He climbed in the exit hole, pretty obvious. I was a smart kid and used a coat hangar to pull the toys out.

yeah. well says in the article about the original one:

Robert took off his coat and squeezed through an opening in the machine. He landed in the stuffed animal cube.

Granted I've never paid much attention to these machines, I don't remember ever seeing a big enough gap in them for kids to climb through but obviously there must be.

So why the f*** couldn't he get out the same way he got in? There shouldn't be any hole in a machine like that, why pay when you can just reach in and grab a toy? I'm sure he learned some kind of lesson. They can play that at his 21st birthday party.

Because of the flap you see, you can force your way past it when it's fully open (pushed inward), and you're on the outside, because there is a space adjacent to the flap when the flap is in the inward position, but if you're on the inside; forcing on the flap just pushes it into the fully closed position, ensuring that you stay trapped.

The purpose of the hole is to allow prizes from the skilltester to be removed from the machine. The idea of the flap is to prevent toys from being removed forcibly, however if you force the flap into the open position, the space allows you to slide in a long skinny arm, or child, or coathangar. If you want to get the thing back out, you must maintain the flap in the open position somehow, such as by using your other hand (from the outside) - but that's difficult if you are all the way inside the machine, and the flap has closed behind you.

I am intrigued by what you mean by "surprise" at the end of this statement
