Electronic waste collection days Apple is sponsoring this and they'll be recycling everything in an evironmentally friendly way (you might remember my old thread on how to dispose of old CRTs - this is a great way to get rid of them). Unfortunately I only just got back in the country after a month off otherwise I'd try to organise a QGL mass effort to go pick up old CRTs from lazy bastards, but if you have the time to do it this weekend its a good safe way of getting rid of old stuff. |

So it says COLLECTION, but then lists all the drop off locations.
Is is a collection or what? I need to get rid of a whole bunch of crap here at work - can I just leave in on the curb on Albert street? The Brewhouse smoker patrons can use it as an elaborate ashtray over the weekend. |

Should just list everything you want to get rid of here, I'm sure someone would want it if it's FREE.
Ps. Welcome back trog! |

That's awesome.. we use a company called Clearhouse to do our e-waste "management". They come, collect, resell, dump, etc all for a low cost. Bonus is if that the gear is worth something they will buy it off you and resell it in their own stores.

Yeh if anyone has anyhting working that they're thinking of chucking - post it here first;) You might actually get it COLLECTED rather than having to drop it off:p
Awesome initiative though. Props to Apple. |

Your old computer and other electronic waste cannot be disposed of in your wheelie bin.I reckon, I've put dozens of computers/monitors/tv's in the green bin over the years. |

yer... is it really illegal to throw tv's n monitors in the regular waste? coz i recently threw 2 x 21" crts in the dump... & one of the guys working there came over & watched me throw them in the pit. we agreed that they smashed to bits in a way that was somewhat gratifying.

This may just be an elaborate front masterminded by Gamedude to obtain a mass quantity of crapola they can fill their specials page with.

As reso said, I'd bet someone (maybe me) would want your old s***...Do you want old s***ty 17" CRTs? yer... is it really illegal to throw tv's n monitors in the regular waste?I don't _think_ its illegal, but they have lots of lead in the screens (plus other materials), so its better to dispose of them safely if you can (like everything really) |

That is such a lie. You can landfill almost anything, it is by far safer than melting and shredding things up. IMO what is actually happening in this 'recycling' is that these people are salvaging anything sellable, then dumping the rest. Same as what happens with mobile phones. Who would pay someone to separate all the plastic and metal from your computer? Bull f***en s***... |

Yeah i saw a doco recently about 1st world countries sending all their e-waste to 3rd world countries like Nigeria etc.
To sum it up there were lots of scenes of dire poverty and poor black c***s sifting through mountains of mud and toxic e-waste. |

Who said you can't put CRT's in the rubbish bin? That's how we usually dispose of them. Put rubbish over top and nobody knows the difference

Who would pay someone to separate all the plastic and metal from your computer? Bull f***en s***... that isn't true. there are quite a few places that strip mobos and pcb boards out of hardware and ship them off to be processed to extract the gold and recycle the silicon from the pcb. at HP they stripped the kit here and then sent it to a plant in singapore to extract the goodness. last edited by ara at 23:07:02 25/Oct/07 |

I threw a CRT on the road years ago, when I was back in high school. The damn thing didn't even crack, even after two attempts. Maybe they just don't make 'em like they used to.

Thanks Trog.
Its going to hurt to do it, but I have to get rid of my old Thompson TV. Its a 66cm widescreen TV with a great picture. Only problem is that it has an intermittent problem where it puts itself into standby and wont turn back on. Also, its very very hard to get parts for Thompson TV's in Australia now as the importer went broke a couple of years ago and noone else has taken it over. It seems like such a waste to dump it but I cant store it forever. If anyone has TV tech skills, you may be able to fix it. I think its probably just an IC or something on the mainboard. |
