Topic: do alcohol spirits go off?
Spook
Posts: 20319

ok, grandma gave us a stack of little alcohol bottles, that are quite old (dunno how old exactly)

are they worth anything?

are they drinkable?

apparently at a party a while a go, a spirit drinker tried one of the gins and said it tasted funny

im either going to drink them, or sell them on ebay;

If it's a pure spirit which i assume it is (i just mean not like premixed), im pretty sure they don't change with age.

To my knowledge if it is still sealed, get to drinkin'

Or - sell it on ebay and buy fresh product with the profits

Dude if it's sealed you have hit the jackpot. Even if it's open, depending on the lid it might still be ok. Smell... taste test. You should know pretty quickly if it's bad.

but then once could say that the flavours get a little stronger.

Wrong. Once bottled strong spirits neither improve or degrade (provided they're not getting subjected to constant sunlight or weird temperature changes).

Maturation occurs while the spirits are casked, alcohol content drops during this time due to evaporation (the Angel's Share).

Not sure about the legalities, but was under the impression you would need a liquor license to sell alcohol online...

Taken from Ebays alcohol policy

* Sellers that wish to list alcohol or wine on eBay Australia must have a licence to sell these types of items.
* Sellers must place the number of their license, to sell alcohol or wine, in the item listing.
* Alcohol and wine may only be traded domestically, within Australia.

Various States have different laws and guidelines regarding the legality of trading wine and alcohol. Make sure you know your State's laws and if (and where) you are allowed to post alcohol and wine. You should research the liquor laws for all of Australia's States that may be involved in your transaction.

* When alcohol is posted to a buyer, you must obtain the signature of an adult (person over 18 years of age).

Just like people that collect antique firearms don't need a gun license, amirite?

/sarcasm

You MIGHT get caught out Spook, should have just privately sold them here.

edit: I bid $20 here

u should have a collectable spirit bottle party and sit around drinken em 1 for 1 on the balcony, whilst trying to throw the empties into a wheelie bin positioned in the front yard. gold.

it's at $31 now, if you put in half an hour of effort taking a few better photos and listing all of them, imo it'll get to $75+

Well how many bottles are there? Normally the 50ml bottles sell from $3 (absolutely povo) - $6 (premium spirits).

Looks like there's literally $300+ worth of spirits there.

from http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/policies/alcohol.html:

Collectable containers

Certain States within Australia prohibit the sale of collectable containers that contain alcohol regardless of the value of the item. Accordingly no collectable containing any alcohol can be listed for sale on eBay.com.au.

ok, that doesnt sound good;

i noticed a few other people selling similar products, im sure ebay will get around to pulling my sale if they dont like it, they have pulled other sales of mine, so i know they watch (protip, dont bag out paypal in your listings)

anything in particular you want me to list?

theres a stack of bottles, i dont want to list them all;

i had a bit of a look at the labels last nite taking them out, and theres certainly some quite old little bottles, some of the labels were quite hard to read, i woudlnt have a clue how old they are;

nice work spook, profit++

If this sells it's going to be in the hundreds.
I had heaps of old spirits and liquors like these when my family closed a pub which is going back about 15 years now...... but ended up being the life of the party and shared them with friends.

g'luck with the sale, I hope I win the auction :)
