Stumbled upon some video's of Spore that i found quite interesting. Haven't heard a great deal of talk about this title for a long while , thought it may well be worth bringing up. The release date as listed on www.ebgames.com is May 2008.
"From the mind of Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, comes SPORE™, an epic journey that takes you from the origin and evolution of life through the development of civilization and technology and eventually all the way into the deepest reaches of outer space." - http://www.spore.com/index.php And for something funny *UPDATE: From Spore.com "Get ready for the next Big Bang this fall! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Maxis today announced that Spore™, the highly anticipated game from the creators of The Sims™, will be available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7. Spore will be available for the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS™, and mobile phones. "The wait is almost over," said Maxis Chief Designer Will Wright. "We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year." " Teaser: http://www.spore.com/screenshots.php?movieID=7&play=hi |

Man. I've got March 3rd listed. If this (May) is true, it sucks :(
I was going to buy a 9600GT just for this. |

Cause so many other people were interested..
""listened in on the EA conference call today via webcast and finally someone at the end asked when the release date for Spore was, in looser terms John (CEO) said this, "We aren't giving out specific release dates, but some time before the holidays." and that they're paying "enormous" attention to it. So there you have it. We can expect to see spore this year, sometime between Spring and Fall."" |

That 35 minute movie showcasing the game is f***ing awesome!
Before looking at that I wouldn't have bothered with the game at all I don't think but now I am absolutely 100% sold, it looks like something I could sink many many hours into :D. I don't think I have been this excited about an upcomming game in years. |

Will has also stated the creature editor will be released prior to the game as the demo. Thank f***. Now let's hope the creatures made in it are compatible with the final game. Most delayed game since DNF ;/ At least we'll get another graphics card cycle - GeForce 10x00 (let's hope for a better name) for Spore anyone? |

If they 9x00 cards continue to be as delayed as Spore I'd say they'll be released in Sept as well (Currently on track for a mid march release).
If only the Wii and PC creatures were interchangeable... |

No mention of Xbox360/PS3 versions yet EH! Interesting. I'm intrigued to see how the Wii version will compare functionality-wise to the PC version too.

Ditto Scuzzy.
I don't think there is much else on the horizon for me aside from this and Starcraft 2. GTA4 will probably end up on my 360. |

Hehe, yeah I spent like 3 hours watching all the Spore vid's after this thread was originally posted by you CeMaX, I am well and truly sold.
Now we all just have to wait 7+ months for it to finally get to us, until then I shall be pining away and trying to fill the void with lesser more run of the mill entertainment. I really hope it takes off in a big way and we start to see a new genre of multiple theatre games come through :D. |

I'm firmly expecting Spore to be unmitigated crap.
Mainly because that way when it turns out to be playable(maybe even, dare i hope, fun) but not the second coming of christ i'll be happy. |

I think the base game itself should be interesting and fun to a certain point, what I am truly holding out for though is the mods that will undoubtedly pile on if this game gathers enough steam from the community.
There is a great deal of potential this game engine brings to the table and the resultant explosion of mods and games inspired by the original title will be where the real fun will be :D. |

Somehow I think Spore's moddability will be much like WoWs. The core is untouchable but you can toy with the UI.
My biggest fear is that Will is not taking this game seriously enough. Look at the videos from some of the earliest builds and the initial stage is full of beautiful microbial life in a soup with fluid dynamics (ie: the first video in this thread). It was almost if you were looking through a microscope. The latest videos show that the cells have been replaced with comical characters with big googaly eyes (Below). When asked about the change, particularly the eyes, will replied with something along the lines of "it was to make them look cuter". I'll try and find the exact quote. |

Biggest let down of this (and basically every other Maxxis game) will be the lack of a multiplayer component.

100% agree with Lynx on both things mentioned. I believe the game will be modable to the point WoW can be modded. Take a look at 'The Sim's 2' , largely popular game and how many expansions have been released. Remembering Will is the same man behind 'The Sims' series, i expect the same from Spore. Leading me to believe that 'modding' won't be easily done.
It has already been mentioned that Flying creatures and Underwater creatures/cities have been left out of the game, and will be looked at resurfacing in expansion packs. In reference to what you said Lynx, i don't think 'Will isn't taking it serious' is the right way to say it. I believe, due to some of the interviews i have read/watched , EA and Maxis are talking about Spore as being the next big Franchise/Brand. Will is just making the game more family friendly. I also noticed the changes from video to video over time. You can notice clearly in earlier footage the animals eat each other, and there is blood. I have since seen a feeding animation again where this was removed. I just think it's headed in the direction similar to the fan base which took hold of 'The Sims'. I still believe the game will rock my jocks though.. |

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't want the gameplay sacrificed for the sake of making the game toddler friendly.
If you have 100 minutes to spare, watch this film. while quite old now, the basics haven't changed much since the video was recorded. Will Wright along with musician Brian Eno talk about procedural generation of games and music, including how procedural generation works within Spore. Raven, i believe one of the reasons the creature editor will be released is so content will be ready to go live when the game does. I would presume people will be able to keep characters they have created.
I have watched that video prior Lynx, Spore will likely improve game developing techniques for sandbox type games in the future if nothing else. It seems so immense, this video was only leaked a few days ago, another 30min job. Will Wright presenting Spore to NASA. http://www.xspore.com/news/371_spore_video_nasa.html Mainly showcases the Space side of the Game. Which in part seems huge. But with the creature/tribal/civ etc games also , the gameplay will be unimaginable |

Couple of interviews over at Level Up. They are only a few days old and are rather in depth. A good read i thought.
