Yes, yes I know and I agree its a waste of time.

But if you are a Hippy and want to delude yourself you can break out the candles and incense sticks whilst dancing around in the backyard in the dark.

I'll be firing up the Plasma TV and having a BBQ

We're going to be doing it at our place - I personally figure it'll be fun to turn the lights out and sink beers while talking s*** and watching the night sky. I forgot what it's like to go camping it's been so long.

I wonder how it all works with the power grid/stations if suddenly 90% of the power demand just drops off and then just as suddenly comes back.

A massive sudden demand could cause issues. I obviously have no idea how it all works but it would be quite funny if the whole stupid idea caused some kind of epic failure and there were mass blackouts.

It would f***ing suck having no power for an extended period but it would still be kinda funny.

^ They just take coal mills out of service & close the governors to reduce output (ie less steam goes into the turbine).

GTs can throttle back in seconds.

No problems really.

umm... Can someone explain why you wouldn't do it? Even if it is a symbolic gesture, why wouldn't you participate and let people know that you don't want to f*** the planet?

because the power stations will still be burning coal etc to make electricity even if it doesnt get used.

Well thats what I figured, if they did stop 3/4 the turbines and suddenly the demand went WAAAAAAAAAAAAY back up really fast would that cause brownouts etc?

Which at a guess would be why they would not do that...

Hmm... when you cut back on your electricity usage, you save the environment a little bit but you also save a little bit of money. This money then ends up going towards you buying something which costs a little bit of energy (manufacturing/distribution/usage/disposal etc.) which ends up harming the environment. Wonder how the two balance out on average?

I'm guessing its futile. What's definitely stupid is floating a gigantic light bulb shaped air balloon over Sydney for a few hours to promote the event, thereby cancelling out a large chunk of the minuscule amount of good that will be done (ignoring the above effect).

And yes, there's the China thing.

last year the effect of earth hour on power consumption was statistically insignificant. earth hour would have been a success except for ALL THE SPOILERS AND TRAITORS WHO LEFT THEIR LIGHTS ON.

i would predict earth hour would have no effect this year as well. even more hilarious would be if the raw figures showed energy use increased. i think such a result is just as likely as the raw figures showing energy use decreasing. my guess is a result like that would be swept under the carpet until someone can do a proper evaluation that would show there was no effect. then again there many ways you can compare energy consumption without doing it properly and one of them is bound to show a decrease. ie: compare today to the same day a year ago. compare today to yesterday. etc, etc. just ignore the measures that show an increase or no effect and proudly show the one that shows a decrease.

If enough people do it and the power stations are on their highest setting for output, won't everyone cutting their power at once overload something somewhere? I forget how it works but I thought power stations always needed a certain amount of load to function properly and if everyone turns off their stuff..... am I just nuts?

Wrong.

Anyway, Earth Hour is about getting massive amounts of individual people to do something together. The power saved would be insignificant to the total power of the year.

you're absolutely right whoop, the powerstations suffer from an excess amount of VARs which could give them all kinds of hell.

Oops, I forgot. Just walked outside, and it looks like the other 6 or so units in my building all have their lights on too. =P

Ah well, I saved power by buying a huge LCD instead of a huge plasma. That counts, yeah?

The Paddo switched their lights off, for the most part.

Was anyone at the Casino tonight? Apparently they were doing the lights-off thing, but how would that work? Chaos amongst the gaming tables I would've thought..

No - just misinformed.

Modern power stations can function quite happily 'islanded' (ie separated from the grid).

They do have steam bypass systems to dump all the excess energy in an emergency and can then throttle back to minimum load, supporting its own auxiliaries (motors etc).

OK some bloke just invented how to turn windows into light sources at night without electricity. Can't find a link but it was all over TV. There is a perfectly productive way to reduce your lightbulb usage and that is to help get this guy selling these windows - not this useless f***ing earth hour s***.

I was very disappointed with the lack of lights out, at least in Indro. I get that businesses need to stay running and stuff, but it would've been nice to see a bit more effort made.

I was hoping it'd be like when Halleys comet came by last time - I remember the whole goddamn suburb was black, first time I'd ever seen anything like it in Brisbane.

Imagine having one night a month where it was lights out (predominantly) so you could actually make a half-assed effort to see the stars!

Partyhat, if your PC died, and you're frequently having your consoles die (haven't you lost 3 360s and a Wii?), maybe there's something wrong with your house wiring?

Obviously the TV stations werent realy supportive of this as there was still tv on for that hour.

Until big business gets behind things like this nothing anyone does will make any difference.

The TV stations would obviously loss alot of money if they didnt show tv for an hour, which proves that in the end, money always wins.

Yeah, I'm gonna go with dodgy wiring

Buy a decent surge board (not a $30 crap shake from the supermarket).
