not that I am unhappy with winamp, it's be tried and tested and trustworthy for as long as I can remember, but wondering if there is anything 'better' out there?

I've briefly used itunes and it was 'ok' at best (imo), I've flirted with foobar2000 a while back as well, again it goes in the 'ok' basket, I've always ended up going back to winamp.

Is there anything else I should give a lash?

i use winamp (5.094) and wmp for when i just want to hear a specific song (have mp3s associated with wmp)

got sick of clicking on a single track and having winamp drop my playlist

If you want something that just does the job without any bloat, stick to old versions of winamp. If you want something that looks pretty, there are a lot of options.

There is nothing that is good. iTunes is f***ed, doesn't load half my mp3s or any of my WMAs (lol yeah...it's easy to rip cds into wma shutup). The quickest thing to do is to organise your music using windows explorer, and then play it with windows media player. Winamp is oldschool but a bit pointless since you probably have a dozen programs that will do the job, only with an interface your mouse doesn't constantly miss.

foobar + uipanels + fofr theme

You need to have your mp3's tagged correctly and find all the album art but once done it looks f***ing sweet imo.

Also the lyrics tab works as well for almost every song I have. It goes off and searches a DB and returns the lyrics. So if you ever wonder wtf they just said its easy as pie to find out :)

Funnily enough they don't have lyrics for the foo's latest album... it is fairly new though so meh :P

I use SongBird. It's built on the Mozilla framework, has iPod support (even latest gen Nanos, etc) and is open source goodness.

Keeping semi-ontopic what do you guys use for your ipods?

After getting the free one from the inthemix hitman comp I went to download aidstunes and found out it was ~60 meg...

f*** that I say and start looking for a free 3rd party developed one. I figure I'd rather not have all the lame services running in the background anyway and ended up settling on yamipod which was ~1 meg.

Winamp as always, and yes, enque as default action should always be ticked.

That is a good question... as far as I can remember its always been like that.

Aha turn off global backgrounds
In the cog settings panel, then backgrounds. It is most definately ftw that way :)

I've gotten a few pms about my foobar setup so I may as well post it in here.

For my mates I just install foobar for them then copy my folder over the top so they dont have to f*** around getting s*** in the right place.

I just googled some random file hoster, if theres a better one feel free to put it on there.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4XC6W170

1) install foobar2000

2) get above file

3) copy that over the top of your directory

4) run foobar

3) down in the bottom right corner u should see a cog, or if its hidden a little tab in the very corner, go in there and get into the settings with the cog. In there go to the diagnostic tab, you should see 2 fonts missing and some tree thing (the tree doesnt work with vista so forget it I don't use it anyway). Click the 2 red fonts and it should link you to a download.

5) close foobar, download those 2 fonts and install them, reopen foobar.

6) pretty sure my config should have global backrounds off anyway but if not back into the settings and background tab, uncheck the box.

7) down near the cog, the very left icon that looks like a cigarette will make it split the now playing and playlist in the same window like I have.

8) drag in your mp3s then right click the playlist
sort group by > artist / date / album

Winrar, it should now look like mine.

For it to work correctly you must have all your albums tagged correctly in numerical order and all have the correct album and artist name or it will f***up and look all monged.

You also need to have a image of the coverart in each folder otherwise u wont get a pic. If theres multiple like rear cover etc, just delete the other pics or rename the cover to like 1.jpg otherwise you'll probably get the wrong pic.

Thanks Dan, looks like a slightly more polished and less buggy version of yamipod.

Will use.

Thanks for that Rubba, but I've got quite a few ministry of sound albums (with all the different artists) and it looks like ass when sorted by album! Sort by folder makes it look even gayer

My only thought would be to rename all the artists to MOS, and just add the artist to the trackname field "Artist - Trackname"

id setup foobar to look like yours rubba, but with over 100gig of mp3's getting all the cover art and having all the id3 tags the same would take far to much time.

i just use winamp and have my music really well organised in there folders.

Who needs fancy album art and lyrics anyway? I dunno about you guys but I don't ever even see my media player unless I'm watching a movie. It sits tucked away in the systray or minimized on the task bar. Does it just make it easier to find stuff or something?

It did take a few hours to do... but I took it as an opportunity to clear out all the crap I never listened to.

Having it fullscreened on a spare machine makes a great party jukebox interface.

i use foobar2000 as well... but it looks way different to rubbas coz i configured it myself with the idea of having a pretty basic interface that just displayed the info i wanted (with some formatting & sorting functions). there might be better players around but i like foobar coz you can make it exactly the way you want it. & i like how it handles it's playlists.

heh, i've tried to give my foobar config (demon.fcs) to other people before with no success. i think it's coz i use the columns.ui plugin (plus a few other plugins like the amip mp3 to irc spammer n stuff) & then configured on top of that. even to get my home & work computers using the same foobar was to zip up the whole foobar directory & copy it over a fresh install on the other machine.

still, if your keen... here is my foobar directory zipped.

it might work just unzipping it anywhere... but will prolly come up with a whole lot of errors coz it can't find the mp3s for the playlists. delete all the playlists & create your own & it should be good to go :P
