Does VLC work on Vista? If so, just use that.

I've been using the CCCP for a while now, have had no dramas with it.

Well I finally caved and installed vista out of curiosity and it's just even keel. I've had minimal compatibility issues, no video codec related ones. That said, I haven't noticed any real benefit either. It's just prettier.

It might not be a warranted upgrade, but it's certainly not "s***".

I was pretty happy with vista64, then I got back into coh and it crashed all the f***ing time and I assumed it was vista 64bit video drivers so went back to xp32 and coh still crashes all the time the c***. could've just stayed running vista with it's pretty things

Another vote for K-Lite Codec Pack. I've found that playing videos and installing codecs in Vista has been no different than it was in XP.

I have a problem with Vista. The start up takes like 5 minutes(literally). It sits at the taskbar for the majority of the time trying to load up start up programs but there's nothing there to make it take so long! FOR SHAME BILL

didn't like vista much to start, but havent really had any issues, this is running 64bit as well, so i am abit of a convert. (i hate it on my laptop tho it runs like poo)
On my Desktop PC
With lots and lots of Gaming TF2,COD4,Pirates of the Burning Seas, watching movies, burning files etc etc etc.

It still has not slowed down, and uptime is 41days 12hrs and counting, yah vista.
while xp certainly would stay up similar, it would always bog away and require a restart eventually, i have yet to feel that need with vista.

Try checking the services loading at startup.

I had a similar sounding problem in XP, where the service that checks USB for digital cameras (Something like that anyway. I can't remember the name, sorry) would load and proceed to halt the computer until it timed out after 2 minutes or so.
