It's not often that Australian consumers receive an a-list movie before our North American counterparts but for whatever reason, that's what's happened with Activision's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Now available nation-wide for PC multiplayer goodness and locally hosted servers are up and running to boot.

Some of us here at AusGamers were fortunate enough to participate in the game's private beta testing and it has been a great experience watching the game transform as it was polished up for release. Click here to find out our thoughts on the final retail game in our in-depth review of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars - spoiler: it's a worthy addition to the Quake franchise.

I played the open beta for about 10 mins then uninstalled, not a fan of battlefield styled games at all.

I also thought the graphics were pretty average compared to some of the recently released games.

I agree. It felt very much like BF2142. If I hadn't known otherwise, I would have thought it was some kind of BF2142 mod.

I have to agree again. It just brings nothing new to the market. I think it will attract too many retard gamers as well. Game play brings very little. Hopefully is isn't a complete flop (a friend from uni just spend the last 12 months working 60-80 weeks working on this), but I reckon this will pretty much just flop and fizz out.

Halo 3, TF2 and Assassins Creed (just around the corner)...they should have released this earlier. Just knowing that better games are out or coming out soon means I don't want to waste my money.

no way its a flop. I dig it. lots of varied gameplay styles. two completely different races.

I wouldnt know how to compare it to a s***ty EA BF game cos I havent bought once since BF1942. Halo 3? lol

I really don't think it's fair to either call it a battlefield styled game or to judge it after 10 minutes play.

Splash Damage was forged from the mod team that designed Q3 Fortress, Wolf: ET was a progression of that and Quake Wars a progression again, the only thing 'Battlefield styled' about it is the inclusion of vehicles.

As I said in the review, the learning curve is pretty steep so gameplay isn't very instantly gratifying. Every new map in the game takes a bit of getting used to, but once you start to learn the intricacies, it becomes a lot more enjoyable.

Also, TF2 obviously, Halo 3 not so much, but Assassin's Creed's release has about as much bearing on this game's community as the next version of Sudoku.

I like TF2...

I like et:qw...

I can't see TF2 becoming more popular than CS though. it's a great game but it can't pull the noobs. these two games share the same style of gameplay.

hopefully more people will move up from BF to et:qw. time will tell.

Like for goodness sake there is NO joystick support

Thank f*** for that. I'm glad they chose to spend time on more important issues.

Im loving this game heaps i have only played for 2 hours and enjoyed every aspect of the game i have it maxed out on settings and it runs smooth as i can see me playing this game for a long time ( im a quake fan big time) but it all comes down to personal choice in the end i guess . (opinions are like a****** everyone has one and thats mine)

No way. The whole thing feels very much like BF2142. The vehicles don't really seem to come too close to BF2142, but I didn't spend much time in vehicles on the ETQW demo. Just because it has vehicles doesn't make it like BF.

Joystick support for flying the planes isn't an important issue? Really I would have thought it'd be a no brainer and be right at the top of things to implement if you're putting planes into your game. Not that I care one way or the other cos I don't play the game, but it does seem like a bit of an odd thing to leave out.

Personally I don't see the point of a joystick unless you are running a high-precision flight simulator that comes with the keyboard overlay guides and such, like Apache Longbow or Falcon, etc, from back in the day. Those games need a joystick or else you fly sideways and crash into a mountain like a noob :)

With unrealistic fast-paced games like ET:QW where speed (and not precision) generally matters more, I don't really see the fuss with joysticks.

Don't whine on QGL forums about no-joystick, bitch about over at ET:QW. If they are good developers and many other people have a similar issue, they will add it.

But there _is_ joystick support, that guy was just whinging because he thinks it's too hard to set up. It's really not.

I got an xbox 360 control pad working on ETQW and setting it up was an absolute no-brainer. I still much prefer mouse control for the vehicles though.

No way. The whole thing feels very much like BF2142.
Maybe you missed the part of my post where I pointed out that it's a progression of other games in its own lineage. Calling it 'battlefield style' is as insulting as calling Doom 2 a 'counter-strike' style game.

This game is not very polished compared to 2142

Hahaha, have you played the s***ty bugfests that are any of the Battlefield games?

I just personally can't stand large open environments filled with a plethora of vehicles. It always seems very "messy" to me. The short time I did spend playing it there was s*** everywhere, all over the ground and even little peons in jetpacks whizzing around in the air.

Plus on pub servers it just becomes a s***fight for the vehicles when they do spawn. Additionally theres usually no real teamwork and it just turns to poo.

I played BF2142 demo for about the same amount of time and when I first joined thats the first thing I immediately though of. Wow this appears to be a BF clone.

Not a big quake fan either which is probably got something to do with why I found it very average. That is just my opinion though so for all of those that do like it, great go play it and I'll just stick to TF2 :)

It reminds me alot of bf in the way that most of the battles are fought very far apart. Getting killed from half a map away. And most of the classes are distinct enough to warant them.

And it's spiffy how the missions appear to tie into the overall quake story (yes, there IS a story).

It's ALOT more polished than any of the bf games i've seen.

It was good, i was probably going to buy it and invest a fair chunk of time into it, untill i played the tf2 beta.

nice review dan.

i will probably buy this game eventually, but right now i only have enough time for TF2. i agree if etqw was released a bit earlier it would have done heaps better.

wtf you people are whinging about the vehicles in etqw? half of them are just transport vehicles which get hucked away once you arrive at the main firefight.

and no way its like battlefield, theres actually objectives which focuses the main battleline. not some s***ty hold as many points as possible to descrease the opposing teams tickets.

You know what quake wars needs? An engineer class that can make teleporters.

nah - just players who aren't afraid to learn to effectly drive vehicles offroad.

run around from the back and pwn em from behind. if you're not organsied enough to realise the s*** comes from all directions in current fps games now then you've been hiding under a rock for half a decade

Does that mean we might get a new series of QGL comics made using ET:QW?

Unless you're not the same Moridin then I spose that'll just mean nothing to you.

the rest is fubar.. can get yaw on heli to bind to twist axis

throttle will not bind tho..

how odd.. works perfectly here.

the only problem I have is deploying decoys as soon as I hear lock on.. here down on the end of the fishbone as soon as I've heard it the server has prolly told you of a direct hit :/

yep - this game has the same netcode as BF2. I never would have thought I'd live to see a Carmack engine bastardised this way. I guess 'the market' has spoken =(

thanks PunkBuster

All in all, if this was released for $50...

it's $50 on Steam.

sure it's cheaper from SE Asian online stores, but they don't auto-update and provide any kind of support if my purchase goes to s***e. It's all 'as is' out of the box.. much like buying a 2nd hand car is.

I've often wondered.. do people in gaming retail stores have to deal with customers who buy from them who later have to customer-satisfaction issues due to crappy/lack of ongoing support from the game's creators?

how does this work exactly, if at all? Or does the buck just get passed along the line?
