ok, i used to be one of those guys that was all like "painting? lulz, sif"
however, im slowly becoming everything i used to hate (but liking it) new kitchen and what not is going in (petals super nesting), so we've decided to paint while all the s*** is out of the house, and we dont care about the floor gimme some tips we've just started with cheap brush packs, rollers and cutting in tools just doing double coat (maybe more if needed) dulux wash and wear atm, seems to be looking ok, so far, first coat is on, second is started tonite; oh and ive learnt not to use too much paint on teh cutting in gearies, else you get a nice thick line underneath them rollers seem to go ok, but the brushes are streaky, how do we stop that? do better quality brushes, give better finishes? should i rock back to bunnings and buy all expensive gear? |

Bettwe brushes and more paint give less streaks.
We painted our house and I don't envy your position right now Just work from top to bottom and make sure the ceilings are white |

where are you using a brush?
always brush first (with the masking tape where needed) then roll second, it looks way better than if you roll first, then brush the edges second. don't you have the "How to" channel??!?! |

and the funniest thing is seeing people's attempts at painting their own houses, and they trying to tell you it looks alright lol yer, thats what im worried about im half assed at the best of times, but a few guys at work do all their own work, reckon it looks good and saves them $$$$$$$ paveway, come round and give me some tips Just work from top to bottom and make sure the ceilings are white roger that maam, have started on ceiling, ceiling colour is fair bianca (white) using rollers for majority, only brushing cornices, which are curved and too thin for rolling, even the useless small roller i bought last edited by Spook at 21:50:35 19/Nov/07 |

Get decent brushes and rollers, makes things much easier. You can also get 'mini' rollers, these are surprisingly good for the tighter spots and can be used for cutting in.
Spend the most time preping the surface. Sanding back, gap filling etc. There's no point in painting over a crap surface. If it's an old house beware of lead based paint - very toxic for kids (and no-doubt unborn kids). Make sure you wait the suggested re-coat time, even if it feels touch dry. Recoating before that time will end up with a s***y finish. I have basically painted the interior of our house. I finally started to get reasonably good at it - right when I finish the job. But next time it will be much easier as I know have a bit of experience. Just make sure you do the preparation properly and don't expect a great result if your doing it for the first time. last edited by mission at 21:49:08 19/Nov/07 |

make sure you paint the whole cornice white, and cut the wall colout up to that underside of the cornice
so basically keeping the wall colour just on the wall, and the whole cornice white lol good luck with cutting in |

yeah minimum of 1 x undercoats (white or depending on the colour of your top colour choice) and then 2 coats of top colour.
As mission mentioned, preparation is *everything*. Once you got your walls properly prepared i.e. sand back, filled in the holes (then sand back), sugar soap, masked. The painting itself is relatively easy if you use good quality brushes (as spidz said, do all the conner and edges first with brushes/mini roller, then fill in the rest with rollers). The trick is to apply the colour evenly and don't be tempted to keep going over the same area over and over especially the first coat. It's easy to get discouraged when applied the first coat as it will never look even because a) part of the paint dried at different rates and b) it's part of the wall absorbed colour at different rate. So, apply first coat, then wait until *all* part of the wall is dry, you'll know it because the colour will even out. Then you can apply the 2nd coat. In summer I reckon it'll probably only take about 2-3 hours for the first coat to dry. Once you've applied the 2nd coat and it's *dried* completely, then you check the bits that you've missed and fix it with either brush or roller. Then peel off the masking tapes (Bunning sells painters tape which makes thing a whole lot easier). I usually gentally cut it using sharp stanley knife first just in case the paint clogged up the tapes (easy to do esp when you're not pro heh, particularly around the top of the skirting board as paint polls there if you've put to much on). Make sure that you peel the tape of carefully otherwise you might f***ed your hard work up. Then you're done. :) We've done quite at lot of internal wall painting ourselves and it looked quite good, not perfect of course but not s***ty either. I don't recommend you painting external walls yourself though, that's really for the pro or people that really know what they're doing....... Have fun, it's really worth it once you see the result. Especially if you done it right :). Totally changed the whole atmosphere of the house etc. |

Get a professional, when a painter's PC f***s up he will not try to give it a go himself, he'll take it to Gamedouche or Harvey Norman - so why try and do his job!

trades are for people who like to abuse their body and put themselves into dangerous situations for average pay. |
