For the old school military simulator fans comes some new screenshots for the upcoming new Harpoon title:
Larry Bond’s Harpoon – Commander’s Edition is the latest addition to the longstanding naval warfare simulation series that has brought awards and accolades from naval strategy fans and military personnel alike. Like its predecessors, Harpoon – Commander’s Edition allows players to assume the role of a fleet commander, making the same type of decisions he has to make, using the same type and quality of information he might expect to get in wartime.

So this is kinda like Silent Hunter?
I don't thinkkkkk so - Silent Hunter is just a sub sim, yeh?

Harpoon is this awesome old game that puts you in charge of like an entire carrier group (and I think some ground-based things like air force bases and stuff). I can't remember if it is turn based or real time (I think the latter?) but I can remember spending like 4 hours at a time sitting there fighting back the REDS. It was terribly addictive.

I remember playing this when it first came out in 1992 / 1993. Very addictive. Great game.

I have been waiting for an update to this game.

I really couldn't justify putting my time into a game that looks that lame. There's Flash games that look cooler than that.

Maybe, but they don't have anywhere near the depth of gameplay. Obviously this is game that isn't about how it looks. If its anything like the original it'll be pretty awesome to play - at least if you're into realistic milsim type games.

I was on a big Tom Clancy bender when I was playing the original Harpoon, and it like playing a Red Storm Rising game. I remember having my airbase in Keflavik and launching air strikes on Russian carrier groups!

Trog, I agree, this was a pure strategy game.

What about Defcon? I know it's not a Flash game, and I've played neither, just want to know how they compare in terms of depth.

I haven't played defcon but my understand is that it is just a nuking type game, right? Harpoon is basically all about real-world tactics and strategy and weapons/vehicles/ships/planes.

My dream is to start a games company and develop a game where the entire focus is international diplomacy. No fighting, no shooting, no military tactics.

Just talk and plenty of it. Each player would assume the role of a diplomat or dignitary and then you would organise envoys, summits and the like. You could have embargos, refugee negotiations, UN peace talks, diplomatic visits, conferences; the list really is endless.

And the best part is, it would never end. As soon as something looked like getting resolved that gave your opponents any sort of perceived advantage, you could pull out a trade agreement violation or create a non-violent international incident.

I would call it World Politics: The Battle to Continue Fighting.
