Don't quote me on this, but apparently the portal pre-load is 500ish megs.

500meg is chicken feed anyway. As long as the game is fun it's all worth it.

I guess the preolad depends on what else you have installed on your system "game engine" wise...

Still got 5/6 days till it goes live so you've got plenty of time to suck it down the pipe.

The files you download are also heavily compressed so the download is quite a bit smaller than the resulting game, thankfully. Im happy this is coming out now and not on the 10th of November (ie in the middle of exam block) :P

I heard it was 1.1gig
Ive read that its about 600MB (close enough to 500) and unpacks to about the 1-2gig mark. Gotta remember that it depends heavily on what you have installed as well as what the download size extracts to.

Think with:
HL2
Ep1
TF2

installed mine started at about the 80% mark for portals. Sucked it down off GA content and had it in a couple of minutes.

Ep2 commenced at about 55% with the above + portals preloaded.

(to give some idea)

Are you talking about Portal or Episode 2? Or both? I'd imagine it'd be more than 600MB for both of them, even if you already have all of the other Source games, including TF2.\

EDIT: Yeah, mine started at about the same percentages, but we're capped until midnight tonight, so I'll bet it wont be done by the time I get home this arvo :(

So. Portal. X2-3800+, 2GB RAM and a 6800GT. Would this be enough to be playable?

Alternatively, 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB, 256MB Radeon X1600 - enough?

I preloaded portal a little while ago and ep2 last night. From memory the payload was something like this.

Portal: 700MB
EP2: 2.5GB

The ep2 figure was a little surprising, cause I don't think ep1 was anywhere near that much.

edit: these figures are based off logging 'bytes received' using task manager overnight. So they are kinda rough but close enough to the mark I feel.

another edit: oh yeah, and prior to pre-loading portal and ep2 I had the following at 100%:

HL2
HL2 : Lost Coast
HL2 : Episode 1
TF2

Just think I might point out to everyone that it's Portal, not Portals. It's nit-picky to say, but it's irritating.

I want to buy this on steam for cheap.. But I'm on dial-up.. So I'll probably be forced to pay $90+ in the shops for it. Lame :(

i was loving tf2 at first but im getting kinda bored of it already. i wonder how the spamminess / noob friendly aspects of the game will affect its long term appeal

i hadn't played episode 1 till i got the orange box...it was pretty s***. ep2 looks better, and portals will be sweet

Yeah the whole public server aspect of it gets quite boring. But when you're playing with people who know how to play it is great fun still. Bit like DOD or any other game. Public server play typically lacks compared to playing in closed/clan games.

that's pretty universal for all games Twisted

hence et:qw > tf2 :P

buy it and then goto a mates and get them to backup their cache for it.

or if they don't own it, log in with your steam account, download it at their place and then back it up.

I'd say the only thing that could actually make ET:QW any worse would be if Uwe Boll made a movie of it.

Hence TF2 4 lyfe.

Stuck on 19... I have nfi how to get the block you need near the end.

I have made portals and flown across the room so very very close to getting onto the platform but I just can't seem to move sideways in the air onto it. Probably another way to do it but I haven't figured that out yet :(

I think portal will be all about user created challenges. The source engine is pretty easy to mod after all.

Took me 2-3 hours to finish, really fun and pretty funny game. Was expecting a bit more though. Looks to be a few bonus challenges and looks like users can create challenges as well which should be interesting.

I wouldn't pay 50 bucks for portal alone (even though I have paid 100 bucks for far worse) but the orange box is easily a worthy purchase.

I gave up to play some ep2 and so far I have been quite impressed. Looks good, runs great and driving around in half a Dodge Charger is totally f***ing win!

Some of the scripted scenes have been really good too.

Orangebox has brought me so much joy!

Finished portal last night.....around 3hrs. Absolutely love that game, bit of a head f*** in a few spots but very cool. Anyone managed to get all the achievements yet? I got just over half, will have to go back and do the rest again. Haven't tried the bonus maps yet. Gotta love the trash talking computer.

Has anyone managed to complete all 6 advanced challenges? I am up to the 6th now but am stuck just after the start... making it across the first gap is easy but now that the roof is metal how in the poo do you get up the wall gap?

The 5th was a faget having to bounce those electron balls off the sphere... so annyoing!

They have a lot of little easter eggs in portal where you can go outside the challenges and they give you some back info about the plot and etc.

I can't wait to see if any nerds think up some super custom challenges, thats where the real fun will be imo.

I dont think the 'back-rooms' in portal are meant to be easter eggs, persay. They are much more a part of the portal storyline than an easter egg would be.

Seems like you guys didnt notice but as well as the computer, there is a dharma logo on the wall for a 'forest' station. (haw haw...)
