Basically, ive re-installed windows, downloaded the latest version of this and it wont let me sign in no matter what i try. It keeps telling me to check my firewall settings, but I just have the basic firewall settings and this program is ticked to work. Ive got iprimus 1500 adsl through a d-link router. What can i do to get this to work?

The basic version (windows messenger) works fine, but its crap and old and id much prefer to use the MSN version.

run Ubuntu Live to check it out..

if you really needs Win apps you can always install, then run a virt machine.. 'as usual'

seriously dude, if you don't have a new Conroe you need to hook up with a mate who has one and check it out for yourself. If you don't be prepared for your next trainee make you look, well, like a n00b

did koopz get the wrong thread? or have a brain aneurysm?

Ethereal is a packet sniffer. It's not really a tool for newbies but if you know what you're looking for you can see the packets msn sends out and the reply the server sends back to diagnose where the problem might lie.

Yep, I had problems logging in recently because my date was like 3 weeks out. Could hardly believe it was that.

Burgz, Im not s***ting you here, but check your Time & Date. Make sure its accurate.

I had a friend of mine that couldn't log into msn (live, the lastest version). We noticed his date was set to the wrong month. Changed it back and bam worked straight away.

Its bulls*** i know but I saw it work :)

its weird, MSN is usually impossible to stop working, even if you're trying to firewall it, because it tries so many different ways to connect

disable all firewalls completely. make sure modem is not doing any port forwarding. Make sure you have no programs which could do any port blocking.

Failing that try another pc on your network to see if it is a pc problem.

As crazy as it is, delete your hosts (%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) file and try again.

Is there anything coming through the event log to indicate an error more specific than firewall settings?

There are a couple of registery settings you can delete that seem to correct most MSN messenger problems (had to do it to my Vista machine).

If you're running 8.0

Delete the following key in regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\Policies

If you're running 8.1

Delete the following key in regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Communications Clients\Shared4

Also try re-registering the DLLs manually that is also a popular fix for what ails Messenger.

The main one is

regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

Of course regedit at your own peril (isn't that the official microsoft disclaimer?).

Good Luck
