I was wondering this the other day when I read something (I think on the Google power thing) about how something huge like 70% of monitors are now LCDs - where the hell have all the old CRTs gone?

Now I have an old CRT I want to dispose of - what the most enviro-friendly way to do this?

(or, if anyone wants a free 17" condition unknown, its a give-away)

They Took my old CRT's on the Kerb Side pick-ups.

Dont know about Bris but the Logan Dumps have special sections for CRT so they'd do something with them I spose.

Put it in the bin, it will get landfilled. There is no danger to the environment in landfilling. It is safe for nature and a fair price for the economy.

I think I heard on JJJ there are these guys who collect old PC parts and build computers for disadvantaged families.... worth looking into.

They don't do kerb side pickup here, and when you take monitors or computers to the dump they charge you $10 a pop.

he is right on the money according to this SMH Article.

About 98 per cent of discarded televisions, computers and mobile phones, end up as "e-waste", dumped in landfills. Many of the items contain dangerous materials including mercury and cadmium.

Found a few things with Google, including this mob in Brisbane - looks like there are a few sites, but most of them seem to have a "no more monitors" policy - I'm guessing they got inundated with old CRTs.

Surely there's something someone can do with old CRTs in terms of recycling them to make money!

An artist could glue them altogether and call it, "Technology" and sell it for millions.

Bury them in children's playgrounds.

I'll call these guys tomorrow and find out what they charge.

Does anyone else have old CRTs they want to get rid of? If there is interest I'll find out about organising a bulk dealie.

More googling:

recyclingnearyou.com.au is an excellent resource, and put me onto more sites, like Brisbane city council which apparently collects stuff, which they hand over to Sims group.

You can recycle old Dell Stuff, though apparently they suck because they use prison labour.

If it's a really large CRT I'll take it.

I'm too poor to buy an LCD, using a 17 inch CRT atm.

CRTs in terms of recycling them to make money!

Apart from the aluminum industry there is no way to recycle something and make money off it. The process of recycling is very pollutive and costly.

Whats wrong with using prison labour ?

Better that than them re-enacting Michael Jackson music video clips.

I've got a 76cm Thompson CRT TV that works great, but only sometimes, sitting on the floor here. I have to get rid of it to make room. If anyone is a tech and thinks they can fix it, your welcome to it. Such a shame because the picture on the thing is great when it working.

i took my old crt's to buyequip at stafford.

they didn't give me anything for them, but they were either recycled or resold, which was fine because it got them out of my hair.

ive got about 5 crts i need to get rid of. theyre a f***ing pain in the ass, especially with all the guilt involved in dumping them, as well as not being able to find the dump vouchers the council gave me.

i was tempted to put them on the front lawn with a 'do not steal' sign in hopes theyd be gone by the following afternoon

What do you think recycling a monitor involves?

They either seperate it into plastics, glass, circuitry, metals... or they shred the entire appliance - but then what do you think happens to that?

You still have all the s*** to dispose of.

Plus in some countries who have politicians that think like people in this thread, like America, the entire cost of recycling monitors is added as a tax to the price of new monitors. Why does recycling cost s***loads of money if it supposedly saves us effort in finding new materials? Because it's bulls***, that's why.

So why do they do recycling if it doesn't work? Simply because in the late 80s some people started believing in it, and the pollies jumped on board, and so did everyone else. Nowadays we have people like "Freewheelin" who feel guilty when they "do the right thing" and put their trash in the f***ing bin where it belongs... so we have these recycling programs to keep the hippies quiet, and keep people believing they've found a solution to their non-existant waste problem.

Actually, if you spend even a casual amount of time looking into it as I did, you find out that the biggest pollutant in CRT monitors (the lead screens) are re-used in new CRT devices

edit: Hold on to your old CRTs for a bit yall, I'll see what I can find out and see if I have the time to organise a mass recyclotron or something.

I do know Dell charge you to take monitors/computers away. Have you tried eBay - there'll usually be someone out there who wants a cheap monitor. One could argue that keeping it in use is better than it being shredded/recycled.

Late at night just dump them in your neighbors front yard.
