Costello says no thanks to opposition leader role:

Oooo!

So who is gonna be the man?

Downer again?
Turnball?!

Turnbull or Abbot, but neither did their claims much good in the campaign.

I'm with Spidz. Only downside to Turnbull is he is a Republican.

Possibly Ruddock.

Yeh that's true pave, but Costello doesn't get to say who is the right candidate; sounds like there is a lot of fallout going on atm. They may well go with a patsy (haha poor Downer ... again?) while they work out a real next-gen leader?

One thing for sure it does sound like the party is moving to disassociate itself from the prior Government. That could work for them, but it might give Labor an extra term's grace while they rebuild a viable alternative?

i doubt turnbull would take it.

he would prefer a chance at being pm, rather than opposition leader. i predict 2 terms of labor atleast. unless rudd does something really stupid in his first term.

If there is minimal blood letting, I think the Coalition will win the next election.

I said the same thing spidz, about Labor...in 1996... and Bomber won the national popular vote... but not enough seats.
Two terms minimum.

Historically we don't change governments unless they really shag up - Whitlam is the prime example of this (Khemlani loans affair anyone?) - or their time is up. Then we give the newbies time to make some mistakes. I'd be surprised if the Rudd Labor Government doesn't last at least three terms, for all Garrett's talk about changing everything there will be a softly, softly approach from Labor.

Costello definitely doesn't want to do the hard yards as Opposition Leader for 2-3 terms to get his shot as PM - he wanted the nice transition that JWH denied him. After the second loss as leader the Liberals would turn on him and hand leadership to someone like Abbott or Turnbull. Most losing Liberal leaders are lucky to get one shot at an election.

So Downer will throw his hat in the ring, generational change be damned. Abbott and Turnbull will have a go as well. The smart thing would be to set up Downer as next time's loser so they can put one of the other two in for the real shot in 2013.

i think it will be just like the former republic of Yugoslavia, once the prominent leader is removed, the new elect doesn't have the political strength to hold the embattled group together, Yugoslavia collapsed after Tito's death, and i think the liberals will descend into frenzy of in-fighting and backstabbing, reminiscent of the labor infighting before Rudd became leader, or it could even go the way of the ALP / DLP split of the 1950's under bob Bob Santamaria, with the religious right in the liberals been lead by say Abbot and the politically conservative under say Turnbull. needless to say, very sobering times ahead for the libs.

f*** me what a disaster for the Libs. I bet Costello would love to stab Johnny through the heart with a pencil.

Costello is a bit of a soft cock though compared to the 'Man of Steel'. Johnny personified the term 'persistence'.

I always knew international politics was doomed when Tito's career died.

Turnbull is keen, Downer unsure

Whoever takes it on is in for a rough ride. You could almost think that they'd prefer to miss out and be waiting in the wings for the next round once the shadow of the Howard Government has faded.

Edit: ohs*** its Turnbull?

qmass: Downer has previously dismissed thoughts of leadership while Costello was the de facto choice.

He's now apparently the most senior Lib left and is considering it.

he seems personable enough, even though hes forced to trot out all the coaltion nonsense

people would actually vote for him (unlike costello)

I quite like Joe Hockey, he gives an impression of being 'nice' and competent at the same time.

I think he would suffer from the fat man problem with Aussie politics tho. All bulls*** aside he would need to lose a few to have a real shot.

Kind of sad but true :(

Obes - they're not 'my libs' - I vote on policy. Having blind faith in a political party is retarded, and both sides of politics have plenty of these retards.

+1 for Joe Hockey. I think he would be the only guy who would keep Rudd on his toes. I've always wanted Rudd as PM, but I want him to be tested as well.

LOL @ RDO. Unlikely they'll waste an RDO tho, they'll chuck a sickie because they've been boozing with the union bosses, spending workers union fees on strippers.

Jim, One of them was that crazy wench off Sunrise, on polling day. She was on Sunday Sunrise as well, where she sort of stepped back from the extreme attitude.

I even believe someone on this forum threatened to lose there Australian citizenship if it happened. I bet they won't and if they do ... Chopper says Harden the f*** up

And spidz, I didn't vote for Latham ... and I am not pro Labor so much as anti Johnny. (Not that how I vote affects anything, Lilley has been a forgone conclusion for years, I actually give my vote to random minor parties so they might get their deposit back)

I believe both side can run a government, if only because its really the public service that runs it!
