Got it in an email, if any of it is bulls***, I'm sorry:

For those worried with energy consumption and all its downsides ... When your
screen is white, being it an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer
consumes 74 watts, and when its black it consumes only 59 watts. Mark Ontkush
wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a
black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his
calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search
engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but
with a lower energy consumption, check it out.

I'd believe it!

My default Windows background colour is grey, not white. I guess that makes me an ECOWARRIOR.

that's some funny s***

imagine how much power you would save if everyone used the 'i'm feeling lucky' link, thereby going straight to the hopefully non-white result you are after.

I don't see how it could hurt to change over if it does indeed have all the same search functions so I am doing so.

Thanks for the heads up Idol :).

Doom3 was saving power

*edit* don't believe it has any effect on LCDs. Infact black would use a tiny tiny little bit more ? Activated LCDs block light right ?

Well you might not know, but I am pretty sure I do.

The back lighting in an active LCD is 1 or more Cold Cathode Fluoro Lamps (CCFL) (I use em as moon lightings in aquariums, some people use them for lighting in cars, very hard to find out technical information about their colour temperature or spectrum tho).

They are on whether 1 pixel has colour, 0 pixels have colour or all the pixels have colour.

wiki

miniature CCFLs are extensively used as backlights for computer liquid crystal displays

A DIY article on repairing a blown backlight ...

The light source in an active-matrix LCD monitor is a florescent bulb

it'd be good for oled displays though right. are they the ones with pixels that provide their own light
