The "weddings" where a 30-something couple and their kids (from previous relationships/out of wedlock) are all together at the altar seem really really trashy to me.

Kat, yes i remember you met her when we went back to visit Aus.
I am afraid so, we are still friends but it just didn't work out... rather sad time i am afraid. Infact while i am here working in Holland she is in our apartment moving stuff into her new one. |

I say have kids when your life is stable and fufilled plus your finances are in check.
I know WAY too many people that are having kids (some as young as 20) or have kids that basically have ruined their lives. I have no idea why they do this, the ONLY explanation I can think of is that (in at least 50%) the women is trying to add some sort of meaning to her life when they 1. Have no career/eduation/skills, 2. Have no money or assets, 3. Have a partner that they aren't happy with. |

I don't watch Andrew Denton, but Seinfeld was on his show a few months back and he summarised it perfectly I think
It was along the lines of, I lived the single lifesytle and believed it was the best way to live, and now that I'm marriage, I believe both are the best or something. Single and married lifesytles are different, you have different friends, do different things together (in general). Both are great, so just enjoy life and party on? |

Seinfeld said that when he was single, he didn't like haing out with his married friends because he thoughts their lives were boring and depressing.
He then said that when he got married he didn't like hanging out with his single friends because he felt that their lives were dull and meaningless. He then finished up by saying "and in both cases, I think I was pretty much spot on!" |

I always thought that the point of marriage was to have kids?
Otherwise why go to all the trouble and expense of mrriage if you arent going to have children? Marriage will be become more and more redundant. Ppl wont be having children because of the horrific overpopulation crisis. Therefore there is no point in getting married. |

^^ HAHAHAH that seriously made me lol.
I ain't married. I've met a few girls who I could have married... most I slept with... generally the ones I didn't sleep with are the ones I still think I could be married to. I do like the idea of a public ceremony to "declare mutual love" and all that, but I'd only do something religious if it sincerely meant somethign to the girl. Otherwise, let's all get drunk, f***, and party. |

4yrs in March. No rush to breed.
We still hang out with singles and other married couples, but I think our's is a rare sort of relationship where that still works cause we both have so many valuable friendships in both situations. |

Marriage seems pointless and boring to me. Old people are no fun and most of them are married. I have 2 brothers and a sister who are married and they are f***ing boring. They enjoy s*** like going to bunnings to buy towel racks and new handles for pantry doors, f*** that s***. Marriage makes you old and I would rather have actual fun not make believe fun. Look at couples in cars when they drive how much fun do they look like they are having?

I dont get why you think that if you marry someone and then get divorced that you have ruined your life?
Obviously a divorce is not what is top of the list of things to do once you are married, but if that's what happens then that's what happens. If you do stay single and never have kids you'll probably be thinking you've 'ruined' your life when you're seventy years old and sitting alone on Christmas day without family or friends, no one calls you on your birthday and no one visists you when you're sick. Your life is what you make out of it. |

What if you plan to never make to old age? I smoke, drink, take things I shouldn't, drive really fast and generally have no regard for life. If peoples dreams are to reach 70+ sitting in a nursing home s***ting their pants, forgetting everything and complaining about how everything is scary while ungrateful kids surround them and see them as a burden you go for it. Christmas is nothing more then a day when the shops aren't open, birthdays are for people who like to see how high they can count and a good friend will come snuff you out when your sick. |

I smoke, drink, take things I shouldn't, drive really fast and generally have no regard for life. Well you're probably in the best position to end up in a nursing home with someone wiping your arse. My Mum just had a nasty heart attack, brought on by 40 years of smoking and drinking. Due to surgery complications she'll probably spend the rest of her days in a wheelchair. Party on. |

IMO the only way to get married in this day and age when everyone expects everything about your wedding to be about them ( i.e. bossy family ) and the average wedding is $20k+ is to elope to vegas and get married by elvis with a dude in a bear outfit as the witness ( unless you can find a real bear! ). Then come home and chuck a massive party.

I always thought that the point of marriage was to have kids? You don't need to bemarried to make babies. Marriage is about a partnership. Of course, for your previous partner you wanted to dress up as an imperial officer from star wars, have the imperial march as the wedding march, and you where going to let me come along in a kilt so I could sing "IF YOU WANT MY BODY" on the stage afterwards. You come up with the best ideas for weddings ever. |

married last oct. have 1.2 kids as well. 1 is 19months old other is due in august as well. been together for 6years. travelled around the world together for 12months in each others pockets (best test of relationship ever). wedding cost a fair bit cause we paid for lots of stuff and did it on straddie. still only cost alittle over $10k. $20k+ is just for pompous asses that want to show off.
have loads of single friends, and also married ones. we still have single mates come over and spend the night, stay up late drinking and sometimes going out. we take it in turns to a degree. She works, i stay home and look after the little one, and in 2 months that will reverse. I didnt really want to get married, would have been happy to stay engaged for the rest of our lives, but we did it cause she wanted to do it, and we wanted to have a family get together. It wasnt a christian wedding, but had some catholic parts to it, some pagan and some made up for our own likings. |

