Subject says it all. I'm just curious what other people think about it. Is it a good/bad idea? Does anyone here bother to do it, or is it too much hassle when CA/Umart is just down the road?

As the Australian dollar is so competitive with the US atm, It seems like you could get some pretty good deals for video cards/cpu's etc. from places like amazon.com

Is it worth the risk in regards to warranty, breakage, loss etc.?

Cheers.

for your average PC part it's not really worth it but I found for server gear e.g. Operton CPU's, Raid Cards etc they're far cheaper to import them than to buy them here, warranty and returns is just one of those risks you take.

Almost always: no. Mainly due to warranty as mentioned. Unless it's an uncommon item that is hard to find in Australia, I'd stay away from importing.

Hell I even avoid buying expensive parts from online stores in Australia, just to avoid having to mail s*** back and forth in the event of a warranty claim. Would never dream of doing that internationally either.

Yeh warranty is the killer.

Any benefit arising from currency diffs between au and the manufacturing nation shpuld have in theory been passed on anyway - they're sure happy enough to blame aweak dollar for increases!

Thanks for the feedback. I can imagine it would be a nightmare to receive faulty parts from overseas on top of warranty complications.

Just seems like you'd save alot of money that's all :)

Nay.

If you can't find the part locally and no shop will get it in for you, hit up one of the respectable online stores in Aus.
