during the burn. the burner itself has never had a prob. ooh, cept with a cd-rw i have which has some bs crc error but i dunno whats going on there |

ok then drail siege, thanx for that man, i was either gonna go the 32x8 or 32x10, either of them will be a very decent speed, and will last quite a long time anyways. This is probably gonna sound really stupid and s***, but i dont care, the one thing that i dont understand is, the cd-r and cd-rw, what is the difference between them, and if there is a diff. y is that and so on??? |

All those burners are average & pretty overpriced, if you want the best go for the Plextor Plexiwriters - widely regarded as the best burner, has the most software support of any burner, ie. will work perfectly with basically every cd-burning software out, ezcd/discjuggler/clonecd/cdr-win/fireburner/nero and support all their features etc. like the new BURN-Proof, no more buffer underuns ever.. Comes in 12x10x32 or the new 16x12x32 .. CDR's cannot be written to after being finalized, CDRW's (re-write) can be written to again & again.. it's not a necessity but its best to go for the CDRW so you have the best of both. I basically use one cdrw disc to test things before burning em to a cdr, see if it's worth it or not, erase the disc and use it again & again, so it's pretty useful.. You may wanna search around and ask some questions, go here - cd-rom guide dot com You also may even wanna hold out a little while because 99-minute cd's have just been released in the US, and only a few burners support them at the moment. At least make sure whatever you buy will support them.. |

Zero, plextor burners could be classedas the best but they also cost 2 - 3 tiems as much as a standard retails burner. I don't think that it is worth the extra $500-$1000 to buy a plextor for home use. And also with reguardto the 99 mnitue cd's, yes theyhave been released in the Us but how long till we see them here ... 6 months .. 12 months, i think thatsomebaody has to make a decision when to buy something, you can always hold out on a purchase wating for the best part at the cheapest price. If i were to recommend a burner, i would buy a Sony scsi 32x10x4 for about $450 with scsi card. I keeps an ide channel free for more hd's and cdroms and also allows you to have more scsi drives, although they r expensive still keeps ide free for cheap hd's. Btw aranot, who has all of their pci slots full, i have 6 and agp and i still hace 1 free, i have agp 64meg g2, 2x network cards, scsi card and sound card, and modem. the only thing that i would use the other pci slot for would be a capture card or 2nd sound card. |

CD-R : You know this one. You buy a blank CD for $1.50 or so from sunlit and you burn it. You can't UNburn it or write over the stuff already burnt onto it. Much like the acronym WORM - Write Once Read Many. CD-RW : Pay a bit more for a RW CD and depending on the quality you can erase and REwrite onto them 1000's of times or so (over the previous data). Handy if you make lots of coasters or you want to take stuff to a friends house. You still have to run some CDR software to erase the disk though, it's not like a 650 meg ZIP disk or something. It seems most drives now are RW and there's not a whole lot of price difference. |

I dunno where the hell you're buying your gear from but you can pickup the top of the line plextors for around $400-500 which is a fair bit cheaper than most other 'lesser' quality burners like sony & ricoh.. cheaper & better - tough call.. |

Nero does rule. Yamaha is also another good brand. I have a Philips one, which I read is the same as the HP ones and it is great - never had one problem that was caused by the burner. I have also read like everywhere that Plextor kick ass in every aspect, even read speed/quality. If you can find one get that. Capto - why would you want a second sound card? |

Aranot, if u don't no, some ppl need 2 sounds cards and 2 video cards in their machines. They do sounds mixing and stuff on their machines, my university have 3 sound cards in some of their machines. Ross also has 2 sound cards in his machine, it allows u to have EAX and A3D on simultaniously. |

I would ask if I didn't "know"..... If you where doin mixing why not get a decent soundcard like the Isis that has multiple imputs and s***. You have EAX and A3D simltaneously? can you explaing to me how you hear both when you only have one set of headphones, therefore coming out of only one sound card? Unless you use two sets of speakers. I guess that would work... but I mean WTF?? Who would go to the trouble of doin that.... I would like you to explain how having two soundcards would help with mixing stuff? I am asking cos I don't know, in case you are wondering.... |

some ppl, like me don't have $800 to buy a good sound card for mixing so when at parties doing music, u can listen to stuff b4 u play it, and also at home while doing work for uni and web pages i can have one playing in speakers and the other in headpohnes or anotherset of speakers so i can compare at the same time, yes it is nescesary. |

ohh ffs wart, what i said origonally is that i sujjested getting a scsi burner instead of an ide burner because of future expandability. And SK anarot can on and tried to thnik he is no all and say that ide is a better option than scsi. So if you are saying that i am not trying to help then go ahead, i am not posting on this thread again, coz i don't want to get personal with arguments. |

f***ing hell guy's tone it down CaPt0 was just trying to help as were a number of other guy's.You can have a healthy debate without getting abusive it isn't against any rules you know. I for one like to hear what you all have to say about the tech side of pc's(although a good percentage of it goes right over my head)But for some of us who work and don't have the time to go to uni or TAFE this is the only chance I get to learn from others(yeah I know thats a pretty scary thought) So do us all a favour, give more info and alittle less personal abuse. It maybe a suprise to some of you but I like to hear what alot of you have to say about pc's as I need all the help I can get. |

harris technology in sydney have plextors, look under hardware/storage options Harris site they list the scsi version on site, but advertised in the australian personal computer magazine the ide version for $769. Plextor are made in the US, which may explain the exxy price, but they are renown for quality. Forte computer are advertising the same ide drive for $746 Forte site I've akways been a fan of yamaha burners, and there's a new 16x10x40 model been released ((CRW-2100), but havent seen it advertised in oz yet. Yamaha site my first attempt at html, lemme see if this werks |

HAHAHA AnaRoT if it makes you feel better to reasure yourself that you are at your sexual peak and there for would be a better prospect for some woman to go to bed with go right ahead. Being able to go at it like the energizer bunny isn't what it's all about most girls like a guy that gets them going not just himself.Don't forget mate I have been there done that and I'm still going strong.Well I guess I must be doing something right I have 3 chicks on the go at the moment, considering I'm no Tom Cruise so I am just thinking they just like what I give them hehehe. Not to worry mate maybe you'll learn how to use it as you get older :) |

Xitel 0wnz j00! I got one, they are great, dual speaker outputs, front and rear. a3d2.0, just find patch and update it, too make compatibler with most games. Some people have heard what my a3d is like, and I considered it cheating. If you have played counter-strike, and know that map called de_dust. I'm a CT, and I can heard T's buy weapons(2 players I tried this out). Plus in assualt, I can tell excatly where they are on the roof. Its fun when you can shoot through walls and hit people, and make them think you cheat. :D |