Back in the olden days religious ppl were supposed to stay chaste until marriage... lol. Women wore a white dress to symbolize that they havent rooting around and are virgins.... rather pointless nowerdays unless you are Guy Sebastian's fiance.
There are alot of unwed couples in Australia who are just as faithful to their partners as those who do get married. In the end its just a piece of paper. |

Just a piece of paper? Wow what a romantic notion. Yea, they do say the average is $20k plus but unless you have a really big family then I don't see how you would *need* to spend anywhere near that much. But hey, it's a special day and if you have the money then go for it. I just want a nice simple wedding, something small and outdoors with just family and close friends. I like the idea of a wedding being about the two people involved and I don't really see the need to have a massive ceremony and invite everyone I know to come along

A wedding can cost as much or as little as you want. Based on 90 guests ours will cost around $6k
ZOMG, can't wait! |

We got married in Fiji June of last year. Just me and the wife, no family or friends. Then we came back and had a big party, kinda like a reception.
Was an awesome way to do it IMO, and we have no regrets. In some ways it would have been nice for friends to share the day with us, but in other ways it was really personal and not marred by other people's expectations, pressure etc. Plus, the whole tropical island thing was pretty sweet. |

Did you tell people before you left for fiji or keep it a secret? I would love to be able to do this style, but I dont know if I can get it past the missus :/

You don't need to bemarried to make babies. Marriage is about a partnership. Don't worry, one day when a girl shows you her vagina, it will start to dawn on you. just like what happened with typo. except hopefully, in your case, she won't be a thai mail order bride who was previously a man. |

Engaged ... with no date set.Well bugger me! Top stuff Obes. I've been married for 14 years and together for 18. Lots of ups and downs, but certainly an experience! Also, marraige shouldn't = kids, that's just stupid. It's got nothing to do with the kids, and everything to do with you and your partner. |

Did you tell people before you left for fiji or keep it a secret? I would love to be able to do this style, but I dont know if I can get it past the missus :/ We we first decided to get married, we were going to keep it a secret. However we realised that it wouldn't be the right thing for us to do as far as our parents were concerned. My wife wanted me to ask her Dad for permission out of respect. Man I was nervous as hell and kind of blurted it all out in one go. As it was I shouldn't have been worried and it's kinda funny now but at the time it was a big deal, cos I didn't know him that well etc. He was a total champ and I felt a tad foolish but meh! Yah live and learn. Protip for those getting married in tropical resorts: When having a shaky last bourbon at the bar while waiting for your bride to come floating down on the wedding boat, and you decide to snack on deep fried coconut to freshen up your breath for the wedding kiss, make sure you don't have a big bit of coconut stuck in your front teeth for the duration of the ceremony. It's damn near impossible to pick coconut outta your teeth while concentrating on vows and whatnot. |

if living with a woman for 6 months means they are legally entitled to half your s*** as a wife is then I guess I'll have 5 or so ex wives hunting me down for cash.
time to move again methinks... meanwhile, Miss Koopz #1 owns all my shiz. and if she even angers Daddy she'll be sent over to Iraq so fast that her head will spin, and she'll pray for good old Aussie style army bastardisation the same as the rest of the Koopz's did is it true you can stone a woman to death in the middle east if she is a harlot? do you have to share that with others or is that a private affair? last edited by koopz at 23:53:20 12/Jan/08 |

well since marriage is a religious ceremony and i ain't orthodox religious i never want to be married
this came to a head in 2000 when i was forced to propose to the missus and i did it because i was forced.. not because i wanted to get married... she wanted the typical girly wedding and i didn't... 9 years of relationship down the toilet anyway i'm very happy atm and have found a girl who wants the same as me and believes more fundamentally what i believe in - i have a feeling we will be together for along time yet |

you are living in sin and will burn in a fiery hell. your family and friends should disown you because you are in league with satan and a bad influence. repent! |

Pfft marriage doesn't have to have anything to do with religion. I'm not religious at all which is why I won't be getting married in a church or having a priest run the ceremony

I was married back in November last year. Regretfully I didn't really have much to do with the planning of the day.
The major thing we forgot to do was pack an esky full of drinks and food for when we were taking photos. What a big mistake that was :( Anyway ignore all the negative comments on here. All the best. BTW We already have 1 kid and a cat :P |

I found the opposite. I was told that if I didn't get involved, it showed I didn't care. So the next thing I got involved in (the invitations), I was shot down by every female in a 20m radius everytime I suggested something. It was at this point I said... It's all yours!
Also, weddings are for the guests, the bride and the groom, in that order. |

I think that sucks Mantra. Women who ask the man what he wants only to ignore his wishes because it isn't *** enough. Pitiful but way too common.
I know what elvis wants out of the day and that anything else he really isn't fussed over, and while I am no bridezilla, I am. You are far more generous than I am, I would put 'the bride, the mother/fmil, guests, groom' in your typical wedding planning for list |

I think you'll find on the day that you'll be so worried about the guests and that you'll forget that the day was supposed to be about you and your hubby. Well, that's what I've found with my and other peoples weddings I've been involved in.

