I know theres a few QGL travellers and have had help even recently in my trip in december. I guess the thread is to see what are good places to spend new years and if Amsterdam is a good destination. The plan I have so far is to catch up with a few mates in Germany after christmas and make our way to Amsterdam for New Years. Is it a good place to go for new years? Do hotels/hostels tend to be booked out and need early reservations?

Use www.hostelworld.com (maybe .net) and just punch in whatever city, put new years, and check general availability (because I doubt anyone here has experience with booking hostels close to new years with less than a month anticipation). I found for example in Madrid that the hostel was empty during the week, but full for the weekend (though may have been the Spain/Sweden soccer game causing this, (went to real madrid's stadium for this, epenis++)).

As for good places, I guess you're looking for a big square to stand in new york style? Be a little more specific for what you're after as really any big city would do, and I doubt it'll be one of the major experiences nor the major thing you talk/brag about when you get home.

Cheers thanks for the sites, availability looks good so far but some places booked out already :S

The plan is to bum around europe till february/march and then work in London hopefully for the next few years. Thought about edinburgh as well but maybe I'd do that for the next new years as theres going to be plenty of opportunity for that, besides the place i will be in deutchland is pretty close to holland so might as well give amsterdam a go.

get in contact with st christophers in the redlight, they're are chain of better quality back packers hostels with the option of your own room.

That's where i stayed when i headed across from the burgh and you'll find it's filled with tourists in the main bar (Beulishi's), in the heart of the red light and absolutely abuzz 24/7.

Maybe in the Dam as well (local house party, & crash at friends place - so no help there), but if not there then having a quiet one in France, tucked away in a chateaux with a big arse fire place crank'in, drinking copious amounts of wine!

somewhere in Dublin running amok...

I was invited to a private party/function in London but can't get the 31st off work and couldn't be f***ed traveling to London after a day at work so I'll just head out somewhere here in Dublin, it'll be crazy :D

I find New Year's to be the most over rated night of the year... but maybe because we never celebrate it properly???

This year we're thinking of going down to Melbourne for the night. We have a free place to crash but it'd be Brizzy boys not know where the f*** to go.

Anything fun/novel to do in Brizvegas?

Agreed with the shirtless guitar guru, NY is a bit over-rated. We'll probably just go find a restraunt to have a nice dinner at and then head home afters.

Your NYE fails unless it involves drink driving on the buggies and getting chased by buggy police.

yes that s*** is customary. i dont know where the hell the benny hill theme music comes from but it makes those buggies go heaps faster.

Anybody just headed into the city/valley this year?
I find myself lacking the funds this year to do anything overly exotic so will probably stay pretty local.
Got a friend or two headed up here from down south over christmass/NYE so will probably be out and about somewhere around here and looking for trouble to make.

imo clubbing sux on new years eve, every where is packed and overpriced plus they charge higher than normal cover charge. find yourself a good house party

That's the common belief, but I've found NYE to be like a standard Fri/Sat night - I think the above attitude makes people stay away, and therefore the city/valley is quieter than you'd think.

Drink prices have always been the same at the bars I've frequented on NYE.

So very true, new years 2003 was dead in the valley, there was so few people there it wasn't even worth being in there.

My friend has to work NYE, so i will probably spend it keeping her company, then we might fly off to Copenhagen for a few days for "late partying"
Spending christmas at her folks place as well if i don't have to go to Cairo for work.

same as usual, getting drunk at rancho relaxo, tequilla, loud music, swimming, fireworks...

clubbing on NYE is the worst experience ever.

Hopefully it won't rain this year... I spent a fair whack of money last year getting an apartment on the main street, all for nothing.

Spending my new years in Copenhagen :D
