I'm going on my honeymoon in Japan. I leave on the 28th of August. Last I checked, the AUD was worth 104 Yen. Now it's f***ing 86 all of a sudden. What the hell? Any finance wizards wanna tell me what the odds are of this having some semblance of a bounce-back in the next week or so? This stings a little =\ |

most reports seem to be people thinking of 2-3months...something about australia being a 'smaller' economy and more susceptible to the whole market crash thing.
for your sake i hope it does recover that quickly.. |

as in all os travel don't cash in till you're there.
there's always unofficial exchangers who give you best rates.....only cash what you need before you leave to cover immediate costs...IE. taxi, airport taxes, customs if required... then ask taxi drivers (they are the ones in all asian countries i've been to) for exchange place.....best rates!!! so take a qty of $AU for exchange purposes and rest in traveller chqs for official exchange.....just be careful and dont keep in back pocket or inside jacket pocket....get a money belt....might seem wanky but harder to pickpocket!! enjoy your honeymoon!! |

mad props bloke. Phwoar thanks DC! :) Bucks tomorrow night @ 6pm - Newmarket Hotel if you wanna come along :) And yeah, don't mind this thread. Just venting. Also, while we're on the subject of overseas cash: Am I right to assume that any ATM with a Cirrus logo will allow me to withdraw cash from my CBA bank account? We're not taking travellers cheques, nor are we gonna cruise around with $2k worth of Yen in our pocket. Would that be the best way to go about getting cash while over there? We've never travelled without parental guidance outside of Australia :) |

"A tourist visiting Japan must be aware of the fact that the most ATM's in Japan do not accept foreign credit cards. Only international ATMs located at post offices and in a few major departmental stores and airports accept foreign debit and credit cards. Telephone and other utility bills can be paid at banks, ATMs, post offices and at some convenience stores.
As far as ATMs are concerned, most of these machines do not accept debit and credit cards that are issued outside Japan. The only exceptions are the ATMs which are located at the 20000 post offices all over the country. These ATMs allow you to withdraw cash by foreign Visa, Plus, Mastercard, Maestro, Cirrus, American Express, Diners and JCB cards and provide an English user menu." |

A tourist visiting Japan must be aware of the fact that the most ATM's in Japan do not accept foreign credit cards.this is true. I only found a few ATMs outside of post offices that accepted my regular (cirrus) ATM card. Fortunately post offices weren't hard to find though. |

Ain't technology grand!@#! Of course, each time you do a withdrawal you pay a conversion fee. |