I like to think that I wasn't 'one of those women' but after arranging a second dress (for very legit, non ego related reasons) I can't help but think I am taking it all way too seriously.
My bridesmaid is doing a good job of keeping me in check :) I won't have a brother in law though looking out for me like your SIL though :) haha, this is getting a bit dolly like for me :P |

just like what happened with typo. except hopefully, in your case, she won't be a thai mail order bride who was previously a man. You're just bitter that I'm good looking enough to get transexual mail order brides from Thailand. I'm sure that warmed up liver in a plastic bag is working out real well for you though. I'm sure it doesn't guilt trip you to drive it round on weekends. |

So why the second dress? It is hard not too take things too seriously when you have everyone telling how it's one of the most important days of your life etc etc. Personally I think you've already had one of the most imporant days, ie the birth of your daughter. Also, you so are totally going dolly :P

1. it doesn't cost 20 grand.
2. Its not just to prove it, its to provide legal protections to both parties eg. if you die. |

out of 8 or so of my mates who are now married, I'd say 1 maybe 2 of then spent less then 10K
it's defo a 15K+ day, s*** most of the 'decent' places in Syd charge around 100 per head just for the food, add on the booze, car hire, photographer (some of those f***ers charge 5k for the day) and all the other various costs... it turns into a f***ing expensive day. I don't really give a s*** for weddings, it's just a piece of paper in my mind, then again I am not in a 'serious' relationship, but I'd just f*** off to vegas and get married there or something, I can't see the point in spending an assload of cash on a wedding, if the two sets of parents are keen as to throw money away they can give me the cash and I'll use for the mortgage or any other relevant expenses I have at the time! |

family paid for the whole thing, and we got given 5 grand in presents (requested cash, not presents) which i then proceeded to spend on booze and food on the honeymoon |

Well, then there is that. If you parents are paying for it, then I guess you have no reason to cut back costs.
We are paying for it all ourselves so 'we' looked around and saved wherever we could. Most of it is being done by us and not a wedding co-coordinator or function centre. HeardY - I don't think Brisbane's prices are on par with Sydney's just yet. Plus as said earlier. It can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it |

oh, we still had a budget
just the budget was not to spend any of our cash still, we had 100 people, booze and tons of nibblies and i think all up it was about 12 grand including petals dress and stuff although, i could be wrong; to whoever mentioned it earlier, an esky packed with beers is essential for having pre-beer beers while you are waiting around for photos and stuff; |

Mines upto about $20k budgetted (excluding honeymoon), it isn't over the top or lavish as far as I'm concerned.. it's pretty easy to rack up the dollars when things photographers can hit $2k. We focused ours on spending the cash in the things that will make the memory last and are important to us (good photography, good decorations, nice invites, etc). We cut back in areas where we didn't really give a f*** what people thought or the cost was just ridiculous - perfect example is instead of paying an extra $10/head for dessert, we're feeding them the wedding cake.
Also we get married on the Sunday and fly out on Tuesday for the honeymoon.. so wtf is there to do on the Monday? We've been together over 6 years and living together for 5 years so rooting isn't exactly new territory. I guess I could spend another day/night in the hotel but that leaves us with little time to get home and packed to fly out just after lunch. I can just see the Monday with us having breakky, catching up with guests that stayed over in the hotel, then heading home to clean the house, pack up the kit and then watch DVDs/play WoW on Monday night :) So what did others do between the day after the wedding and the day of the honeymoon start? |

When you're Italian, and you have about 100 family members on 1 side of the family, it costs $20k. Not to mention, all wogs have high expectations for weddings. Previously, my 2 older cousins that have been married were wed at the Marriott, and the Sheraton. last edited by casa at 12:05:05 14/Jan/08 |

no idea hwat ours cost, but it was reaosnably pricey.
We had 125 people and it was at Brett's Wharf (ceremony & reception) The only think I did as part of the organisation was choose the winelist and make spirits only available to people over 60, so my grandparents could all drink their whiskey. the dress looked expensive, but no idea what it cost, I think the food was about $80pp and we just had an open bar tab - which from memory turned out cheaper than if we had chosen the pre packaged drinks option. |

Everyone remarked on what a solid wedding it was. We had ~80 guests and had way more food and booze than everyone could get through. We only spent 600 on photos and its orobably my only regret. Not every photo was good enough to put in an album but we still ended up with a few hundred good shots by the time everyone sent us theirs as well. |

Pretty much what I plan on doing.* *Just kidding. Although, when in Vegas... Nonetheless, not married yet. last edited by amyescence at 22:45:15 14/Jan/08 |
