Topic: Program to self-throttle my Internet?

It seems like I cannot control myself when it comes to the downloads, and it is frustrating when I can do f*** all for 3 weeks, so I would like some way to self-throttle myself - perhaps allocate a daily quota and if I go over it gets throttled till the next day. Is there some software I can do that with?

I've heard things about NetLimiter.

This sounds doomed to fail. Exercise some self control!

What ISP are you with?

Net Usage for firefox calculates your daily quota based on your remaining limit and will show you when you are over/under etc. It won't throttle you but its a good visual indicator.

I use it to judge whether I can afford to download something large.

I'm with trog, doomed to fail. Your program will throttle you and you'll think to yourself "well i'll just download this one big file", disable it, and you'll say that x10 and before you know it you'll be over the limit.

I did the same thing when I told my computer to shut itself down at a specific time to stop me staying up all night, I kept aborting the shutdown command to finish 1 little thing that turned into more little things and what do you know it's 2am.

I use MUM with Internode and it's very handy. Before I download something huge I wave my mouse over it and it tells me my daily quota for the rest of the billing period. I have never ever been throttled...

I use your MOM as well.

if you have a billion modem it may have inbound/outbound throttling as well as time of day blocking. etc

Only really works if you are far from reaching your quota, since the usage meter lags behind the real usage (awesome tool though).
Another vote for self-control.

The only way I can see this working is if he has someone standing behind him with a cattle prod and blasts him every time a big file starts to leech.

I think we'd need to auction that opportunity, we could make a lot of money for some charity, it is Idol after all ;)

I don't want slow internet until i've gone over a certain limit.

OK so I got the netlimiter app from the local computer store, how can I do this?
